MOTOVATIONAL THEORY RESEARCH PAPER

In my workplace, the “Goal-Setting Theory” is strongly emphasized as a motivational theory. This seems to be a good motivational theory. In general, positive findings and strong results are behind it. The “Goal-Setting Theory” shows that by being specific in the goals set, having the goal more difficult, and receiving feedback on the performance, the output is higher.

The history behind the Goal-Setting Theory started in late 1960’s. Edwin Locke thought that a major part to motivation was by setting a goal. Through Locke’s findings “we can determine that specific goals increase performance; that difficult goals, when accepted result in higher performance than do easy goals; and that feedback leads to higher performance than does non-feedback.”(Robbins & Judge, 2011, Chapter 7).

There is a way to make the Goal-Setting Theory apply in the workforce today. The system used by some organizations is called the Management by objectives (MBO) program. This system helps put the goals into action in a larger setting. There are four parts to the MBO program including specifying your goal, participation in creating the goal, having a time period on the goal, and feedback regarding the performance on the goal. Using this system can be productive, but hasn’t been proven to always work.

When a specific monthly goal is set in front of me at my current job, I am motivated to reach that goal because my pay is based on it. If I don’t reach that goal, I won’t get paid. In this instance, I am motivated by this specific goal even though it is a negative motivator for me. Regardless I am still motivated by the specific goal. It’s good that I work in this environment where goals are given often. I love tasks, and checking off task boxes. I love seeing measurable improvement, and always having some new finish line to push for.
