In my 17 years of being alive, I was forced to go from a child to carrying myself in the way a man should within a matter of months. All of my methods and realms of thinking had no choice but to be elevated. My name, Marcus James Evans, went from being a simple source of identity to being my title that I live to define everyday I wake up. August 9, 2014 African American teen Michael Brown is shot dead in the street by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Just days later almost the entire community of Ferguson, Missouri turned to complete riot. These riots raged so violently that United States military troops were called in to contain the upset crowds. And for 4 long months millions across America were highly enraged by this unjust murder. …show more content…
Although an incident like such is nothing new to America, the dynamics of this case took a complete spin when it was caught on clear video. Millions of Americans including myself witnessed the recorded murder of Eric Garner from the moment the NYPD officer initiated the chokehold to the moment after Garner's lifeless body collapsed to the concrete. As a result of both of these murder cases none of the officers involved were indicted. After Darren Wilson, the officer that ended Michael Brown's life, was not indicted, Ferguson violently erupted once more. The Ferguson riots sparked other movements around the country, including here in my hometown of Buffalo, New York. As an act of solidarity the African American community in my school agreed to wear all black to honor these two tragedies. Unlike many preceding generations I have come to see that my generation has been forced to grow up faster than ever before. Seeing these deaths of African American men has forced me to the understanding that there's more to life than taking care of myself and possibly one day a family. The fact that we never know which breath will be our last has forced me to mature and use as many breaths as possible to push for the cause of making sure the next generation is educated in their unpredictable walk of life. My new found knowledge and way of thinking has opened my eyes to seeing the reason we live is to set the next generation up to be as successful as

Why Do Police Officers Wear Body Cams

...A young African American named Trevon Martin was harmed by a security guard. Two other African American boys were killed also by police officers; their names are Michael Brown and Oscar Grant. There was also a claim that police officer was beat. Body-cams can help solve the problem of false claims not only for citizens but officials as well. One case in particular that would better support body-cam would be that of Trevon Martin. Martin was born on February 5, 1995. He was a junior at Dr. Michael M. Krop High school and he lived with his mother and his brother in Miami Gardens, Florida. George Zimmerman was born on October 5, 1983 in Manassas, Virginia. He was employed as a fraud investigator for insurance. The retreat at twin Lakes was a gated community in Florida. Trevon Marin was visiting his father’s fiancé’ and her son along with his father on February 26, 2012. At 7:09 p.m., George Zimmerman called the police nonemergency number to report what...

America Today

...of African-American civil rights movements have been the post-Civil War constitutional amendments that abolished slavery and established the citizenship status of blacks, and the judicial decisions and legislation based on these amendments, notably the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision of 1954, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These legal changes greatly affected the opportunities available to women, nonblack minorities, disabled individuals, and other victims of discrimination. The Brown decision demonstrated that the litigation strategy of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) could undermine the legal foundations of southern segregationist practices, but the strategy worked only when blacks, acting individually or in small groups, assumed the risks associated with crossing racial barriers. Thus, even after the Supreme Court declared that public school segregation was unconstitutional, black activism was necessary to compel the federal government to implement the decision and extend its principles to all areas of public life rather than simply in schools. The initial phase of the black protest activity in the post-Brown period began on December 1, 1955. Rosa Parks of Montgomery, Alabama, refused to give up her seat to a white bus rider, thereby defying a southern custom that required blacks to give seats toward the front of buses to whites. When she was jailed, a black community boycott...

Argumentative Essay: The Tragedy Of Racism

...He was sent to patrol a public housing complex in Brooklyn where reports of violent crimes had spiked. He had a habit of putting his finger on the gun’s trigger due to his occupational hazard. It was however against police policy for officers to walk through buildings with their fingers on the trigger as guns were drawn. The policy should be retaught and examined for new officers, and for that matter of fact, due to the high rise of the violent and crime in that area, the police should assign experienced officers to perform the tasks. Furthermore, through reports, the stairwell was completely dark and the gun went off by accident, bouncing off from the walls, hitting Akai Gurley’s chest. Thus demonstrating that Peter Liang did not shoot him on purpose. Moreover, after the accidental shooting, Liang was still under shock and did not respond quickly enough to call an ambulance or help. Because of under training, and lack of experience, he was unable to react quickly to what had happened. It was truly an accident. According to the News, “During the past...

Ferguson Case

...One of the biggest cases that is surrounding the news today is the story Michael Brown and Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. This case began on August 9th, 2014 when Darren Wilson shot 18 year old Michael Brown. When he was shot, Brown had been unarmed. Before the shooting took place, Brown had been suspected of being involved in a robbery. Around this time, Wilson had been leaving another call that was made, when he stopped Brown for being in the street. He didn’t realize at the time that Brown was the suspect that was involved in the robbery. When he stopped Brown, he physically assaulted Wilson by pushing him into the car. The rest of what happened is still up for debate but what they believed to have happened is that Wilson pulled out his gun and when he did this Brown put his hand over the gun and Wilson shot. Wilson continued to shoot Brown six different times and kill him. Since Brown was unarmed and Wilson originally had no reason to stop Brown other than the fact that they were in the street, many people believed that Wilson did what he did out of racism and that Brown was the victim and not Wilson. This case went to trial and after three months the grand jury decided not to indict Wilson for the shooting of Brown. Throughout this paper, I will go through each point of view of Brown being the victim and Wilson being the victim. I will also use different victim theories to explain each of their situations. First off, we will look at this case from the point of view...

Racial profiling affects a wide array of communities of color. More than 240 years of slavery and 90 years of legalized racial segregation have led to systemic profiling of Blacks in traffic and pedestrian stops. Since September 11, 2001, members of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities have been profiled by airline personnel, federal law enforcement, and local police. I chose the New York post article to describe what happen to Eric Garner because the source is reliable it comes from a well know publisher who has been established for many years with lots of readers, they only talk about the facts and they take a neutral point of view. http://nyti.ms/1lceF3h I chose the Washington post to describe what happened to Michael Brown again the source is neutral and only report the facts about the case I think the article is...
