Unit 2 - Starting a Business

..."We're Moving On Up" Mike and Earl Moore, owners of College Men's Unlimited, have just signed a 5-year lease in the new College Town Mall. The new mall is ideally located for their business—a short walk from campus and only two blocks from downtown. The far side of the mall is bounded by the most prestigious homes in the city. It will be opening in 5 weeks, and Mike and Earl are lucky to have such a prime spot. Ray Thomas, their banker, called them last Wednesday with word that the store, which had agreed to take the space they just leased, had canceled. Eighteen months ago when the mall had put this location up for lease, they were not in financial condition to make a commitment. In the last 18 months, however, business has been exceptional. The city has grown, and the college has experienced expanded enrollments. By next Monday morning, Mike and Earl must provide the mall developer with a complete layout for their new store so the developer can assign an emergency work crew to complete the store for the grand opening. College Men's Unlimited is a full-line men's store offering middle- to upper-quality traditional men's wearing apparel. The present location is an old two-story house that Mike and Earl converted into their combination business and living area. The house has 4,000 square feet of area, 3,600 being used for the store, and the rest for a 3-room apartment. The new store has a 40-foot front and is 70 feet deep. The mall developer is willing to put up walls......

Baltimore Orioles

...The modern history of the Orioles can be traced back to the original Milwaukee Brewers of the Western League. The Brewers were there when the Western League renamed itself the American League. In 1902, the team moved to St. Louis and became the “Browns”. In their first season in St. Louis the Browns finished in second place. The Browns became more popular than their rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, beating them in attendance. In 1951, Bill Veeck, the former owner of the Cleveland Indians, purchased the Browns. Veeck attempted to move the Browns back to Milwaukee ("Baseball-Statistics"), but was blocked by other American League owners, seemingly for reasons that were more personal than business related. After Veeck was forced to sell Sportsman Park to the Cardinals, he sold the Browns to a Baltimore-based group led by attorney Clarence Miles. With Veeck gone, the American League owners quickly approved the relocation of the team to Baltimore for the 1954 season. The Browns were renamed after their move to Baltimore. The Browns name was associated with losing, so the new team name would be changed to the Orioles. The name has a rich history in Baltimore having been used by the Baltimore baseball teams of the late 1890s. In 1901, the American League announced that the Baltimore Orioles would move their franchise to New York, becoming the New York Yankees. After the move, the Orioles competed in what is now called AAA level from 1903-1953. Babe Ruth pitched for the AAA Orioles......

...Soon after news of Tiger Wood’s marriage issues hit the mainstream media, his sponsors were forced to decide what to do with one of the world’s most marketable athletes. At the height of his success on the PGA tour, Woods was one of the sporting world’s most desired figures for sponsors to partner with. With golf alone, Woods helped Nike reach figures of over $650 million in products sold (CBS/AP, 2009). Other major sponsors that Woods partnered with included Accenture, AT&T, PETA, Gillette, and Gatorade. Each of these nationally and globally know companies decided to end their endorsement partnerships with Tiger Woods in the weeks and months following the post-Thanksgiving incident and increasing marital issues. The only sponsor that has continued to endorse Woods has been Nike (CBS/AP, 2009). The main reason for these companies parting ways with Woods is due to an emphasis in keeping their names in good standings. In any form of public relations, you always want to have your company or business looked at in a positive light. When CEO’s and presidents of Woods’s former sponsors made remarks as to why they had terminated their relationship with the sports icon, they all mentioned that it was imperative to put the organizations good name as the top priority. This has been most reflected by Accenture’s reason for dropping Woods (Hamblen, 2009). The consulting firm had seen an increase in revenue in the months leading up Woods’ public relations nightmare (Hamblen, 2009).......

Assembling the new store is 40' x 70' and is rectangular in shape; I will explain the layout for the new store and decide what merchandise should be placed where. I will also decide the size of the office and storage space that is needed and where counters should be placed. Other external considerations will also be included in the layout and why they should be there. Although Mike and Earl Moore are moving on up, they are also moving on up to a place that has less space. There will be eight hundred square feet less to be exact. ...track with the course work. These stages are basically guidelines as to where the group stands and how they are progressing. The primary problem with the group is communication. Basically after the initial meeting, it seemed as though nothing could be accomplished due to everyone’s schedules not matching up; people were missing meetings, and the group even met without informing everyone. Communication is the most important thing in any situation just about, as you can see it has been so important in this case that it has caused them to fall behind with the assignment being due in a week. Another problem that the group seems to be facing is Mike! It seems as though Mike is the only person who doesn’t want to comply with the rest of the group, constantly making excuses and not really doing his full individual part. I understand that Mike is having girlfriend issues, but it is Christine’s job to explain to him that this is as important as his girlfriend because his actions can affect everyone’s grades. Foreword to Smoke in Their Eyes, Michael Pertschuk

...Michael Pertschuk, known as Mike to his friends and foes, has an ability to win over the toughest advocates, their critics, those who are self-righteous and those who are cynical. Liberal legislators and conservative ones respected Mike's policy entrepreneurship, his craftsman's drafting abilities and the speed with which he can frame an issue so that it resonates with most people who want to solve a public problem. What gives Mike a powerful legacy is that he has stood up to those interests that choose to exploit people and get teenagers hooked to the dangerous tobacco addiction. The record substantiates that the tobacco industry has no redeeming qualities made certain by the incontrovertible fact that there is no such thing as a good cigarette. Mike was an early David in this fight. His sling shots fired precisely. Just as David did, Mike built an army strategically deployed around the country with an array of weapons and tools that bested the industry time and time again. The army developed it owns leaders, learned from advanced countries such as Canada and Australia and inspired advocates around the world to overcome the killer tobacco and its corporate executives, and their hired guns—lawyers, lobbyists and their spin meisters. The public interest world that Mike is part of, as a former Senate staff member, Chairman and Member of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and as one of the creators of the Advocacy Institute is a Pragmatist with high......

Salem's Lot: Corruption Is Vampirism

...Corruption is Vampirism For centuries, vampires have always been the symbol of corruption. It has been said and illustrated by many in books and essays that corruption is extremely similar to vampirism. It starts off with just one and it then multiples like cancer, dominating the society. Once corruption starts, it spreads so quickly that it is as though it is impossible to stop it. In Salem’s Lot, King uses vampires coming into the town to symbolize its destruction due to the corruption within a society. Salem’s Lot vampires’ thirst for blood is represented as the political corruption that destructs the society. The wealth and the power are the blood that the corrupted are in constant hunger for; no matter how much they have, there is never enough to satisfy them. Vampirism is symbolic of corruption. Mirroring vampires’ desire for blood, the corrupted always desire more money and more power; the more they have, the more they want. According to Casebeer, “King has created many novels which allegorically address current social dilemmas: the corruption of school and church, the government, the small town, the family, and etc.” (43) In 1975, King wrote his novel, the Salem’s Lot demonstrating the vampires’ invasion to the town as a symbol of the corruption in the world. Mr. Straker and Mr. Barlow are the outsiders that stand for the beginning of a corrupted society. A vampire comes Chiu 2 to the small town of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine. He converts some of the......

I think, that would help to understand the ideas, they were representing. Those biographies I have found in internet. So. Martin Luther King and his movement. Martin Luter Kingwas a husband, a father, a preacher-and the preeminent leader of a movement that continues to transform America and the world. Martin Luther King, Jr., was one of the twentieth century's most influential men and lived one of its most extraordinary lives. Now, in a special volume commissioned and authorized by his family, here is the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., drawn from a comprehensive collection of writings, recordings, and documentary materials, many of which have never before been made public. Written in his own words, this historymaking autobiography is Martin Luther King: the mild-mannered, inquisitive child and student who chafed under and eventually rebelled against segregation; the dedicated young minister who continually questioned the depths of his faith and the limits of his wisdom; the loving husband and father who sought to balance his family's needs with those of a growing, nationwide movement; and the reflective, world-famous leader who was fired by a vision of equality for people everywhere. One of the reasons, why M.L. King became so popular and could get so far, was the fact that he graduated...

Malcom X

...Malcolm X Malcolm X was a well-known civil rights movement leader as well as a great Black Muslim as well as a smart and powerful man. He was born as Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925 to his parents Louis and Earl Little. His father was a well-known Christian preacher who followed the teachings of Marcus Garvey a former well established African American leader. Growing up and watching his father’s sermons would add to his knowledge of the racial tensions he would soon be faced with as he got older. His mother Louis Little was the product of the slave and master relations as she was mulatto and she hated herself for it as this also was a cause to his inspiration to become a serious activists in the civil rights movement. As he grew up he did very well academically and was very well liked by the whites who accepted him due to his lighter skin tone but as time went on he became very street minded in his ways as he grew up as a thief and street hustler as well as a pimp and drug dealer. All those events led him to prison where he was sentenced to 10 years and in that 10 years he became a changed man by joining the Nation of Islam and becoming a Black Muslim. He then changed his last name from Little to X as he did not want to take the name of a prior slave owner of his ancestors and eventually went on to become one of civil rights movement top respected leaders. I believe Malcolm X should be remembered by his successes such as his evolvement from a street minded...
