Best Practice Manual for Supervisors

...Best Practice Manual for Supervisors MGT/210 8/18/2011 Lisa Newman The purpose of a best practice manual for supervisors is to provide a reference guideline for new supervisors. As a reference, this manual could serve as a training aid for supervisors and a management resource for performance evaluations of employees. The manual contains an overview of the best practices to use for the following supervisory responsibilities: • Demonstrating communication skills. • Determining effective orientation and training methods. • Improving productivity for teams. • Conducting performance appraisals. • Resolving Conflicts. • Improving employee relations The approaches described in this manual will assist supervisors in providing the best and most effective solutions to any problems the employees or supervisors might face. This guideline will ensure that supervisors are aware of the objectives and standards to follow to help improve employee’s production. Demonstrating communication skills is one of the most important skills a supervisor can have. Supervisors should be able to direct, motivate, and persuade their colleagues in order to maintain an acceptable working relationship that will encourage positive results. A large part of all three of these skills is the ability to listen and absorb the ideas of others (Rue & Byars, 2004). Active listening skills help supervisors absorb their employees concerns. The key to being an active listener...

Mgt/210 Week Seven

...Week Seven Andrew R. Reyna MGT/210 June 10, 2012 Kathy Willis Week Seven After completing exercise 15-3 in our text, I was rather astonished by the results. The test indicated that I was 84 percent of a leader and 16 percent of a supervisor. While completing this test some of the questions I found to rather hardlined and somewhat biased in the way they were presented and often times the questions were too black and white. Honestly, I find myself to be more of mixture between a leader and supervisor rather than a leader, nevertheless, I digress. I feel as though being a leader, as indicated by the test, the strengths that I would use to approach two of the supervisory responsibilities, would be fairness, patients, ability to find new ways to approach problems, gathering the correct resources, and my cunningness to overstep bureaucracy and see things for what they are. The two supervisory responsibilities that I use my strengths towards would be Demonstrating Communication and Improving Productivity as a Team. I feel as though, after taking the test, that I am a mixture of a leader and supervisor. My leadership consists of being able to approach things as a captain of a ship. This type of leadership holds many things sacred such as, honor, respect, making swift and calculating decisions and more importantly have the confidence of your crew or the people you lead. This type of leadership keeps the big picture constantly in front of him or her while at the same...

This manual is aimed at turning the prevailing and standards and ethics into practical and profitable so that objectives of the organization may best be achieved. 1. Demonstrating Communication Skills. When being a supervisor or manager communication is a key role in everything that is done within the company. Supervisors must pay particular attention to building effective and efficient communication between themselves and others around them. Much of the company time is spent on communication both oral and written.  Doors must be open for employees to share innovative ideas that should be freely discussed for possible utilization.  A supervisor should maintain what is called an “open-door” policy. This is so all employees feel free to communicate with their supervisor and other people in management. In doing this it lets relations start among the supervisors and employees.  It’s important for supervisors to communicate with their employees about things on the schedules, when meetings are going to be and other things that may be on the agenda.  Feedback is another important tool as supervisors to use with their employees. A supervisor needs to offer specific and constructive...

... what they do know, but be sure to explain to them that the company has different expectations and they will be explained in the training process. Once you see what information they might already know, get the trainee hooked on the job. Getting them interested in the work will give them a sense of pride towards the work. When it comes to the hands on training there are a few different options available. On the job training where the new trainee is “thrown” into the work and usually will be working side by side with a tenure employee. Another way would be computer-assisted training. Computer assisted training is one of the best ways to show and explain a new job to an employee without making them feel the pressures of completing the task quickly. Yes, in the end we may be looking for speed, but in the beginning it is important to first find accuracy and effort. Computer-assisted training is just like hands on training. The set up of any material would be the same on the screen as it would be in the store. This gives the trainee the opportunity to make mistakes without causing any loss to the company. Mistakes are also a great tool. When the trainee makes a mistake it is important for them to notice it, and also realize what they did. Give them the chance to fix it. By doing this it will create a sense of ownership the new employee will feel for the job. The ownership will also show in accountability and responsibility. After the trainee is now somewhat familiarized...

This manual will discuss and demonstrate the areas and skills the supervisor needs to focus on to become an effective leader of an organization. The focused areas which will be discussed are; demonstrating communication skills, determining effective orientation and training methods, improving productivity for teams, conducting performance appraisals, resolving conflict, and improving employee relations. We will begin with the most important aspect of a supervisor’s position-demonstrating communication skills. DEMONSTRATING COMMUNICATION SKILLS Effective communication is one of the key components necessary for a supervisor position, because it helps in building trust and respect among all in the organization. The communication can entails more than the content of the statement, but it is also the dialogue used in expressing the statement. Supervisor who are rude, belligerent, or short in demonstrating communication tend to push fellow coworkers away, experience less productivity from the workers, and reveals no foundation of teamwork. Supervisors who mainly focus on work-related information when conversing tend to be viewed as arrogant or callous, and supervisors who tend to focus on social networking rather than useful information can...

Best Practice / Best Fit

... ensuring that human resource practices also align with the business’ overall strategies. As opposed to the best practice approach, a best fit approach may be considered more beneficial to strategic human resource management because it acknowledges the inevitability of uncertainty within the internal and external environment. The main difference between the best fit and best practice approach is that the best fit approach often looks at the current state of the company and designs a strategic human resource model around that. As opposed to the best practice approach, a best fit approach may be of more benefit to some companies as not all companies are the same as not all companies are “one size fits all”. For instance, some practices that may work for a salesman, such as performance appraisal based on sales performance, may not be relevant for workers in a hospital. A best fit approach would also be beneficial to a company in terms of change, because the economy and environmental factors are always ever changing, a best fit approach would have the upper hand in ensuring a company is being proactive, as opposed to reactive to such change. Both of the best practice and best fit approaches influence human resource professionals as these approaches effect strategic human resource management. Firstly, a best practice approach would involve human resource practitioners to identify a list of core practices and how they are to be integrated into the company. This could involve......

Best Practice

...The best practice approach speculates that there is an exact set of human resource practices that can be applied in almost any organizational context that helps to increase the performance that helps to deliver outcomes that are valuable for all the stakeholders, particularly employees. However, the effect of the performance is said to be stronger and more influential if all of the said practices are packed together in order to balance and harmonize each other, thus create positive synergies between them. As a result, the said approach covers different related prescriptive models of human resource management such as high-commitment, high-involvement, high-performance work system, and mutual gains models (Shields 2007, p. 90). The best practice approach is based on the idea that there is a set of best HRM practices and that applying them will help to superior organizational performance. The best known set is Pfeffer’s (1994) model that shows that seven important HR practices of a successful organizations which are: employment security, selective hiring, self-managed teams, high compensation contingent on performance, training, reduction of status differentials and sharing information (Armstrong 2006, p. 65) (see Appendix A).
