HELP MILLER HIGH-LIFE SAVE AMERICA’S EAGLES (1986)
English 112 – Composition
Due 7/23/12

What do Freedom, Liberty and Independence mean to Americans? That’s all the bald eagle represents for the United States, as it was accepted as the National Bird in 1782. In 1986, Miller High-Life used the bald eagle in an ad; an ad that displays an eagle soaring through the sky freely. There’s an article on the ad stating, “Our national symbol faces extinction and to look for Miller High-Life products at our favorite retail store during the Fourth of July holiday and find out to help Miller keep our magnificent eagles soaring forever.” Miller High-Life products also stand over their slogan which reads “Made the American Way”. With patriotism in mind, the ad uses Ethos, Pathos and Logos to reach out to the American public and together they can save the eagles. The author clearly displays ethos in the ad “Help Miller High-Life Save America’s Eagles” by the authority eagles have in the sky. Being that eagles really don’t have any predators other than man, we can save their species by coming together. Credibility is displayed in the ad because the bald eagle represents the United States as the national symbol. Using the products slogan “Made the American Way” and “Our National Symbol Faces Extinction” emphasizes the authority and credibility America portrays. Pathos is clearly displayed by informing the American public that the national symbol faces extinction. Hoping to get some type of proactive reaction from the public is what the Miller Company is aiming for if the nation’s image means anything. Pathos also shows when Miller suggests to the public to look for their product on the nation’s Independence Day, the most celebrated day of the year. If we, the public in general, don’t save our national symbol we pretty much lose everything we stand for, showing that we no longer are what we once were. Being the proud American’s that we are the ad lets the public know how we can and will save our image. “Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery.” – Wayne Dyer. What better day to something about saving the eagles, than on the day of this country’s Independence Day. By having the product’s emblem and slogan the ad clearly uses logos. The bald eagle on the product’s emblem and products over the slogan, “Made the American Way”, clearly states this is a product for the American people. With the soaring bald eagle in danger of extinction, shows that our nation’s image is at risk and is worth saving. The “Help Miller High-Life Save America’s Eagles” is a strong ad. By using ethos, pathos and logos the author makes the reader aware of a possible national crisis and if we, Americans, would like to continue to enjoy freedom, liberty and independence consuming this product is the way to go.

...ENCOUNTERING SOCIAL CLASS DIFFERENCES AT WORK: HOW “CLASS WORK” PERPETUATES INEQUALITY Using a microsociological lens, we develop a theoretical framework that explains how social class distinctions are sustained within organizations. In particular, we intro- duce the concept of “class work” and explicate the cognitions and practices that members of different classes engage in when they come in contact with each other in cross-class encounters. We also elucidate how class work perpetuates inequality, as well as the consequences of class work on organizations and those at the lower end of the organizational hierarchy. By examining microlevel interactions and how they become institutionalized within organizations as prevailing rules and practices, we contribute to both institutional theory and the sociology of social class differences. We encourage future research on social class and discuss some of the challenges inher- ent in conducting it. Several contemporary developments—includ- ing the financial crisis of 2008 (Rajan, 2010), the shrinking of the middle class (Leicht & Fitzger- ald, 2007), and the rise of the “new poor” in America (Cohen, 2010)— have reinjected the is- sue of social class differences and inequality (Stiglitz, 2012) into contemporary discourse.
