Memo Date: March 22, 2010 To: Andre Adams, Program Coordinator of the TerpZone * From: * Adedoyin Ogunbajo, Tournament Coordinator, the TerpZone Subject: Proposal to implement a sign-up fee for all video game tournaments. Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to request your approval to evaluate the current video game tournament sign-up process and ultimately institute an entrance fee for all tournaments starting next semester. Summary When the TerpZone started running the video game tournament series, I personally did not know what to expect, as I was in charge of coming up with a schedule of games, implementing the schedule into the TerpZone calendar, coming up with various ideas to market the various tounrmanents, and actually hosting and running the tournaments. But as the results have shown, the TerpZone video game tournament series has been a huge success, and the attendance numbers have steadily increased as more students become aware of the possibilities that our tournaments offer. However, as this number has continued to increase and I have continued to implement different new strategies and additions to the tournaments, there still lies the problem of what measure of compensation the students who participate in these tournaments should receive, either as a winner, runner-up, or finishing in a certain position after competing in the tourney. Since the inception of this idea, the system has been to award the winner and runner-up for each tournament prizes that involve a variety of coupons that can be redeemed at the TerpZone, depending on where the student finishes. These coupons are mostly valid for the services that we offer, such as 1 free hour of billiards, 1 free game of bowling + shoes, or arcade game tokens.

Memo to Manager

...MEMORANDUM TO: New Manager FROM: Promoted Manager DATE: May 14, 2012 RE: Group Formation and Communication Welcome New Manager! As you acclimate yourself to your new responsibilities in introducing new employees to their teammates, I felt it would be helpful to provide an outline of the basics on group development and how relationships form in groups. Included are barriers that can exist in group communications and techniques to overcome these barriers. To begin, there are five basic stages that group formation goes through. They are as follows: In the first stage, forming, members begin as individuals and phase to the next stage at the point when they begin to think of themselves as being part of a group. Forming will include members’ informally gathering information about other members and what type of behavior will make them fit in to the group. It is a time in which social ground rules are loosely laid and each member begins to figure out their social role within the group. Members in this stage are trying to determine what types of behaviors are acceptable. The second stage, storming, is when the social role of each member is further defined and a working order to the group begins to form. Members accept the existence of the group but resist the constraints it imposes on individuality. There is typically resistance from some members at this point as they convey their individuality as important and attempt to keep that intact as they meld into the...

...interoffice memorandum to: | Tom harrelson | from: | XXXX XXXX | subject: | Company POlicies and procedures | date: | August 18, 2015 | | | The purpose of this memo is to give a refresher on our company policies and procedures. It is paramount that when conducting our business, we are conducting it in a manner that reflects and abides to our policies and procedures. Due to a recent incident at the residence of our most valued customer Henry Stewart, I need to ensure that all of our employees know what our company policies and procedures are. The Incident: Today, August 18, 2015, at the house of Henry Stewart, two of our employees were assigned with spraying his home’s trees and shrubs for insects. During the spraying, Mr. Stewart’s prized koi fish were killed due to the fact that his koi pond was not covered prior to spraying. Additionally, Mr. Stewart reported that our employees that were assigned to the task were rude. This is not how our company conducts business. Company Policies and Procedures: 1. When assigning employees to work assignments, there will always be at least one experienced employee. This means if there are new employees they will ALWAYS have at least ONE experienced employee with them at all times. This is to ensure that all work is done correctly and with minimal errors. 2. ...Request For Permission To Pursue Research |Paychex, Inc | |Memo To: Frank Fiorille, Director CC: Michael Silsbee, Risk Management Supervisor: Doug Baxter, Credit and Banking Risk Manager From: Danielle Cole Date: 3/16/2010 Re: Request for research proposal Request for Approval I’d like your approval for me to continue with my research on the benefits of switching to a lockbox for our invoice payments. In this memo, you will find some of the highlighted benefits that I feel will help you make your decision for me to continue with this research. A lockbox is a P.O. Box that is set up with our bank that our customers will be able to send their payments too. The bank has a machine that will open, sort and process the checks. Once the day’s checks are processed, the bank will create a file and send it to us. The Information Technology will load the file into our Oracle system and once the nightly processes run, the file will post automatically into our billing system. In my initial research of the benefits of switching to a lockbox, I have found many advantages. Switching to a lockbox could mean a reduction in costs, less errors, it would be more time efficient, and we would have an easier look up process. Switching to a lockbox could save us money by possibly reducing our head count. We have the potential to reduce our head count by two people. We could also save money because we could cut out fuel reimbursement casts. If we had a lockbox, the people...

Evaluating Business Communication

...of your audience are and communicate with the visible purpose. Effective communication achieves its objective to persuade, respond or gain information by considering the style, format, purpose, organization and by tailoring the communication style to meet the audience requirements. Purpose Learning Team A was given five different accounting scenarios with limited amount of information on the JJJ Company, Riordan Mfg, Ad hoc Committee, CEO and the employees. Each team member was assigned a role from the accounting scenario and instructed to write and effective communiqué based on that roles. The communiqués could be n the form of a formal memo, email, power point, and text message. The types of communiqués were based on the information, i.e., formal, informal, long report, short report format, email, power point presentation, or memo, etc. Then each team member had to evaluate the business communication written by the other members and determine its effectiveness by using the following questions as a guide. 1) How well did the communication convey the intended message? 2) Would another type of communication have been more appropriate? Why? 3) Is the communication at the appropriate level for the intended audience? 4) How did the leadership styles in the scenario affect the communication within the group? 5) What changes would you recommend to improve the communiqué? 6) What are the ethical implications of the information being shared? 7) Does the communication share...

Communique Review Memo

...Communique Review Memo To: Herber Howard From: Nicolle Pack Subject: Communique Review Date: 03/03/14 The communications for Team B were to the Marketing manager, the Sales manager and the Accountant-Peer. These were all written as formal memos. After a review of these communications, I think that the information was presented in the correct communicational format. However, I do feel that some of the communiques could have included more information specific to the information they were to be presenting. The memo to the Marketing manager did not covey the intended message. I think that the information provided was too vague. The writer should have included more information related to the marketing aspect of the business and what would have to be done in order to successfully promote the business, if acquired, in these current market areas. For the purpose of this assignment I do not feel that another form of communication would have been better. If the Marketing manager was to base his decision, to acquire JJJ Company or not, solely upon the information in the memo, I think would be ethically incorrect. The information provided in this memo is not sufficient to derive any decisions as to the acquisition of JJJ Company. The memo to the Sales manager was written more clearly and effectively. The information presented was more related to the sales side of the business. However, I still feel that more sales specific information could have been presented. The writer did not...

Successful Memo Writing

...TO: Accountancy Project Discovery Students FROM: Communications Specialists DATE: Fall 2000 SUBJECT: How to Write a Successful Memo This memo's purpose is to explain how to write a memo that successfully conveys a message accurately, concisely, and coherently. Memos are the major form of internal communication in most organizations, so it is vital that business writers understand how to draft these important documents effectively. This memo will cover the correct memo format first. Then, it will discuss clarity and conciseness, consistency and numbers, passive voice, parallelism, sexist writing, agreement, comma usage and hyphen usage. USING CORRECT MEMO FORMAT Unlike conversations, memos leave a "paper trail," so the company can use directives, inquiries, instructions, requests, recommendations, policies and other reports for future reference. Depending on their purpose, memos can range from a few lines to four or five pages. Shorter memos do not require formal introductory and concluding paragraphs. However, most memos assigned in this class will be at least one page long. Therefore, writers should include the appropriate introductions and conclusions. Every memo should have a header containing the word (prominently displayed) MEMO or MEMORANDUM followed by the organization's name. Writers usually draft memos on company letterhead. Following the header are four crucial pieces of information: TO: Name and title (the title serves as a record for reference) ...

Evaulating Business Communication

...on our Learning Team. The first communication in our report was the Accounting Peer Memo. The memo did convey the intended message that JJJ was not a good investment for the company. The message could of contained more language that accountants use, as this is a communication from an accountant to other accountants. This type of communication was the most appropriate because any other form would not have as effective, for example an email would not have appropriate enough to convey the message professionally enough. The one thing that I would change to improve this communication would be to add an indentation at the beginning of every paragraph to make the look more professionally written. There were no ethical implications in this memo, because it was written by the head of the accounting department to the accountants in the department all were privy to the information. The memo shared right amount of information because it is the Accounting that did the audit and therefore they have access to all information concerning this deal. As the author of the second memo it is hard not to be biased. After reading the memo along the others I now see the flaws in my work. The memo appeared to be put together in a way to convey the intended...

Evaluating Business Communication

...were instructed to send communiqués to four audiences based on the purpose of the communiqué and the receiving audience while projecting the senders leadership style; for the following I will be evaluating the four communiqués my team submitted. In the communiqué sent to the CEO of Riordan Manufacturing, John, the accounting manager, was to advise the CEO of the financial instability of JJJ Company and recommend not moving forward with the acquisition. For this communiqué our team collectively agreed that a formal memo would be the best communication for the audience and purpose, I stand by this decision. The memo was a more formal approach as it was intended for the CEO, which showcased his leadership style more direct and to the point. The structure and layout of the memo was assembled with less of a personal feel as is seen common in e-mails or text to a coworker. The information conveyed in the memo was factual pertaining to the purpose of the memo in regard to the financial instability of JJJ Company. I do not think this memo shared too much or too little information. There was no question of ethics present in the memo as it was examining the instability of the company and it was specifically sent to the CEO. Emails were chosen as the communiqués for the other three audiences. Emails are shorter reports that, “should enable the reader to easily focus on the content as well as easily retrieve it," (Leisker & Flatley, 2008,...
