In looking inward, we will search for the common aspects of the human experience, the more universal. The wish to talk to someone who is no longer with us, is something most human beings have experienced. Many religions embrace the concept that the community of the dead can help us on this plane. Meta Warrick Fuller’s sculpture Talking Skull, 1937 is a bronze of a woman kneeling before and talking to the skull. (Getlein, 2016.pg 65). Naked and vulnerable, the boy seems to hear an answer to his pleading. She is an African American artist and her work speaks to the African heritage and the disruption that was caused by slavery in this country. (Getlein, 2016.pg 65).
