Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) directed by Maya Deren and Aexander Hammid is a short black and white silent experimental film which forged a new American avant-garde cinema. The film’s narrative is circular, repeating several motifs. Through creative editing, distinct camera angles and the use of slow motion the surrealist film depicts a world in which it becomes increasingly difficult to catch reality. The film focuses on the struggle of a woman coming to terms with her identity independent of men, emotional baggage and social expectations. Constantly chased by doubles, she is confronted with these many aspects of her life at a table. To set herself free she must commit murder. The films leaves us with the unanswered question is she saved from the flower of womanhood or die without expectations.
From the beginning we get a sense that the film is about an interior reality of fantasies, fear and unarticulated feelings. The film opens with a flower being placed in the middle of a footpath. The flower is then picked up by a women. This women enters a house where she falls asleep on a chair. Images of her sleeping eyes alternate with a window showing the outside world we see a key and a knife, which are symbolic objects in their film. A mysterious black cloaked figure turns, revealing a mirror for their face, this adds ambiguity to the character and suggests this figure could be a double character or a figure of death. A man then enters the house where the phone is off the hook and a mirror breaks into smithereens on the bed. This viewer begins to ask the question are these images external or imagined? Could the broken mirror symbolise violence or insight? The woman sits at a table along with two other figures of herself.
The film shows the dream world of the woman. This evokes symbolic associations and invites narrative speculations. . Following laws of imagination instead of reality. It is a visionary exploration of the woman’s consciousness, showing symbols seen in her unconscious state. These don’t link so in the end the puzzle never comes together, leaving the viewer to make the story up in their own mind. In the film images accumulate, repeat and contrast in associative chains that create internal patterns. Take the key for example. It is dropped, appears in the woman’s hand and disappears. Although no interpretation is definitive it suggests it. This could also suggest to the viewer, their search for the key to unlock the film’s meaning. You could also look at the knife. The knife being connected to the domestic by cutting bread or even domestic violence when the woman appears to be dead in the bed or self-inflicted violence when she approaches her double with it. As well as the window. The window functions as a metaphor for the film frame, representing the border between inside and out. When the woman looks out the window it I an exploration of the women’s subjectivity, it could show her desire, fear and struggle to escape domestic confinement. As the woman approaches her sleeping double with a dagger each step she takes is placed in a space that moves from outside to inside. One on the ocean, the earth, the grass, the pavement, all outside and a rug inside. Inside and outside are explored to show the woman’s association with the house. This could also be a hint to gothic melodramas about domestic threatening
The film aims to transform reality through the power of the imagination. It also subtly shows a critical perspective on conventional film traditions, being made within miles of film studios in Hollywood. The film leaves the industrial tradition behind pursuing film as an art. I really enjoyed this film as it kept me questioning the happenings. I re watched this several times in order to understand it. The more I watched it, the more enjoyable the film became, realising new aspects of the storyline, beginning to understand the symbolism for each object. This is a brilliant example of what an experimental film should be.

Nodal and Mesh Analysis

...Node Voltage Analysis (NVA) applicable to linear networks NVA gives you a process for obtaining n equations in n unknowns. The unknowns are the node voltages. Once you have the node voltages, you can find any voltage or current anywhere in the circuit. Process: (Note the key words to remember each step.) 1. Draw Draw the circuit diagram indicating all element and source values. 2. Label Label a reference node, usually ground or a node with the most branches. Then label a node voltage for all the other nodes in the circuit. You must recall the definition of a node voltage: It is the voltage of the node with respect to the reference node. It is not the same thing as the voltage across a branch. In general, the voltage across a branch between nodes 1 and 2will be the difference of the two node voltages on either side: v12 = v1 – v2 3. Dependant Write the controlling quantity of any dependant source in terms of node voltages. You will need to look for the controlling quantity in the circuit to do this. 4. Super Identify all the supernodes. Then write the voltage of the source inside the supernode in terms of the node voltages on either side. You must recall the definition of a supernode: It is any voltage source with the two nodes on either side of it considered as one big node. Note: Any equations that you get in this step will be part of the n equations. 5. Kirchoff Apply...

...Meshes in the Afternoon Short Essay Life is full of constant struggle. Just when you think life is great and nothing can bring you down, you drop the key, and you fall. You wonder if you could ever make it back up those stairs. In the short film, Meshes in the Afternoon, you see a young lady walk up a flight of stairs to unlock a door, she drops the key and it falls down the stairs where she has to go back down and retrieve it. Without this key she cannot enter her house, but we see later that a man has no problem with the key in the same door. What if the key is not really a key? What if the key is the key to happiness? What if happiness isn’t what we think it is? What if it’s just an illusion of what makes us fall down the stairs. It’s never set in stone how our lives will end up. You have to fight through the obstacles in your way if you want to be happy in life. The same is true in the Meshes in the Afternoon. We see the lady running up and down stairs. I believe this is how her life has been. She has been in an up and down struggle with life. There have been hazards on her path to happiness; this is why we see her hesitate when we see the knife on the stairs. This is the same in life today. It’s never easy, but we keep pushing, we keep running up those stairs. We also see the lady in the film multiple times with a key. This key also has transformed into a knife. To me, in correlation to the stairs, the key serves the purpose of happiness. Even though the key can take...

Avante Garde Film

...Ben Corbett Mick Grierson FI506 Avant Garde Film What Constitutes a Diary Film, and Why Might it be Considered a Form of Avant-Garde or ‘Critical’ Film? In order to answer this question there are a few areas that require specific definition. The term Avant-Garde itself is something that often can differ in its exact meaning due to interpretation. This makes it an almost undesiferrable term for both historians and critics alike. Critic, Ian Christie claims that the term is, ‘always open to dispute and redefinition.’[1] This claim has very strong foundations. The very nature of Avant-Garde film requires it to be at the forefront of experimentation. As new techniques are explored and boundaries are broken down, what may have been at the forefront of experimentation in the Fifties for example, may be one of the most used techniques in Hollywood by the Seventies or now. This gives the impression that to remain innovative, Avant-Garde directors must change style to fit what is required of them during their particular time period. The mention of Hollywood hints at the relationship it has with the Avant-Garde. Murray Smith describes Avant-Garde as a ‘personal mode’, and goes on to say the films are made by, ‘filmmakers alone or in combination with private patronage and grants...

...Circuit Analysis using the Node and Mesh Methods We have seen that using Kirchhoff’s laws and Ohm’s law we can analyze any circuit to determine the operating conditions (the currents and voltages). The challenge of formal circuit analysis is to derive the smallest set of simultaneous equations that completely define the operating characteristics of a circuit. In this lecture we will develop two very powerful methods for analyzing any circuit: The node method and the mesh method. These methods are based on the systematic application of Kirchhoff’s laws. We will explain the steps required to obtain the solution by considering the circuit example shown on Figure 1. R1 + Vs R3 R2 R4 _ Figure 1. A typical resistive circuit. The Node Method. A voltage is always defined as the potential difference between two points. When we talk about the voltage at a certain point of a circuit we imply that the measurement is performed between that point and some other point in the circuit. In most cases that other point is referred to as ground. The node method or the node voltage method, is a very powerful approach for circuit analysis and it is based on the application of KCL, KVL and Ohm’s law. The procedure for analyzing a circuit with the node method is based on the following steps. 1. Clearly label all circuit parameters and distinguish the unknown parameters from the known. 2. Identify all nodes of the circuit. 3. Select a node as the reference node also called the ground and...

How to Make Banana Chips

...for adding sweet or savory spices as well. Ingredients *Bananas (ideally just ripe, with a few brown speckles but no large spots or bruises) *Lemon juice or another acidic juice (optional) *Salt, nutmeg, or cinnamon (optional) Sun-Drying Chips 1. Check your area's weather forecast. To successfully sun dry fruit, you'll need at least 2 days of hot, dry weather and a clear sky (at least 90º F/32ºC with low humidity). Ideally you should allow for a full 7 days of drying, especially if the temperature is below 100ºF/38ºC. 2. Make or purchase an outdoor drying screen. All you need is a rectangular wooden frame with a food-safe mesh stretched across it. .Stainless steel or plastic are the best options for meshes. Do NOT use aluminum, hardware cloth, or fiberglass meshes (unless the fiberglass mesh is clearly labeled food-grade). 3. Prepare the bananas. Since you're using a much lower temperature than other methods, you may wish to slice them extra thin. Peel the bananas and slice them into 1/8 inch rounds (0.3 cm), or at least no larger than 1/4 inch (0.6 cm). If you want to prevent browning, dip the pieces in lemon juice 4. Add additional flavor if desired. Powdered cinnamon adds a strong flavor for sweet snacking. 5. Place the chips on the mesh of the drying frame. Keep them in a single layer with no overlaps. It's fine if their edges touch; they should shrink a little as they dry. 6. Cover the chips with an insect-proof netting or cheesecloth. This will help keep dust...

Hence there is a need for efficient lossless schemes for medical image data. Several lossless schemes based on linear prediction and interpolations have been proposed. Currently, context based approach has gained popularity since it can enhance the performance of above schemes due to the exploitation of correlation within the frame. Since the conception of Mesh based Compression from early 1990’s many algorithms has been proposed and the research literature on this topic has experienced a rapid growth which is hard to keep track of. This paper gives a brief description about the various coding algorithms and advancements in this field. ...Spur Gears General: Spur gears are the most commonly used gear type. They are characterized by teeth which are perpendicular to the face of the gear. Spur gears are by far the most commonly available, and are generally the least expensive. The basic descriptive geometry for a spur gear is shown in the figure below. Limitations: Spur gears generally cannot be used when a direction change between the two shafts is required. Advantages:Spur gears are easy to find, inexpensive, and efficient. Helical Gears General: Helical gears are similar to the spur gear except that the teeth are at an angle to the shaft, rather than parallel to it as in a spur gear. (See the references for more specific information). The resulting teeth are longer than the teeth on a spur gear of equivalent pitch diameter. The longer teeth cause helical gears to have the following differences from spur gears of the same size: o o o Tooth strength is greater because the teeth are longer, Greater surface contact on the teeth allows a helical gear to carry more load than a spur gear The longer surface of contact reduces the efficiency of a helical gear relative to a spur gear Helical gears may be used to mesh two shafts that are not parallel, although they are still primarily use in parallel shaft applications. A special application in which helical gears are used is a crossed gear mesh, in which the two shafts are perpendicular to each other: The basic descriptive geometry for a helical...

...to wooden partitions of the same size, the Expanded Metal is much lighter. This lightness makes it ideal for buildings and structures. It is a well-known fact that the weight of additional components such as partitions affects the stability of the entire structure. Engineers, designers, and architects consider this factor (light-weight) as a top benefit. * High-strength: Any metal can be stronger than wood and other materials of the same size. So, the Expanded Metal can offer higher levels of protection and security than wooded alternatives. The size of the metal sheet affects its overall strength. Also, metal can withstand stress and weight than joints welds and woven meshes. * Acoustic properties: This is a surprising benefit of installing metal sheets on your building. Anyway, only the specially made meshes can offer acoustic properties. * Allows circulation: Air and light can travel through the metal sheet freely. As a result, you can minimize the use of air conditioners and lights on your property. Sufficient air circulation is essential when designing buildings such as parking lot. Expanded Metal types: A wide range of metal sheets are available on the market today. So, you can choose the right type for your specific application from a wider range of products. 1) Standard type: This extremely versatile piece of metal comes in a variety of opening sizes and gauges. Proving a slip-resistant, rigid, and raised surfaces are the purposes of the standard type. Extra rigidity...

Strategic Alliance Disney Pixar

...Strategic alliance is an agreement between two or more organizations, with the aim to achieve a result one of the parties cannot achieve alone. As in the strategic alliance each company maintains its autonomy while gaining new opportunity, it could help a company to develop more effectively, expand into a new market or develop an advantage over competitors, among other possibilities. Would it be a good solution for Disney to create a strategic alliance with Pixar? Pixar’s family oriented content meshes well with Disney’s brand and is an important cog in its cinema/home video distribution, theme parks and consumer products divisions. Both Disney and Pixar are highly successful brands, however would Disney gain from building a partnership with Pixar or rather loose? The first advantage of building up a strategic alliance with Pixar is the fact that it would be less costly than buying it and would require less money investment. What is more, as the companies would share their fixed costs and resources, so Disney would not have to pay for the software anymore. Moreover, both companies would probably build a feature film agreement and co-production agreement and share the costs. There is also opportunity to get a wider access to target market and enlarge distribution channels. However, becoming a partner with Pixar, Disney‘s communication would be less efficient as it would lost control over the decision-making process. Also, the management involvement would...

Greg Grandin Research Paper

...Grandin, capitalism was to be “an example of his particular American dream, of how Ford-style capitalism — high wages, humane benefits and moral improvement — could bring prosperity to a benighted land.” (Pg. 348) Ford was arrogant in thinking that the forces of capitalism once released could be contained. This story can be a struggle to read at times thanks to Grandin’s writing style. Much of the book is spent talking about subplots that aren’t necessarily vital to the story and some information is repeated too much, like the story about Henry Wickham stealing rubber tree seeds to create the Southeast Asia rubber industry. On the other hand, Grandin can make history read as a story through his skillful retelling of consecutive events. He meshes personal accounts and Ford records into a fascinating story with surprising details. Additionally, Grandin puts the story into the historical context of what Henry Ford was up to by explaining the setup of his factories, where he wanted to expand, and his need for rubber. All in all, I would recommend "Fordlandia" to someone interested in the industrial and social history of the early twentieth century, but not to someone looking for a fun, easy, and enjoyable read. ...

My Best Friend

...My best Friend It is often said that a dog is a man’s best friend, and rightfully so. Not only do dogs possess all of the qualities we look for in a companion, but they also lack those qualities and habits that we often find irritating in our friends and family. Dogs are loyal, caring, and enthusiastic. They are not offended easily, rude or mean as people can often be. I believe that at some time in their life, everyone should experience the joy of owning a dog. A dog companion has all the same benefits as a human companion without the constant work and effort required for human interaction. They will listen to you for hours on end without a single argument or complaint, when you’re sad there’s no one better to lay with you while you cry, and when you want to exercise they will be more than happy to accompany you on a morning run or hike. In fact, in many instances I find that my dog gives me a reason to get out of the house, thus motivating me to work out. Dogs are always willing to go on an adventure with you, whether it be going to the lake for a day or walking down your driveway to get your mail. They are always more than happy to tag along with you, making your chores and daily outings a little more pleasant. When I’m having a rough day nothing lifts my spirits more than walking through my front door and seeing my dog, sitting and waiting patiently. I don’t know of anyone else who is more excited to see me on a daily basis. It is an instant self-esteem boost to...

Gaussian kernel smoothing, which weights neighboring observations according to their 3D Euclidean distance, has been widely used in 3D brain images to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. When the observations lie on a convoluted brain surface, however, it is more natural to assign the weights based on the geodesic distance along the surface. We therefore develop a framework for geodesic distance-based kernel smoothing and ...
