Mgt 216 Ethical and Moral Issues in Business

...Ethical and Moral Issues in Business Carlos I. Maldonado MGT 216 Organization Ethics and Social Responsibility February 3, 2011 University of Phoenix Ethical and Moral Issues in Business Moral and ethical issues are always present on each morning newspaper, the daily news, and on our surroundings. They confront us in the fundamentals of our daily jobs and encounter us from our children's daily school activities. We are daily bombarded with discussions of drug abuse, the morality of medical technologies that can prolong our lives, the rights of the homeless and abortion, the fairness of our children's teachers to the diverse students in their classrooms, and sexual morality. Dealing with these moral and ethical issues is often perplexing especially when individuals are trying to think through an ethical issue and determine what questions to ask and what factors should be considered. Morality is a term used to cover those practices and activities that are considered importantly right and wrong; the rules that govern those activities; and the values that are embedded, fostered, or pursued by those activities and practices (Richard T. De George, 2010). Ethical or moral norms apply in business, just as they do in all other areas of human life. There is not separate or esoteric set of norms that apply to business and do not apply elsewhere. People in business are no more allowed to cheat, steal, lie, harm others, violate their rights, and so on, than anyone else...

...Intro Ethics are more important in today's society and business environment than ever before. To really understand this case, it is necessary to understand the times and societal norms of when it occurred. In short, did Ford design the Pinto's fuel system in an ethical way, and should they have redesigned it later? The reason that this case has gotten so much attention is that Ford did not update the fuel system in 1978, because the cost-benefit analysis favored leaving it unchanged. Ford Motor Company defended their decision to not make the production changes in the Pinto by saying that they had used a risk/benefit analysis. They said that they had used this analysis because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) required it from them (Leggett, 1999). Is a risk/benefit analysis really appropriate if the defect in question might lead to someone being seriously injured or killed by a company's faulty product? Conclusion Business changes with the times. In order for a person to decide whether or not Ford behaved ethically, they must consider the standards that corporations follow because of today's society. Business ethics used to be an unfamiliar idea to society, and it was not always practiced as it is today. Today's standards for companies require that profit and other common business concerns should be irrelevant if the question is whether or not to protect people from injury or death. Also eating properly will also ensure that a person is not only receiving the nutrition that their body needs but they are also making sure that they are eating healthy. I think that if an individual who pay more attention to the contents that are within their food choices they would see that those food items were really really bad for them and if a person constantly consumed bad foods on an everyday basis that those foods can also cause them to have high blood pressure, diabetes and even heart conditions. Although it is bad to consume these foods on a daily basis, the body will still need some bad carbs to function. In addition, physical fitness is something that everyone should also incorporate into their lives. Physical fitness and a proper diet will ensure that people live longer and remain healthy so that they can enjoy long full lives. For someone who has not exercise in a while it would be best if they start off with a thirty minute three time a week ......

Xmgt/216 Ethical Dilemma

...The ethical dilemma that I faced happened around ten years ago when I was the manager of a sporting goods store the summer of my first year of college at the university of Toledo. I got the job because of being an athlete my entire life and I love being around sports so for a summertime job I figured being football player for Toledo it would be beneficial for the store and myself to be a part of the team and also to help increase profit and sales because of my athletic background. Well after about a month of working there I had become pretty good friends with many of the employees that also worked there with me. We all bonded pretty quickly because of athletics being our common bond. At play it again sports people traded in there used sports equipment for newer stuff they would get either consignment, trade, or cash all based on condition and also based on market value of the products being traded. After a couple months I started to notice golf products and summer sports products missing granted as an employee we were allowed to sign out any used golf item to take out and try and the goal of that was to be able to give customers imput on how the club or clubs felt played and worked on the course. But as an employee you were only allowed to take out clubs for no more then 72 hrs because of potential profit loss/customer loss as well. A couple of the employees were putting more money into other items people were trading and basically in a way stealing another product...

Ethical Simulation-Mgt 216

...Ethical Simulation After taking part in the ethics game, a couple of issues were presented which needed to be addressed in me taking part as a Quality Control Manager in the G-Bio Sport Company. Decision making steps were used differently for each issue to have the ability to address the issue in the correct fashion. I used two different ethical perspectives, and two different ethical lenses to make my decisions in this simulation. Even using these perspectives, and lenses my management decisions were not affected or influenced throughout the simulation. This simulation does bring up valid insights in how issues come up in my business. The first of the ethical issues presented in the simulation was a product shipped out to the consumer market by G-Bio Sport was tainted with an elevated amount of GBS-Fibranafren. During the most recent QA testing 100% of the products shipped to consumer markets contains an elevated amount of GBS-Fibranafren. The amounts are far beneath the FDA regulations, but exceed the levels we have permitted internally. The risks to consumers being affected by the product are low, but consumers with compromised immune systems could have a slightly higher risk of reactions with continued use of the product. I know based off of the lab results that 100% of the batch shipped to the consumer market is tainted with GBS-Fibranafren. In the second scenario the issue was to decide whether to sell a product that does not meet U.S. safety requirements in a...

... stores. Considered the largest public corporation when ranked by revenue, Wal-Mart boasts of a staggering 2 million employees. Wal-Mart was founded by Sam Walton in 1962 and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972”, ("Largest Retail Chains in the World", 2013). Many different people behind the scenes help keep Wal-Mart a thriving corporation. From the managers in the corporate offices to the managers in the stores, everyone must learn to help each other and work for the good of the company. Managers in the corporate offices must watch over the stocks to make sure Wal-Mart is increasing and to market all areas to maintain their largest corporation in the world. The managers in the stores watch over the sales and the inventory in their individual store. Without a manager to direct the employees, there would be no organization in the stocking of shelves, cleaning and even selling of merchandise. It takes both internal and external employees to keep the company’s reputation strong. Keeping a multinational corporation thriving would not be possible without the help from all the employees all over the world making Wal-Mart a place we trust to bring good quality and prices to our families. Ethics As for Wal-Mart’s ethics, the corporation actually has a committee called the Global Ethics Office. In the Global Ethics Office the team of people discusses the “ethical decision making, provide confidential and anonymous reporting system and leads a...

... for themselves. Looking at Robert, the strategy is a little different. Job enlargement is the best direction to go. His survey clearly showed his interest for developing his skills and stepping in to a higher role. With this type of strategy you can give Robert more responsibilities that will help him become more of a leader and have a better job satisfaction. Using the same theory with him as well will help him to know his own work style so he can develop the best work style for himself. While he is similar with Ed as they both enjoy their job, Robert would like to move further while Ed is content but would like to contribute more and be recognized. Taking a look at each individual and reviewing their results from the surveys showed that while they have similar traits they all have a different motivation and some theories will work on more then one of them but also each person is different and no one plan can be used for all employees. ...Wal- Mart Jose Vasquez MGT 230 MAY 20, 2014 Melanie Behunin Wal- Mart In a variety of business environments around the world, four management functions are usually found. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Planning occurs within these functions of a business, and it helps to deliver strategic value. Organizing will build a dynamic organization and leading will mobilize people. Controlling is part of learning and changing as the organization grows. All four functions of management are the key concept to effective management. Internal and external factors influence the decision-making process that affects management. The competitive landscape is constantly changing; therefore, managers must consider people and businesses around the world. These are used from top-level management to frontline or organizational management. Globalization, technology, innovation, diversity and ethics are factors that affect these business functions. One can examine almost any organization and find this to be true. Wal-Mart is one of the leading retail organizations in the world whose management functions are affected by these factors. Opening its doors in Rogers, Arkansas, Wal-Mart started a profitable business in 1962. The founder, Sam Walton, could never have envisioned where his company would be in the present. Earning approximately $30,000 in 1962, Wal-Mart has evolved into a multi-billion dollar company earning over $15 billion in...

...This document contains CMGT 410 Week 2 Gantt Chart General Questions - General General Questions CMGT/410 NEW UPDATED COURSE CMGT/410 Week 1 Individual Assignment Consider the following scenario: You have been hired by a large company with branch offices around the country to assist with rollout of a new companywide compliance system. While initially the focus was on implementation of the technology, it was found that success will require at least 10 hours of training for all managers across the country on both the use of the new platform as well as a host of new compliance policies being introduced. Of the options discussed, it was generally agreed than the training should be hands-on and conducted in person at a central location. This will obviously require getting organizational buy in as not all managers are going to be willing to commit to taking time out from their normal responsibilities just for some training. In addition, such large scale centralized training has not been done before by this company; therefore, the CEO wants feedback from participants to evaluate the effectiveness of any training sessions. As a result, your manager has given you the responsibility to develop an outline for a proposed project that would meet this upcoming need. Submit a 2- to 3-page memo that does the following: Names the project Briefly describes the project Identifies potential stakeholders directly or indirectly involved Specifies the...
