For this observation, I observed an eighth grade algebra one classroom taught by Ms. Konopinski. This classroom runs with the hybrid system since the middle school has adopted this system. When the students come in the classroom they pick up a daily agenda and start working on their warm up, which consists of about ten questions. The students are given about seven minutes to complete the warm-up then Ms. Konopinski went over the problems using the elmo to display the worksheet and work on the board. Each week the class is given a warm-up quiz, where they are given so much time to complete the problems that are given by copying down the answers. Once the warm-up was over, the students got out their homework and Ms. Konopinski went over the answers and answered any questions the students may have. They had a maze worksheet for homework so it was simple to see if the students had got a question wrong because their puzzle was wrong. After they went over the homework, the students transitioned into hybrid station work. For the independent station, the students were working on think through math, which is a program like imagine math. For the collaborative station, the students were working in groups or alone to complete a worksheet that reviewed the rules of translations, then once …show more content…
Konopinski went over the method of using the generic rectangle to factor and simplify the expression. Once the students went over two examples like this, the students were introduced to a new method, the foil method. For the foil method, the students were taught first, outside, inside and last to know which order to multiply the variables and numbers. They should have a smiling boy if they have multiplied all the correct terms. Then the students went on to start on their homework, which were about eight problems in their books. Many of these students are located in large, mainly urban high schools around the country (Balfanz, 2007). Urban high schools face five common problems: low student engagement, poor prior preparation, low ninth-grade promotion rate, low graduations rates, and isolation from the community (Herlihy & Kemple, 2004). When at-risk students are exposed to such environment everyday, they have a greater probability of dropping out of school (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009) Nationally, 1.3 million members of the public high school class of 2009 failed to graduate with a diploma with the majority of that population being African American, Latino, and Native American (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009). The majority of these populations attend schools in urban high schools in majority cities (Balfanz, 2007). Many schools do not have a system that identifies students who are at-risk of dropping out school, so these students are ignored.
