An assessment on Employee satisfaction, Retention and Turnover within fast-food industry: Case Study “Burger King”
Introduction
Employee satisfaction increases level of performance in most workplaces including these in fast-food industry. High Staff Turnover is the effect as a result of less employee satisfaction as indicated by most studies. It is obvious that the employee turnover is at its highest ever within fast-food sector due to poor pay, poor working conditions, no job autonomy etc. Studies also show that almost half of these working in fast-food industry are not happy or dissatisfied with their work. There is even a new term called ‘McJob’ which reflects these types of jobs around the world because of poor pay and working conditions, no career opportunities and unsocial working hours.
While Ireland is moving towards a Knowledge Economy these low skilled sorts of jobs become unfavorable. In same time these jobs account for nearly 20% of the workforce as the consumption of fast-food is increasing every day. Most surveys and studies show that the employee turnover is as high as 100% in Ireland within fast-food industry, also called “100% turnover industries” (Economist, 2000). These figures have lowered in the last number of years because of non-national and eastern European workforce influence on the labor market.
Reason for the proposed study
There are several studies that have been conducted in relation to these issues around the world but very few in Ireland. If conducted this research might find out why these employees are not happy with their work, what are factors that makes the workplace dissatisfying and are there ways to improve this.
Research questions * What factors impact the job satisfaction of employees within the fast-food industry? Is it pay, autonomy or is it the unsocial hours? * What are the main reasons for the high staff turnover?
Research Objectives
• To establish factors impacting the job satisfaction of employee within the fast food industry,
• To establish the relevance of job satisfaction in the management of employees in the fast food outlets,
• To find ways of improving the workplace conditions
Literature Review
The literature review will be discussed under these headings and once the research is conducted findings from the research will be tested on theories for validity (Saunders, M. et al 1997). * Employee and Job satisfaction; * Staff turnover; * Retention * Motivation theories Herzberg; Two Factor theories Maslow; Hierarch of needs theory * Pay and Benefits;

Research Methodology
Design
The methods for this research will be a combination of quantitative and qualitative which also refers to triangulation.
Quantitative
Part of the study will be conducted using quantitative methods; data will be collected from respondents by using set of questionnaires and this data will be analyzed with the help of SPSS.
Qualitative
Qualitative methods will also be used during the research. This will help the researcher to get more and deeper information about the respondents. Questions such as * What in your opinion can be done to improve working conditions

Population
The subject of this study would be those individuals working in Burger King Outlet including waitresses, cooks, managers, supervisors etc.
Privacy and Consents
Consents will be obtained prior to commencement of research both from the organizations and the individuals. Before the distribution of questionnaire a letter will be delivered to all employees explaining the purpose of the research, and how the information is to be used. The letter will contain contact number of the researcher, and give a guarantee of anonymity of the information.

...About a week ago after driving my Mini Cooper for a short distance the EML light in the car would come on and the car would hesitate. The car then would loose pressure dropping the speed from normal speed limit to no more than 5 – 10 mph. After parking the car, I noticed that the fan would come on and remain on for an extended period. When I lifted the hood of the car, I noticed that the coolant supply would be low. Replacing the coolant supply did not seem to fix the problem. I attempted to figure out the problem with an experiment. I drove the same speed around the block multiple times. The third or fourth time I noticed a difference. When I drove the car approximately a mile, the temperature gage would increase activating the EML. Then the car would hesitate, loose pressure, and decrease in mph. It seemed to be a direct correlation with an increase in temperature, the EML light coming on, losing pressure, and the decrease in mph. So to make sure there were not any confounding variables, I drove the car slowly to ensure speed was not a factor. Decreasing the speed did not change anything. I was able to make the same observation. I took the car to the auto repair shop. The repair person informed me that there was a leak in the coolant system. The leak caused an increase in the cars temperature. The increase in the cars temperature activated the EML light. The car would loose pressure.
