I always try to leave people better than I find them. It sounds simple, but I truly value working hard, serving others and building friendships. These values come from my Catholic faith and family tradition. In this essay I will help you see who I am in light of these values, without creating a false impression of myself. In order to give you the clearest picture, I will describe my personal growth over the past year through three different facets of my life: Mind, Body, and Spirit.
Mind: I have always had a creative mind and the ability to see the world differently. This helps me to make people laugh, build friendships, as well as solve problems in school. For example, during a recent Physics project, I was able to build the tallest tower in class using only an 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper and a 6” piece of masking tape. I may not be the smartest kid in the class, but sometimes I can see solutions to problems that others cannot.
However, my creativity and free-thinking have not always been assets. From the time I was very young, focus has been a problem for me. Whenever I take a test I often find myself looking around the classroom at my peers rather than focusing on the test in front of me. I have quietly struggled with this my entire life. Last spring, I mentioned this to my parents and they took me to a specialist.
In May, I was diagnosed with mild ADD for which I am now being treated and have already seen results. For example, the first time I took the ACT (prior to treatment) I scored an 18. But encouragingly, on my second test (after taking medicine), I scored a 29. This treatment, as well as my determination to persevere, makes me excited about my future academic potential.
Body: In 2010, my brother Teddy transformed himself through diet and exercise. After seeing him lose 70 pounds, it inspired me to work on my overall fitness. I have made nutritional changes and began strength training which has improved my athletic performance in varsity soccer and lacrosse. More importantly, I am more confident. This confidence has motivated me to shadow at a physical therapy clinic to see how professional therapists treat patients. The knowledge and experience I have gained through this has enabled me to help others. For example, my friends now ask me to show them how to work out. I really love inspiring others like my brother inspired me.
Spirit: This has been a year of profound spiritual growth for me as well. The most significant experience was my school mission trip to Nicaragua this past spring. During this trip, I had many spiritual moments. One such moment occurred when we visited a Catholic Nicaraguan high school. I was excited to be visiting with kids my own age. When we walked into their classroom, we sat in a circle, but on opposite sides of the room. From the beginning, they remained quiet and reserved. After a while, I stood up and suggested that we should alternate the seating; one Nicaraguan student and one American student.
With a little more encouragement, I got them to start talking about our two cultures and eventually play games and even dance. It was a memorable experience, but the most lasting impact came when one of the boys told me that they were originally quiet because they were skeptical of us. He explained Americans were stereotyped as selfish and arrogant.
The fact that I helped change his point of view by getting his classmates to open up made me realize what a great impact I had on my new friends. Through this, God revealed to me one reason why He put me on this Earth; He wants me to be a servant and use my talents and compassion for others.
That evening, after another long, scorching day in 100 degree heat, our mission group sat in a circle on the front patio to pray and reflect. My prayer that night was a prayer of thanks, love and determination; determination to use all the gifts of my mind, body and spirit to always leave people better than I find them. On that day, I did.

New Age Religion: the Body, Mind, Spirit Holistic Health and Modern Medicine

...New Age Religion: The Body, Mind, Spirit Holistic Health and Modern Medicine Just like the world has evolved through time in almost every aspect, religions have not stayed the same either, new religions have been created with their roots in old traditions. Different religions have been formed and established with this day and age. Some are science-related; some are traditional; other religion deviates from the norm; and some consist of combinations of traditional and new ideas. Example of this is the New Age movement. However, it is not a new religion it is considered old but became popular only in 1970s. It is a compilation of different practices, beliefs, teachings and religions that are being practiced by different ancient societies around the world. This religion treats the body, mind and soul as one entity and considered them interconnected. It promotes traditional medicine from different cultures, religions and beliefs found everywhere in the world. It can also be viewed as holistic healing of illnesses and diseases (Puttick 129). Russell Chandler described it as “A hybrid mix of spiritual, social, and political forces, and it encompasses sociology, theology, the physical sciences, medicine, anthropology, history, the Human Potential movement, sports and science fiction” (17). Although New Age main point is to be something relatively new, making it the third larges religious group, its roots are as old as the eastern religions of Hinduism and...

Equine Assisted Therapy

...Equine Assisted Therapy By: Ashley M. Lorenc An ancient Greek sage once said, "The outside of a horse is the best thing for the inside of man." Hippocrates echoed that sentiment when he spoke of "ride rhythm" (Bliss). I have found there is an unspoken magic that horses posses when it comes to healing human beings. This experience is something that could never be taught or reached in a “talk” therapy session. The primary objective of Equine Assisted Therapy at Helping Hands Therapeutic Riding Center is rehabilitation, but it is also there to provide mental, physical, and social stimulation. The children love coming out to ride. It is amazing seeing an unresponsive child get on a horse and 45 minutes later have a totally different personality. Some of the children are more challenging to work with than others. Their attention spans can be short so keeping them focused and entertained can be difficult. One patient we had was a girl about age 12. While on the horse she would talk in song, in a soft tone. She loved being on the horse. When the therapist would tell her left and right she would start to respond and move the reigns. Every child has their own personalities and their own needs. Each child is matched with a horse depending on those needs. This takes great patience for all the participants. Safety is essential. That is why I am there. I volunteer to walk next to the horse, to control the horse, and to monitor the rider through the lesson. The therapist...

A structured review evaluated pain reduction, feasibility, and safety. I used studies in Medline and PsycINFO to retrieve the data. 40 samples out of 120 include older adults with chronic illness aged between 60 to 75 years for one year follow up. I excluded samples of chronic nonmalignant pain. I selected twenty two and eighteen samples for men and women respectively. The outcome measures varied by the study, it took into consideration of depression scale, chronic pain acceptance questionnaire health, arthritis impact measurements, health-promoting...

Devitonal Classics

...Introduction Devotional Classics is a book which contains writings by a large selection of spiritual giants. It provides an amazing perspective of Christianity from a wide variety of demonstrations, walks of faith, vocations, and time periods which started from the early church fathers up to current writers. It is an excellent compilation of portions of mostly classic Christian works in devotional format. This devotional book offers a full and a complete overview of all sides of devotional life. It is a great companion to the Scriptures as it has biblical references and study questions as part of each reading. Each chapter gives me an excerpt and some thought provoking reflections by Foster and Smith. Most of the readings are profound and worthy of in-depth reading. It has made me think, contemplate and overall grow in my spiritual journey. In this paper, I will demonstrate why John Calvin is important to be studied in the 21st century. I have chosen his devotional writing as a reflection of my spiritual insights and its application to my spiritual journey. Why John Calvin Many theologians such as Augustine, Martin Luther, John Calvin and more throughout history have made a big impact on their culture, times, society, and/or religion. One of the theologians that stands out to me is John Calvin, who had a great influence during his time, the early to middle sixteenth century. Calvin is considered by many to have been the father and founder of the Presbyterian and...

...Differences of models of health and healing: Body-Mind-Spirit/Bio-psycho-social Model Religion and spirituality are components of any cultural system which is difficult to clearly separate culture form religion and spirituality as it is practiced in everyday life. For some it is like the air they breathe while others profess no real sense of religion or spirituality in their lives. Religious and spiritual beliefs are often part of concepts related to etiology, treatment and prevention of ill health. The relationship between spirituality, religion, healing, and healers was very close. It is like a process of reconciliation led by popular demand rather than by either the religious or medical fields. This model discuss about the relationship between spirituality, religion and health that has grown enormously over the last several decades, and has gain more interest among health and mental health professionals. Religion and spirituality can play a role in how an individual child or adult copes with being sick, may influence medical decisions that are made, and may have an impact on the medical outcome. The bio-psycho-social model of medicine, is a way of looking at the mind and body of a patient as two important systems that are interlinked and it is like a mind-body connection. This is in contrast to the traditional biomedical model of medicine. This model treats the biological, psychological and social issues as systems of the body, similar to the traditional medical systems...

Philosophy

...FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OYE-EKITI, EKITI STATE, NIGERIA. A TERM PAPER TITLE:- “THE ESSENCE/SUBSTANCE OF MAN” BY FACULTY: SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: MICROBIOLOGY COURSE TITLE: PHILOSOPHY AND LOGIC COURSE CODE: GST 205 CONTENT * Introduction * What is man * Philosophically * Scientifically * The essence and substance of man * What constitute man * Man as a dualist * Man as a monad * Man as a socialist * Man as a spiritual entity * Man as a physical entity * Intrinsic characteristics that man have in common * Illustration of the mental essence(when man is abnormal is he still half or full) INTRODUCTION The essence of man is the constituent of man which goes beyond his body alone but extends to his mind, soul, spirit and other attributes of man. But we cannot talk about the essence of man without the existence of man because without an existence of man, man’s essence is of no use and nothing to talk about. This brings about the proposition ‘existence precedes essence’. The proposition that existence precedes essence is a central claim of existentialism, which reverses the traditional philosophical view that the essence (the nature) of a thing is more fundamental and immutable than its existence (the mere fact of its being). To existentialists, human beings—through their consciousness—create their own values and determine a meaning for their life because the human being does not possess any inherent identity or value. By posing the acts that constitute...

Do Religion and Prayer Benefit Health?

...Body, Soul and Spirit One of the heated arguments of Christianity is: Are Human Beings composed of two elements or three? Are we body and spirit or are we body, spirit and soul (which includes our mind, will and emotions)? This argument has been going on for centuries. In our modern America, another theory has been formed. We are only made up of one element. We are just glorified animals. We have just evolved and become more advanced than the other animals. There is no such thing as an everlasting spirit. When we die, we cease to exist. This theory, of course, is only accepted by a very few. Those who believe this theory believe that they are so elite, so intelligent, that they are the highest creature that could ever exist. Thus, there is no such thing as a god or eternal spirit that could exist. With very, very few exceptions, all people and all religions believe that we have an eternal spirit that lives on after we die. We believe this, because it is built into us. Our spirit is a part of who we are. It is the part of us that reaches out to God. Even if we don’t know who God is, we know that there is something out there that is calling to us. God Created Us The Bible teaches us exactly how God created human beings. Genesis 2:7 (NIV) says: “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” The King James Version says that he became a Living Soul. The word translated “soul” (in...

The Christain Life

...putting to death the corrupted deeds of the body by the Spirit and the renewing of the believer’s mind to discern the things of God characterizes the Christian life, according to Paul’s teaching depicted in Romans 8:13 and 12:2. A Christian must continually put to the death sin, by the work of the Holy Spirit, which originates within their hearts and within their bodies, that is the expression of the sin within the heart. Christians are set apart for God’s use and according to Romans 8:29, God conforms believers to the image of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The life of every Christian is a continual renewal or development to the likeness of Christ, who is the perfect image of man. Romans 8 depicts a transformation of a life dominated by the flesh to a life led by the Spirit of God. A Christian’s mindset is reshaped by the Spirit and is focused on to the things of God and not on the world. The motive for Christian living is intellectual in which it begins with the mind. What a Christian has been already made in Christ is now what they are called to do. Ultimately, the end result of the Christian life is to bring glory to God. Thus God is glorified when man response to Him by placing his trust in Jesus Christ and turns from a lifestyle of sin, which is characterized by obedience and devotion to Him. Corrupted Deeds “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” An essential part to understanding...

Evangelism

...nothing to do with your car insurance. (Maybe a little to do with your fire insurance) Once you are biblically born again your eternal destination is sealed! You’re bound for Heaven and you're sure to get there! Which brings us to the all-important question; "So, I'm Born Again... NOW WHAT???" Well, here's the answer, the first thing we must understand is: Salvation Comes in Threes. There are three levels to salvation, each affecting a different part of your being at a different time in a different way. The Three Levels of Salvation are: (1) The Regeneration of the Spirit (2) The Restoration of the Soul (3) The Transfiguration of the Body In strictly biblical terms we call them: (1) Justification (2) Sanctification (3) Glorification 1st Corinthians 6:11 says, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” Romans 8:30 says, “Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” (Bold Type and Italics Mine) The Three-Phased Process of Salvation goes like this: When you believe the Gospel,...

Angels

...we will be doing is to dwell more on the deep things in the spirit but on the experiential side. It is something that you find it hard to define but we will attempt to do so. The majority of the people do not know what it is like to really be in the depths of the spirit. If we have an idea of what the spirit realm is like it is possible to get motivated by it. So our purpose is to share some experiences from the spirit realm that could make you desire to spend more time with God in order to want to move into that realm. II Cor. 12:1-4 I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven - whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise - whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows - and he heard things that that cannot be told, which man may not utter. Now Paul was educated and he would not be short of words as far as the average man is concerned. So you could imagine the impact of what he is saying. This is not an ordinary man who lacks the vocabulary. Paul was brought up at Gamaliel's feet. He is one of the most highly educated people in his days. And for him to make a statement that he has been in the spirit realm, and that when he came back he could not describe what it was like, imagine the impact of that. It was just like a Noble prize...

What Does It Mean To Be Made In The Image Of God

...Holy Spirit, so we are three in one, spirit, soul, and body. In first Thessalonians 5:23, scripture reads, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless…” There are many ways to look at this. For example, the soul can thought of as being sandwiched between two realms. To explain, a physical body on one side that interacts with the physical reality of the natural universe and a spiritual body on the other side that interacts with the supernatural or spiritual universe. The supernatural is something that supersedes the natural (Trimm, 2014). Another way to view our make- up is a series of concentric circles, with the spirit being the most part and our body as the outer layer. Though this gives an illusion that the inner world of the spirit is perceived to be smaller than the outer work d of the body, this is not true. Allegory: The soul, like a scientist thinks of a wormhole in space that exists between two universes; one being the physical realm, the other being the spiritual. In physics, the wormhole is the communication conduit between the two realms, while also having a personality and traits or characteristics of its own (Trimm, 2014). The soul is made up of another three elements: mind, will, and emotions. These are somewhat broken out in the first of the great commandments. Mark 12:30 states, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with...

Viktor Frankl

...with of mind, body, and spirit. Frankl's theories were established after surviving the Holocaust, believing that “those who had a sense of meaning and purpose kept their humanity even in this unbelievable suffering" (Morrison, 21). Even after living throughout something so indecent, Frankl kept the faith and made himself a great person to humanity for many years to come. I identify with Frankl the most out of the reading because many of the things he believes about humans, I believe the same as well. Everyone has a purpose in life and has a reason for living. Frankl has said plenty of times that everyone has a meaning to their life. I agree with this concept completely. I feel that everyone just has to find their inner self and they will find their purpose in life. Frankl’s ideas can be brought into healthcare. As healthcare providers we should not just treat as a regular patient, but be able to treat a patient as a whole, looking into their mind, body and spirit. When you work in healthcare, you have many patients that have lots of bad experiences throughout their lifetime. Being able to treat patients the right way will allow them to experience a whole new way of looking at healthcare, and they will have a better experience overall. Looking at the mind body and spirit is a holistic way of looking at things. Holistic health is a concept of healthcare delivery in which a person's psychological, physical, and social health are all taken into account. The mind, body, and spirit...
