Introduction

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus was written by marriage counselor and seminar leader John Gray. He provides a unique and practical way for men and women to communicate effectively. This allows them to relate better by acknowledging the differences between them. The book offers real life stories that entertains the reader, but also allows them to gain insight about the opposite sex. The book focuses on the differences between men and women. Not only does the book offer examples of how men and women react differently, but it offers suggestions on how to communicate more effectively (Gray, 1992).
Summary
This book was recognized by New York Times as the number one best seller in 1995. The knowledge gained from Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is not only beneficial for personal relationships, but it can also be utilized in the professional setting as well. The knowledge that is demonstrated in this book can be applied to all arenas of one's life. This book allows men and women to recognize the differences between communication styles; which is one of the most important factors to have in order to work effectively (Gray, 1992).
Definitions
John Gray, author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus conveys through several definitions. One definition explains how men go to their “caves” when they stress or de-stress. Men have a tendency to become withdrawn and want to be left alone. Women on the other hand talk about issues. She seeks relief by talking the situation out and seeking understanding (Gray, 1992). The next concept is “Mr. Fix-it”. When a woman is troubled about a situation, she just wants to talk about it. When he hears the problem, he feels this is his time to give advice and provide a solution. During this time, the woman does not want a solution; she is just venting what has occurred (Gray, 1992).
Themes
Men are from Mars, women are from Venus maintains that there are substantial psychological disparities between men and women. While Gray (1992) deals with interpersonal relationships, he also explains the differences between men and females and how to accept the differences. Females speak metaphorically to fully express themselves. Men on the other hand, men literally mean what they. For example, look at these following dialogue:
Women: “We never go on dates.”
Men: “That's not true, we went on a date last Friday.” When a woman says "we never go on dates" she does not mean never. It is her way of expressing herself that she wants to go on a date with the man. Men on the other hand translate it as literally never and thus the reply would probably make the partner feel even worse off.
Major Concept There are two major themes in Men are from Mars and women are from Venus. It touches upon how men and women deal with stress, and how men and women speak and interpret differently. When it comes to men and women conversing with each other, an invisible barrier is created. Women speak in metaphors, generalizations, and emotionally. For example, Venus asks, “do I look fat?” She does not expect the word fat taken literally. Using the word fat is just a way of expressing the frustration she is feeling. When men speak, it is very literal and they interpret women in the same literal way. One of the most challenging things for men is to correctly interpret and support a woman when she is expressing her feelings. Male behaviors can make a woman feel rejected (Gray, 1992). Depending on the thought process of the Martian, his responses, and actions are perceived as “Cavemannish” (Gray, 1992). A man will first assess an issue or problem by considering how he can solve it alone. Having to depend on other is not necessary. To minimize stress, men retrieve to his cave. Another major concept is the art of active listening. Men and women need to learn how to listen, interpret, and respect each other’s feelings. This can create an atmosphere where communications becomes easier and stronger. Communication plays a vital role in any relationship, culture, or an organization. According to Gray (1992), one must listen and work hard to accomplish this. Gray's (1992) principal message is that excellent communication matters between male and females. In order to have a good communication, men and women have to understand one another. There are plenty of techniques that men and women can use to make their relationships much happier. He asserts that it is a failure to understand how the other communicates, which causes difficulties within relationships. He has empirical evidence repeated throughout the book, that understanding and communication has changed and rescued interaction between individuals (Gray, 1992).
Summary
The book was thought provoking and very enlightening. It has definitely brought attention to me about communications between men and women. As I read the book, I discovered through several concepts the mistakes that I have made in communicating with females personally and professionally. Anyone who reads this and adheres to it will not only obtain a wealth of knowledge but a better way of communication within themselves. Communication is a very important aspect in relationships. The successful functions of relationships are based on good communication. This book is an enlightening because it offers various suggestions for improving relationships in couples. It is imperative to understand the communication style of the opposite gender. Gray (1992) suggests that women want their problems to be acknowledged. On the other hand, men want solutions to their problems. It is imperative that women and men establish good communication. The basis of analysis is that Dr. Gray has provided insightful and guidance for understanding the differences between the sexes.
Conclusion
Men and women typically use different strategies in communication. In general, women's linguistic behavior is disadvantageous compared to men's. Gray (1992) has attempted to demonstrate this fact, through different scenarios throughout his book. Men and women differ in their communicative competency, and their conversational interactions. Some of the major differences include vocabulary, swearing, self-disclosure, intimacy issues, questions, nonverbal behavior, verbal fillers, and workplace attitudes. In the book there are different analogies and metaphors to explain the distinct differences between men and women. According to Gray (1992), these differences need to be accepted and appreciated in order to have fulfilling and successful relationships.

Imperialism In The Great Gatsby

...Bradbury are arranged in a notably singular way. They do not have many characters or events in common, but they are all united by the setting of Mars and, more importantly, the overshadowing influence of imperialistic governments. From the first time humans set foot on Mars to the time they finally leave it, the stories of humans and Martians are all affected by imperialism. Through this persistent backstage influence, Bradbury makes it clear that imperialistic governments seek only power, they are afraid of losing that power, and as a result they will eventually destroy themselves. The first major facet of Bradbury’s message is that imperialistic nations seek only more power for themselves. In the...

Social Contract According to Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau.

...the social contract through an analysis of their theories. Hobbes describes his conception of the social contract in his book Leviathan whereby he begins describing an account of men in the state of nature. In this state, men strive for power, are relatively equal and fight for scare resources (Wolff 2006). Therefore, from theses assumption of equality, scarcity and uncertainty, Hobbes theorized the creation of a state, which could ensure peace and security by commanding people (M.Rosen and J.Wolff 1999). That is why the social contract should be a “contract of submission”, which means that the only way to maintain the security is to completely submit to a sovereign authority. This contract is characterised by two fundamental features, which are a complete submission and an absolute power (J.Hampton 2013). Hobbes argues, only a powerful sovereign can maintain social stability: “Without the sword, contracts are only words" (Leviathan 1651). The result of this contract, citizens must give up their individual power right and sovereignty in the hands of a leader who is committed to establish a safety and stability in the society (D.Boucher and P.Kelly 2012). In the same period, Locke outlines a different version of social contract theory in the «Treatise on Civil Government». According to Locke, men have natural rights, which are right to...

The Colonization Of Mars By Ray Bradbury

...The colonization of Mars is a beautiful drug, the vice of humanity. Mars is overwhelming and consuming, like society. “Mars becomes a way of seeing, of being, a state of mind, a vision, an addiction,” (Harlow 311-314). The allure of Mars lied within the newfound freedom and power its settlers craved. Bradbury best showed the effects on Mars through his character Spender, an archaeologist who rages against his crewmates, murdering them as protest of destructive technology and disregard towards Martian artifacts. When the colonization of Mars begins, many people flee for disingenuous reasons. “The men of Earth came to Mars. They came because they were afraid or unafraid, because they were happy or unhappy, because they felt like Pilgrims or...

The Christmas Truce

...the ideal Christmas Day of fiction. And indeed, the curious manifestations taking place along considerable stretches of the British front that day had a look of the most surprising fiction” (Terraine). The wonderful events that occurred over the Christmas holiday of 1914 revealed to all that the human spirit seems to have a way of peaking through at rather disastrous times showing that even in times of chaos, a glimmer of hope can be seen through the compassion that humans undoubtedly possess. This was proven true during one of the most violent and fatal wars in history. World War I, also known as The Great War, spanned from 1914 until 1918 experiencing around 37 million war casualties (“First World War Casualties”). During the horrors of the war, an almost unexplainable incident occurred; the Christmas Truce of 1914, which restored a bit of hope in many men living in hopelessness. Neither a civilian nor a soldier during World War I could have anticipated the Christmas Truce of 1914 due to its story like characteristics. Although at times seen as merely a myth or a small incident blown widely out of proportion, this truce absolutely happened, and on a larger scale than it is given credit. Much to the surprised of the troops positioned in the trenches, they spent a much merrier Christmas than expected. With high morale that the war was sure to end in the near future with one soldier writing, “… there are no widespread misgivings as to the future. The belief as well as...

They eventually hide in a cave where Carter, surprised by a Thern (a martian race which closely resembles humans), kills him. Carter inspects the body and finds a medallion which ultimately transports him to Mars, also known as Barsoon. Illusion over Reality in the Martian Chronicles

...of illusion is related to the strong emotions of love, hate and empathy.” (Taylor, 2013) In chapter six –the third expedition- is clear that the humans’ illusion is to have their beloved dead ones back. Despite the Captain’s reservations and warnings, everyone accepts the illusion of Green Bluff, Illinois in Mars, which suggests unreality given that it may not be possible to copy an identical place in a different one. However, this acceptance brings comfort to the crew who are blinded by the emotion of having their resurrected family back; these families “were given a second chance to live in a new world” which, at the same time, is unreal because there is no way to bring back a dead person. The Martians linked this illusion to the strong empathy with the crew’s emotions through telepathy in order to carry out a dreadful funeral. Earth men never suspected what was happening until the last moment when they were killed because they couldn’t resist this emotion. In another story, Spender is under the illusion that everyone will understand his concept of Martian culture and his desire of preserving it. He starts killing everybody in order to avoid humans from destroying Mars and turning it into something totally different. Nonetheless, his illusions are broken apart when he realizes that no one will follow...

Dark They Were with Golden Eyes

...attempt to escape war on earth by building a colony on Mars. This suspense tale shows the effects of the Bittering’s odd new surroundings on Mars. Bradbury’s description of Mars and the Bittering family’s reactions to it give warning that something could go wrong. The atmosphere is one of foreboding and apprehension. Slowly, the circumstances tighten around Harry. The author uses character and plot to express the theme that fear creates resistance to change. I feel that this story is a parable, showing the ways that individuals respond to change, particularly to the environments in which they find themselves. The Bittering family; Cora, Harry, and their three children David, Laura and Dan has arrived on Mars. Initially from Boston, the Bittering family has moved to Mars via rocket so as to avoid the antedated destruction from the war occurring on Earth. However, Harry feels out place on Mars, his new home. His unease is so intense that he wants to return to Earth with his family. He thinks that Mars should only be inhabited by Martians, humans should be back on earth and don’t belong. When a war on earth destroys all space ships and prevents his return, he is determined to build a ship for himself if he is to return to Earth. Bradbury expresses the theme that fear creates resistance to change. From the start of this story, it is evident that Harry vacillates embracing Mars, showing his unease upon landing “…sweat poured from his hands and his face and his body; he was drenched...

...to fight about one thing; up or down? Men tend to think a woman should leave the toilet seat up, while a woman tends to think differently. Leaving the Seat up is un sanitary, woman use the restrooms more frequently than men, and this causes unnecessary arguments. I am here to argue a woman’s point of view on the subject. (N.p., 04 Oct. 2013. Web) The first point I would like to make is women go to the restroom more frequently than men. This is not 100 percent a proven fact, but women’s restroom lines are always longer. This is why the seat should be left down. Pregnancy and diabetes are one of the reasons that a person could go to the restroom more often. It’s a simple fact that men cannot have babies, and woman do. It is a scientifically proven fact that woman have smaller bladders. (N.p., 04 Oct. 2013. Web) if a woman is on her monthly cycle, she will need to go to the restroom to also quite frequently. Another thing about woman is they tend to be in the restrooms a lot anyways. We fluff our hair, we powder our faces, and we just want to look beautiful at all times. Woman tend to see the restroom more frequently than men do. (N.p., 10 Nov. 2014. Web. 7 Mar. 2015.) The man’s point of view on this subject is completely different. When a woman goes into the restrooms, they think we just party in there. Men have urinals, where they are free to stand and pee wherever they choose. A man’s bladder is three times larger than a woman’s. Men are built differently, and we tend to...

Ushas; Goddess of Dawn

...Ushas; Goddess of Dawn The Hindu religion is very complex with all of their Gods and Goddess; as well as with its large terms for different things and their practices. The Hindu religion is the oldest religion in India; but recognizes that other religions are equally as suitable. When people look for what gods they wish to write a paper on or just look more into; many pick the main Gods, such as Dyaus Pitr (shining father) and Aditi (mother of the gods). My goal was to look for a god that intrigued me and made me more curious about the religion and the part he or she has in it. That being I chose one the “few goddess and one of the important” gods of the Vedic Pantheon, Ushas; Goddess of Dawn. Ushas is said to be the daughter of the sky and sister of the night. It is said that each morning, this beautiful maiden (Ushas) appears, riding in a chariot pulled by cows. The sun, is said to have been struck by her beauty, and falls madly in love with her as he chases her across the sky. As she passes, she spreads her love and light across the sky; bringing in a new day for mankind. As she passes above the birds they start to sing in praise. She drives off the dark and creatures of the night and prepares us for the light filled day we have ahead. She does this every morning, tirelessly bringing light and life to mankind. Analysis and Responsse: Emma Watson Address

...Kroesche English 102 Section 1025 March 9th, 2015 Analysis and Evaluation: Emma Watson Address Emma Watson is an aspiring leader for the feminist community with no signs of slowing down. All Watson wants is for men to believe in the definition of feminism and that one day men and women will truly be seen as equal counterparts politically, economically, and socially. Although her intent is well-meant; her movement “HeForShe”, along with her address was flawed in many ways. Watson starts off her address by saying “We want to end gender inequality-and to do that we need everyone to be involved.” (Warren) but from there on she only talks about men. Watson patronizes men; unable to see the full spectrum of consequences that come with change, and the illogical statistics and statements that she presents, consequently these flaws have opened the doors to numerous media backlashes. The invitation to men “How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation? Men-I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too.” (Warren) was patronizing to men as if being formally invited on a magnific stage such as the United Nations headquarters was just the thing us men were waiting for. Mia McKenzie reinforces my idea with her sarcastic remarks “It’s not because of the prevalence of misogyny the entire world over. It’s just that no one’s asked. OMG, why didn’t any of us think...

I have included all of the mandatory rooms needed and I have added a separate space shuttle landing bay. For my renewable energy source, I have used solar panels on top of the shuttle. Since there is not that much atmosphere on Mars, more of the Suns radiation will come onto Mars so by using solar panels, I can use that energy to my advantage. I have also used different colours to represent different items. Etc. I have used different colours in the lab to represent different dishes each with different substances inside. I have also used different colours in the house and have tried to minimise the space of each room as much as possible so that you hav more room in the common area or bedroom. Some facts about Mars * It takes Mars 687 Earth days to orbit the Sun * Mars has seasons like Earth, but they last twice as long.  * Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun * Pieces of Mars have been found on Earth. * The tallest mountain known in the solar system is on Mars. How the Media Affects the Asian Community

...Elizabeth Tran Dr. McCarthy English 102 10 May 2015 How The Media Affects The Asian Community Just last month ABC premiered their new show Fresh Off The Boat, which happens to be one of the few shows ever to be centered around an Asian-American family on American television. Growing up in America with first generation immigrant parents has not been easy, and growing up in a culture where you can’t even see yourself in everyday media makes it even harder to adjust. I remember watching T.V. as a kid and rarely did I see any Asian Americans on the screen; and if I did, the characters were portrayed in a way I was not familiar with. Finally getting a show like Fresh Off The Boat makes it seem like Asian Americans are breaking through barriers and making their way into mainstream media. As an Asian American myself, I happen to see this as a huge deal; finally, there is something I can relate to on T.V. Even though the Asian-American community has been excited and supportive of the series, it apparently does not appeal to the majority, and there have already been rumors of the show’s cancellation. But why is a show as innovative as Fresh Off the Boat being cancelled? The show has so many fans and is considered ground braking in the Asian-American community, but that is not enough to keep the show on air apparently. -As a minority in America, Asian Americans deserve to have their culture portrayed accurately in mainstream media. However, whenever there are Asian characters...
