Biosphere

...Biosphere is defined as that part of the earth and atmosphere in which many smaller ecosystems exist and operate. Three main subdivisions of the biosphere are lithosphere (solid matter); hydrosphere (liquid matter), and atmosphere or the gaseous envelope of the earth which extends up to a height of 22.5 km. The area of contact and interaction between these components is really important for life, for it is here that the entire life is confined and the basic processes of life like photosynthesis and respiration occur. Living organisms are, mostly, confined to the parts of biosphere that receive solar radiation during the day. As stated above this includes atmosphere, the surface of land, the few meters of soil and the upper layers of water of oceans, lakes and rivers. The illuminated zone may be a few centimeters in turbid water of a river, and up to about 100 meters in clearest part of an ocean. In the ocean, the biosphere does not end where light ceases as gravity enables the energy flow to continue downward, since fecal pellets, cast skins and organisms dead and alive are always falling from the illuminated regions into the depths. In addition to the extension of the biosphere downwards, there is a limited extension upwards also. On very high mountains, like Himalayas, the limit above which chlorophyll-bearing plants cannot live appears to be about 6,200 meters. In simple words, biosphere can be viewed as the part of the earth consisting of oceans and the surface......

Psy/360 Attention Worksheet

...University of Phoenix Material Attention Worksheet Using the text, Cognition: The Thinking Animal, the University Library, the Internet, and/or other resources, answer the following questions. Your response to each question should be at least 150 words in length. 1. How do you define the concept of attention? Attention occurs when a person is mentally focused on someone or something and channels other distractions out. In my opinion, a person pays attention by active listening and intensively observing. For instance a couple on a date in a crowded restaurant gives one another their undivided attention by keeping eye contact and intently listening to everything the other one says to them. I believe it is imperative to show someone you are giving him or her undivided attention when they are speaking to you and that shows them you respect their thoughts and feelings. Moreover, there are two types of attention, one being divided attention and selective attention. Divided attention occurs when a person tries to multi-task and dividing their attention to more than one person or task. Selective attention occurs when person selects one particular person or thing to focus on and they block everything else surrounding them out. This allows them concentrate on one thing so they can better understand and process the information being conveyed. 2. What is the relationship between attention and cognition? • I believe attention can be...

Psy345 Week 1 Worksheet

...University of Phoenix Material Week One Worksheet Respond to the following questions in 75 to 150 words each. 1. Differentiate between sensation and perception. Explain the importance of separating these concepts. Sensation is the process in which sensory receptors are stimulated, producing nerve impulses that travel to the brain, which in turn interprets such impulses as a visual images, sound, taste, odor, touch, or pain. The physical stimulus present in the environment puts out energy that is absorbed by a sensory organ causing sensation. Perceptions is the when the brain performs organization of information it obtains from the neural impulses, and then begins the process of translation and interpretation. It is a vital process that helps us rationalize or make sense of the information related to the physical stimulus. Perception occurs when the brain processes information to give meaning to it, by means of emotions, memories. Perception is the process in the brain that helps us to make sense of what we are touching or hearing or tasting or why it hurts. Sensation is the actual sense we get out of the information the brain is sending. While they work closely together they are two sperperate things. 2. Identify the biological factors that influence sensation and perception. Biological factors like physical, physiological, chemical, neurological, or genetics can effect sensation and perception. Kind of like depth perception and fear of...

Psy315 Week 1 Practice Worksheet

...University of Phoenix Material Week 1 Practice Worksheet Prepare a written response to the following questions. Chapter 1 1. Explain and give an example for each of the following types of variables: a. Nominal: Measurements in which a number is assigned to represent something or someone, and is nothing more than an identifier. Examples: zip codes, license plate numbers, credit card numbers, country codes, social security numbers. b. Ordinal: Measurements that convey order or rank alone. Differences between ranks in ordinal scales do not have meaning, they just simply indicate one value is greater than or less than another. Example: finishing orders in a competition, education level, and rankings. c. Interval: Measurements that have no true zero and are distributed in equal units. For example ratings on satisfactions surveys usually rate from a 1 to a 10 and never have a true zero, because a true zero is when the value 0 truly indicates nothing on a scale of measurement, and interval scales simply do not have a true zero. d. Ratio scale: Measurements that have a true zero, and are similar to interval scales in that scores are distributed in equal units. Ratio scales are the most informative scale of measurement. Example: Counts and measures of length, height, weight, and time. e. Continuous: Measured along a continuum at any place beyond the decimal point, and thus can be measured in fractional units. Example: Olympic...
