...Organizing Paper; Google MGT/330 Management Theory, Practice, and Application Preface Google is one of largest search engine organizations in the world. What began as a small search engine within Stanford University grew into the multi-million dollar company Google. The company began as the brainchild of two Stanford Computer Science student, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Originally, the search engine was named Backrub (Google, 2011). After graduating, the pair changed the company name to Google. In 1998 the first Google website went live. Aside from the relatively quick rise of the company, the organizational structure of the company is impressive. Google is number four on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2010 (CNN, 2010). Two areas in which Google’s leadership has succeeded are technology and human resources. The following is an in-depth look at how Google has organized the human resources aspect and how this organization has affected the company’s culture and employees. In addition, the company’s use of technology is analyzed and how this use has contributed to the success of the organization. Organizing People There are four functions of management: Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (Bateman and Snell, 2009). The way an organization organizes the people it employs and how the company’s human resource department deals with the employees is a huge portion of the organizing function of management. Without people there would likely not be a......

In other words frictional unemployment is the time required for people to search for a new job. Frictional unemployment is usually short-term and does not affect the public policies or social welfare. In contrast, structural unemployment is occurred as a result of people’s inability to match their skills with existing job opportunities. The reasons for structural unemployment could be the changes in structure of the nation’s economy, which is a result of changing tastes and demand conditions or from changed production processes. Finally, cyclical unemployment occurs mostly during recessions when there is a lack of job opportunities (Arnold, 2013, p.140). Full employment occurs when the economy operates at an unemployment rate which is equal to the sum of seasonal, frictional and structural unemployment rate. In other words full unemployment could also be defined as the unemployment rate in an economy without the cyclical unemployment. This is because cyclical unemployment varies with the business cycles (Hall & Lieberman, 2012, p.556). Furthermore, even when the economy is at full employment......

Functions of Management Mgt330

...Functions of Management MGT330 July 25, 2011 Joey Martin Functions of Management In the following paper I will define the four functions of management, which are Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling. Each function defined will explain how the area relates to my organization. One of the main keys to success in any organization is planning. An organization that does not include the planning process is sure to have a malfunction. According to (Bateman & Snell, 2009) “Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals. Planning activities include analyzing current situations, anticipating the future, determining objectives, deciding in what types of activities the company will engage, choosing organization’s goals.” In the organization in which I work planning is very essential. When you plan you decide what needs to happen at the present and in the future. I currently work in Student Services of an advisement center. When working in the advisement department of a university planning is used in the capacity that the students stay on track taking the correct classes in order to graduate at a specific time. Proper planning allows the students to have a time line in which to follow in order to register for these classes. If there is a class that is needed, but not available planning helps to have a second and or possibly third option available....

The structure of an organization is the foundation that an organization positions itself on and determines the success of the organization. Without management, organizations would lack defined purpose and goals. Management in organizations has led to studies of various theories of management. There are numerous theories and ideas that have shaped management principles within organizations. Despite the ever changing environment of organizations, there are five core functions that have remained intact. These functions are: leading, planning, staffing, organizing and controlling. Every organization and its needs are unique and specific to that organization. Every organization will have a different approach and way of operating, but these five core functions are the constant in the implementation of each organization’s goals. These core functions can be observed in one of the retail industry leaders, Macy’s. When coming up with the job design I need to look at every job that will need to be done at each location and what parts of each job will work well with one another. I do not want the job of a cook to be that of a drive through attendant as well, if I do they might burn the food. ...Discussion Question 1: In your own words, how would you describe the control function of management? My definition of the control function of management would simply be explained as controlling the environment. Management is in charge of making sure everyone is doing their assignment requirements for their position. Doing this function gives management a better understanding of which employees are performing their duties and which employees might need a little push in the right direction. Why do you think the controlling function of management has a negative connotation? I figure the word alone gives off negativity, “controlling.” I mean who really wants to be controlled? Even if the controlling happens in a work place the word can still sound a little negative. When one works with others they would like to think of everyone working together not one being controlled be another. How would you say the controlling function of management has evolved? I believe the evolution of controlling function of management has evolved by adding a Human Resources department. Think about how business was back in the 1930s if you were caught doing something not in your normal duties you were just fired on the spot, there was no way to fight for your job back, no one to stand up for your rights and defend you, you were straight out of luck and just out of a job. Discussion Question 2: What are some different types of control mechanisms that you have seen used? Well one control......

Management and Leadership

...Management and Leadership University of Phoenix This paper will examine the roles and responsibilities of organizational managers and leaders in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. I will also differentiate between management and leadership within AT&T as well as describe the roles in which both managers and leaders play in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. I will go on to explain how the leading function of management supports the creation and maintenance of a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. Finally, I will conclude with my recommendations that both managers and leaders can use to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. The responsibilities of the managers within AT&T are to monitor employees’ performance, provide feedback during progress reviews, and identify areas of improvements and employee recognition. AT&T also has leaders, which are classified as work leaders. Their duties are to aid employees like themselves in their day-to-day job duties. Work leaders tend to be more experienced employees who managers delegate this responsibility. Although the two terms management and leadership appear to be similar, I can assure you they could not be more different. Someone can be a manager but not necessarily a leader. By definition, managers have subordinates and leaders have followers. (Changing Minds, 2008) There are vast dissimilarities between a...
