In our society today, it is very sad that the African-American community has lost a great trust and respect for the Mayor, the police commissioner and the N.Y.P.D. Amadou Diallo's shooting was very upsetting for the African-American community. The shooting shock many people because an unarmed innocent black male was shot 41 times in front of his home by four officers that assume him to be a rapist.

Amadou Diallo was a black man in a primarily black neighborhood who saw four guys in the middle of the night and perhaps he thought these four undercover police were somehow looking for trouble. He probably said," I don't want to be a part of this", and tried to leave the scene. If I were in the same particular situation as Amadou Diallo, I would be just as afraid and try to get out of the scene. No one actually knows what Diallo was thinking about, you can only imagine. People often say that if Amadou Diallo had listen to the cops he wouldn't have been killed. I also hear people say the he cause his own death because of his lack of submission.

Personally, I know Amadou Diallo stood innocent before those cops. Diallo was in a situation that he had no clue about. There was an outrage when the verdict "Not Guilty" broke out. Many people were furious, astonished and stunned. When I heard that the case was not guilty I was so shocked because I felt that the evidence was perfectly clear that the four New York police officers was GUILTY. It was not fair to my community or me to see such a case misjudge like that. African-American communities has changed their hearts toward Police

Officers. Police Officers are the ones who we are suppose to trust and entrust with our lives. Obviously, in our world today, that is not the case.

I have never had a dispute with an officer, though I have seen my friends go through events with police officers. For instance, I was in an elevator with my friend and when we got to the last floor, a police officer was right in front of the elevator. So when my (guy) friend and me came out, the P.O. Pointed his gun toward my friend's chest and ask him some questions. The P. O did not approach me or even acknowledge me. The point is that Police Officers tend to focus on black males than anyone else.

Look at the horrible incident with Patrick Dorismond, again the innocent died. It is seriously unfair. I have no faith, no trust and total animosity towards Police Officers. Police are always trying to say black males are violent, when it is the same police officers that provoked these males into getting angry when they are being harassed. Patrick Dorismond was a man that lived for 26 years, and had two children. This man had a record when he was a very young teen. He changed his life and began to live his life the righteous way. Sadly, the police force did not even acknowledge that.

Dorismond was another sad case of an innocent man dying by Police. The mayor Guliani refuses to acknowledge the African-American communities. He does not see that there is a problem with the way that N.Y.P.D handles these situations. It seems to me that the only thing the Mayor and the police Commissioner is

Concern with is records and what they have done for the city of New York; but they are not concern with the African American community issues.

This is something that could happen to anyone. To know that every time they leave house, they are in danger. My mother is frantic about my older brother coming home late and the fact that my neighborhood is always contaminated with police. In my community, black individuals are always getting arrested for nonsense. Now in society today, people are afraid of the Police Force. Complaints will decrease from people and people will take opportunities into their own hands. Police will lack a lot of respect from people and wonder why.

I know people that use to respect Cops and say comments such as: "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon", and so fourth. As of now, these people said that they are not even going to look in the same direction that the police are facing. They are just disappointed with them.

Police officers can only feel the intense emotional pain, only if it happened to their loved ones. People don't deserve to die intentionally. Only if that service is by God. The World just has to realize that life is not permanent, it is temporary. So we as a people have to work together before life is over. I am tired of seeing people die and nothing is done. It is truly horrible how our society works.

...NAME: KANWAR SHAHRUKH ALI ROLL #: 014 CLASS: CV-2D ASSIGNMENT OF: PSYCHOLOGY SUBMITTED TO: MISS BATOOL MENTAL ILLNESSS (PROBLEMS) &WORK When discussing mental problems and work, "work" can mean a number of things. It can mean the workplace, as in where we go to do our jobs. It can also mean the act of working, what we do at our jobs, as a volunteer in the community, or what we like to do in the garden, kitchen or workshop to relax. The relationship between mental illness and work can be looked at in a number of different ways, including: • the stresses and strains today's workplace places on us;  • the incredible pressure placed upon people to continue to perform at work when an illness strikes, and the extra strain this places on their families and friends;  • the difficult barriers those persons diagnosed with a mental illness face in the working world;  • the strain encountered by people who work while they care for someone with a mental illness at home;  • the therapeutic role the act of work plays in helping to reduce stress and improve mental health; and,  • the benefits work can bring in guiding people diagnosed with a mental illness toward recovery, rebuilding their self-esteem and hopefully returning to the jobs they left when the illness struck.  What is Mental Illness? The first step toward discussing mental illness and helping eliminate myths, misconceptions and stereotypes is to understand what a psychiatric illness is. In general...

Mental Accounting

...* What is mental accounting and how does it impact consumer decision making? Mental accounting is an economic term penned by Richard Thaler that describes how people code, categorize , and evaluate economic outcomes. The result is that consumers place their money into mental buckets based on how they got it (i.e. work, lottery winnings, or other windfalls) and the intent for each bucket such as current income, current wealth, and future income. According to Thaler’s theory, these assets are assigned different functions for each group which can lead to harmful and irrational effects on their buying decisions and other spending behaviors. (Thaler, 2008) Thaler purports that the consumer utilitzes mental accounting in each economic situation that that they are involved in and this what influences the decisions that the consumer makes. There are two key concepts in mental accounting. First, there is framing ; which is the way a person subjectively frames a transaction in their mind will determine the utility they receive or expect. This concept is similarly used in prospect theory In which people make decisions based on the potential value of losses and gains rather than the final outcome, and that people evaluate these losses and gains using certain heuristics. This model is tied to real life choices and not to optimal decisions. (Kahneman and Tversky, 1979) Another concept that is important in mental accounting is modified uitility which purports two values to ...

... Prof. Connor Eng 110/ Sec. 21513 April 13, 2011 In 2000, The British Journal of Psychiatry published the article “Involuntary Out-patient Commitment and reduction of Violent Behavior in Persons with Severe Mental Illness” in which states that serious violent acts committed by individuals with mental illnesses are statistically rare events. Still, the potential for violence in a proportion of persons with severe, persistent and often untreated psychiatric disorder stimulates public fear, prevents general acceptance and inclusion of persons with psychiatric disabilities and limits normalization and effectiveness of community based mental health services. Violent behavior among persons with severe mental illness causes public concern and is associated with illness relapse, hospital recidivism and poor outcomes in community based treatment. Violent behavior in persons with psychiatric disorder causes great public concern and is recognized by mental health clinicians as a significant problem associated with illness relapse, hospital recidivisms and poor outcomes in community based treatment. Involuntary outpatient commitment is a legal intervention designed to benefit individuals with severe mental illness who need ongoing psychiatric care and support to prevent dangerous relapse, but who are reluctant or unable to follow through with community based treatment (Swartz 1999). Lowest risk of violence was associated with extended outpatient commitment...

...will disclose my feelings about medical treatment of mental illnesses with pharmacotherapy. Finally I will discuss weather treating mental illness with psychopharmacology drugs are a poor solution or great advancements. Contrary to popular belief Psychiatric disorders are more prevalent than society wants to admit people simply avoid seeking treatment because of the social stigma attached. Psychiatric disorders are those that affect the thoughts and mood of individuals. However, when one hears the phrase Psychiatric disorder the first thought is insanity to the point of being confined to mental institution. Nevertheless this is far from the truth. While these disorders can wreak havoc in lives they can also be managed effectively when the correct treatment plan is coupled with counseling and medication. While treating these disorders can prove a difficult task it is the only way to prevent self-management with drugs and alcohol. While I do believe that people with psychiatric disorders can be effectively treated, one must understand all aspects of the puzzle to ensure the treatment method is effective. Most patients who would be diagnosed as having a mental illness engage in other mood altering drugs in an attempt to self-medicate. These mood altering drugs thus lead to addiction and can complicate the treatment plan, because both issues must be addressed to ensure success. Co-occurring disorders are defined as having a mental illness and substance abuse problem which are independent...

I will do my best to help explain everything I have learned this semester. Media Portrayal of Mental Illness in America The media in American society has a major influential impact on the minds and beliefs of millions of people. Whether through the news, television shows, or film, the media acts as a huge database for knowledge and instruction. It is both an auditory and visual database that can press images and ideas into people's minds. Even if the individual has no prior exposure or knowledge to something, the media can project into people's minds and leave a lasting impression. Because of this people begin to think that people with psychiatric disability, living in a society that widely endorses stigmatizing ideas, will internalize these ideas and believe that they are less valued because of their psychiatric disorder. Self-esteem suffers, as does confidence in one's future. Many people with serious mental illness are challenged doubly. On one hand, they struggle with the symptoms and disabilities that result from the disease. On the other, they are challenged by the...

...Work 30 (2008) 311–316 IOS Press 311 Disclosure of mental health Kathy Hatchard∗ Hatchard Rehabilitation, Penticton, British Columbia, Canada Abstract. As today’s workplaces strive toward a climate of inclusiveness for persons with disabilities, much work remains for employers in developing a process to achieve this ideal. While survivors of mental illness are encouraged to disclose related concerns to their employer, such sharing of personal information remains daunting. Similarly, employers attempting to assist the process are often awed by the extent of collaborations involved in integrating employees with mental health issues back to work as well as concern about compliance with human rights legislation. Needed accommodations in terms of approach to the work itself are often simple; however substantiating the need for adjustments is more complex. This case study introduces a model to support the development of shared goals and shared understandings for return to work (RTW) among workers with mental health concerns, employers, co-workers and therapists. The model of occupational competence is used as a basis to guide dialogue, identify challenges and generate solutions that take into consideration a worker’s preferences, sensitivities, culture and capacities in relationship to the occupational demands in a given workplace environment. A case study is used to demonstrate the potential utility of the model in assisting stakeholders to strengthen collaborations and...

The anxiety disorder that I chose to write about is post-traumatic stress disorder also known as PTSD. A person with PTSD has experienced an overwhelming traumatic incident. Most think of veterans of war having PTSD. Actually PTSD is more common than you think. It can happen because of a car accident, a fire, a rape, child abuse, or even events like September 11,2001. Patients with PTSD experience the traumatic event repeatedly and can last for months or even years after the original event. Over the years there have been many studies to diagnosis and help treat patients with PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder was officially introduced in the psychiatric world in the 1980 according to the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) by The American Psychiatric Association (APA). However the signs and symptoms can be noted as far back as the fifth century. During the First World War soldiers were showing signs of fatigue, impaired vision, nightmares, confusions, and seizure like tendencies. Medical professional didn’t understand the cause and called this reaction “shell shocked” since there were no physical evidence of trauma and as a result the behavior was often perceived as being a coward. ...doctor, we get medication and some rest to get better; most of the times the disease is gone. However, mental illness is not the same. Once the person is affected, it is not a simple process to get back to an average day. It takes time and the right treatment to get better. .. Mental illness has several symptoms that need to meet in criteria of the DSM V in order to be diagnosed. The website MAYO CLINIC provides the following definition of what a mental illness is: “Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. Many people have mental health concerns from time to time.
