Military vs. Civilian Organizational Behavior Organizational behavior (OB) is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structures have on behavior within an organization. It is an interdisciplinary field that includes sociology, psychology, communication, and management; and it complements the academic studies of organizational theory and human resource studies (wikipedia.com). The primary focus of OB is that of people, what they do and how their behavior affects individual, group and organizational performance. Studying about such topics as organizational behavior will help develop a better work-related understanding about individuals and how their actions affect other people and themselves as it applies to their environment. “People are the organization’s most important assets”(Shermerhorn, Jr. 2005) these words have resonated through many different agencies over the years and they still hold true today. Organizations should take it seriously if they choose to apply or quote these words. Organizations both military and civilian must learn to value their employees so that when the time comes, employees will do the same for the organization. The military uses a unique organizational behavior, which is, governed by a set of rules and regulations the Uniform Code of Military Justice as well as many more. This gives the military branches the authority to imprison or apply their own variation of punishment on an employee for disobeying military orders. This applies to the smallest military order such as no racial comments or be as complicated as keeping a secret from everyone including your own family. On the civilian side it is as simple as just firing an employee without any legal ramifications. Of course, this varies from

Managers who are led to expect more of their subordinates lead them to greater achievement. Programmatic research findings from field experiments are reviewed, and our present knowledge about the Pygmalion effect in the management of industrial, sales, and military organizations is summarized. A model is presented in which leadership is hypothesized to be the key mediator through which manager expectations influence motivation, effort, and performance. The subordinate self-efficacy, performance expectations, behaviors that comprise the Pygmalion Leadership Style are described. Besides creating the one-onone Pygmalion effect, additional ways for managers to assert their leadership by creating productive organizationwide SFP are suggested.
