His mother, Katherine Esther Scruse, was a devout Jehovah's Witness, and his father, Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson, a steel mill worker who performed with an R&B band called The Falcons. One night while Michael was asleep, Joseph climbed into his room through the bedroom window, wearing a fright mask and screaming. He said he wanted to teach the children not to leave the window open when they went to sleep. For years afterward, Jackson said he suffered nightmares about being kidnapped from his bedroom.[5] Joseph acknowledged in 2003 that he regularly whipped Jackson as a child.[6] Jackson first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in an interview with Oprah Winfrey broadcast on February 10, 1993. 1980 Dance

...1980s Evolution of Hip Hop When hip hop first started it was a performative, but informal, dance culture. B-boys and b-girls (terms introduced by DJ Herc) would be invited to show off their moves by other people on the street, on the basketball court, or wherever the group happened to be. As the moves became more institutionalized (for example, breaking, popping, and locking), and more and more dancers got caught up in the rhythms of the music, more formal dance venues arose. While these performances were more formal, the competitive nature of hip hop remained, as well as the circular nature of the audience surrounding the dancers. In the 1980s and 90s more clubs featured hip hop DJs, especially in the larger cities, and dancers of all skill levels would hit the dance floor. Both informal and formal competitions often arose. Informal competitions started when a few truly exceptional dancers were noticed on the dance floor; the rest of the people would back off and allow the leaders to duke it out. As these informal competitions became increasingly common and popular, announced competitions became part of a night out at hip hop clubs. Whether they arose organically or they were advertised in advance, this competitive nature helped hip hop retain the "battle" culture that has existed since the beginning. This type of competition can also be seen in other dance forms, perhaps most notably in tap dancing of the early 20th century. *The Hammer Dance (Mc Hammer) MC Hammer brought rap...

Short Story

...First Semester Back at College When I first decided to return to college for spring semester, I didn’t realize how difficult it would be. The last time I stepped foot on this campus was eight years ago and I didn’t have any responsibilities. I wasn’t a mom or a wife back then. I was 18 years old and full of ambition and the desire to make something of myself. But things changed once I met with my now ex-boyfriend Michael; he had money and owned an online marketing company. It was exciting to learn new things and Michael helped me create my own online marketing company. That seemed like an amazing feat at the age of 19. I didn’t have a care in the world or any desire to go back to college after seeing the amount of money I was making. Unfortunately, being young and not smart with my money, I blew it all on stupid stuff and lived in the moment I didn’t save any money or even think about my future. After three years of having my own online marketing company and working with Michael, we decided to merge our companies into a larger company, but that was a mistake. Michael had plenty of money but he turned to drugs and started to become violent towards me. Before I knew it, I had been with him for five years, through the good and the bad. Unfortunately, it became apparent that he wasn’t going to change when he became so physically and mentally abusive I had to leave him and our joint company behind. I had to start over and that wasn’t easy. I was 23 years old with no college education...
