Sforza Art Patrons

...One of the lesser known families who patronized art during the Renaissance was the Sforza family. The Sforza family was founded by Muzio Attendolo Sforza. Muzio was a powerful Italian war leader. The name Sforza comes from Sforzae which means to exert or force. The Sforza rose from a lineage of peasants. They used their positions as war leaders to become rulers of Milan. The Sforza family was considerably similar to the Medici family of Florence, Italy. Many members of the family held important positions within the church and political arenas. One of the Sforza’s most well known commissions would be the Last Supper by Leonardo DaVinci. This piece was commissioned by Duke Ludovico Sforza and Duchess Beatrice d’Este. Some sources say The Last Supper painting was originally created to serve as a centerpiece for the family’s mausoleum. It took DaVinci three years to complete this painting as he did not work continuously. I discovered that DaVinci was a well known procrastinator. It was normal for him to even leave works undone sometimes. The Last Supper depicts the story of Jesus announcing to his twelve disciples that one of them would soon betray him. The piece is a mural that measures some 15 feet by 29 feet. While most paintings of this time were created with oil paints, this particular piece was created with tempera on gesso, pitch and mastic. Leonardo used some experimental techniques for this painting which over time, proved to be a bad idea Once......

Coco Channel

..."Coco Chanel wasn't just ahead of her time. She was ahead of herself. If one looks at the work of contemporary fashion designers as different from one another as Tom Ford, Helmut Lang, Miuccia Prada, Jil Sander and Donatella Versace, one sees that many of their strategies echo what Chanel once did. The way, 75 years ago, she mixed up the vocabulary of male and female clothes and created fashion that offered the wearer a feeling of hidden luxury rather than ostentation are just two examples of how her taste and sense of style overlap with today's fashion." Coco Chanel represented a shrewd businesswoman, who defined aspects of the entire fashion industry. As a designer, her business acumen was undeniably one of the best in the business, although her methods in many instances were questioned in the past, due to dalliances with married men and dealings with the Nazis. Born in Saumur, France in 1883, Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel's life was far from ideal. If you examine her childhood and early years, the periods in no way reflect the image people think of, when they hear the name of the luxurious label. At the young age of 12, her mother died of tuberculosis and her father placed her in an orphanage. While living in the orphanage -- she learned a useful and important trade from the nuns who raised her -- that of a seamstress. Her skills as a seamstress would ultimately transform her destiny, and the toughness of her childhood is reflected in how she engaged with the world...

...The city where I live When you say “ my native town” you think of a place in our planet which is either connected with your birth or a memorable event on your childhood. You usually remember your friends or your first love. But I think that a city can be truly consider yours, if it has left a long-lasting impression your soul. Every tiny part of your heart is connected with your town and you do not regret that there has remained an important part of your soul. Many people spend their entire life in the same place, go along the same streets, see familiar buildings, city views, communicate with the same people without thinking how strongly accustomed they have become to their city, how close they are. Cities can trace the fate of its people, silently observe and keep in the memory different events. I believe that every city is a living system, a complete organism in which various processes occur and above all the citizens are an integral part of this complex system. Each city like a person has its own history, its own individual character, its foundation and traditions. There are cities where people can carry out their dreams and aspirations. People aspire to these cities, hoping to find themselves to determine their appointment and change lives for the better. It often happens that the city welcomes guests who soon become relatives. But sometimes it happens quite differently, a city, especially a large one doesn’t accept strangers doesn’t give a chance and an......

Although he had known this request would be coming at some point, he had expected a bit more time. His recommendation had to be presented to the Prada Board of Directors at their annual general meeting scheduled in two days, on January 27. THE MISSION The board requested that Santini prepare a report recommending and ranking alternatives for raising over 1 billion euros within the next six to 12 months. With more than €1 billion of debt maturing within 12 months (almost half in the next six months), Prada needed to have a credible plan in place to meet these obligations. In addition to the capital to refinance its existing debt, Prada had identified Asia as an area for future growth, and this growth also required capital. Asia was currently experiencing significantly higher growth than other parts of the world, and Prada wanted to be able to take part in and benefit from this. My grandmother was right when she quoted this truthful sentence. The US-based analytics company Global Language Monitor awarded London as the capital of fashion for the second consecutive year in 2012 (Vogue news, sept 2012) and London deserved it all for sure. People feel good in expressing themselves, no matter which kind of style they fit in, no matter whether they follow minimal total black or eccentric and colourful trends. London’s peculiarity involves the different shopping areas offered to the fashion world, where customers can find their own personal space and keep always up to date with their favourite trends. From the high street middle market fashion to the haute couture, from the punk that will never die to the new special trends. Fashion changes quickly. “It is important for past......

Bramante and Aesthetics of High Renaissance

...fairly certain that Laurana, the architect of the ducal palace at Urbino, showed him the way to the impressive style of the High Renaissance. Bramante's artistic activity is divided into two periods of which the first was spent in Milan and the other in Rome. His work in Milan is characterized by a pronounced picturesque, decorative style. In Rome, on the other hand, we find a style which is more proper to the High Renaissance, exemplified in works that are, as far as possible, free from all external decoration, impressive by reason of their proportions, and recalling the antique by their grandeur and power. In 1476 Bramante became the court architect of Lodovico Sforza (Il Moro), having been in Milan, as has been abundantly shown, from 1474. At first he seems to have been engaged principally as a painter, following the vigorous manner of Mantegna and Melozzo da Forlí. It is true that only scanty remains of his work at this time have been found. Such are the recently discovered fresco fragments, transported from the Casa Prinetti to the Brera (single figures of warriors, philosophers, poets, and singers); the more poorly preserved decorative paintings of the Casa Fontana, and among panel pictures undoubtedly the Scourging of Christ (Badia Chiaravalle near Milan). Bartolomeo Suardi, called Bramantino [cf. Suida in Jahrbuch der Kunstsammlungen des allerhöchsten...

...To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. Disagree Is it really possible to study main characteristics of a society without study of the cities that are part of that? Sociologist have a wide variety of technics that help them to find main features of a society such as study major cities, study works of literature and study monuments. There can be no doubt that study major cities of a society can make a significant help to understand that society. In my view, study major cities is not necessary for discover important characters of a society. First and foremost reason why study major cites does not make help is that a territories if a society my be spread among many countries and sometimes many continents. For instance, Western society is spread between North America and Europe therefore study a city such as New York City and Paris not help us but also distract sociologist. For example in New York City people always in hurry and usually eat fast foods on the other hand in Paris people pay more attention to their mealtime so eat their food in peace and some times take more than an hour to eat their main course. Thus who only studies these two cities cannot understand whether people in Western society have their meal in a hurry or peace. A second instance in which study a major city is not necessary is that it takes long time for a society to form, so study a city only shows the contemporary situation of that city.......

...“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”- Coco Chanel This Chanel quotes emphasizes how fashion can be seen in all different parts of life. Since I was little, I always loved fashion. I would be dressing up in my mom’s clothes and high heels at age four. I want fashion to be in my life forever. Fashion merchandising is what I desire to be my career. My experiences that made me love fashion were working in a retail store and visiting Paris, France. I currently work at Ugg Outlet. Even though this is a shoe store, I have learned and seen so much fashion. The store I work at is the central hub for everyone to go shopping at. You see so many people where all different styles. A lot of Europeans come in and they have a lot different style, which I respect and like a lot. They wear different patterns that you do not see Americans wearing. The Asians have their own funky style, which they created. Working in retail made me see how much I love the business aspect and I want to create my own fashion business one day. My most significant event was going on my school trip my junior year to France. This was the best trip I ever been on. I saw how Paris is very fashionable like New York City but they have a different fashion sense over there. They are more up to date with their fashion. Very modern and stylist look is what they sport in Paris. I saw how people......

Leonardo Da Vinci: the Greatest Inventor of the Renaissance

...Leonardo Da Vinci: Greatest Inventor of the Renaissance What do you think of when someone mentions the name Leonardo da Vinci? Most people automatically think of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Not many people go right to the fact that he was the original inventor of the airplane and tank. Not only did he invent these, but da Vinci invented many military machines that people overlook today. The Renaissance housed some of the greatest minds and talents the world has even seen, including Leonardo da Vinci. He has been called by many people the original “renaissance man” for his advancements in anatomy, art, physics, and military technology. He was an all around genius and scholar in all fields of study. Unfortunately many of his inventions were ahead of their time, and were left in many of his notebooks and sketches for future scientists to make advancements upon. Many of his ideas did not work because Leonardo lacked the resources and information, due to his era and the scarcity of technology, to make them work. The notebooks that he left behind give a glimpse into one of the most creative minds in history. Even though many of his inventions did not work because they were too far ahead of their time, Leonardo da Vinci should be considered one of the greatest inventors of the Italian Renaissance because he was the most sought after technician and engineer in Italy of the time, and he revolutionized military technology for the generations to follow. Leonardo was born in a...
