Although the terms “minimum wage” and “living wage” are used interchangeably, there is a significant difference between these two. Minimum wage is usually determined by the government, while a living wage is the amount required to live a safe and decent life with access to basic amenities including education, recreation and saving for retirement. There are many possibilities that minimum wage falls below the living wage for its failure to fulfill the basic needs. Therefore, a living wage is a far more realistic yardstick of minimum income than the minimum wage.
Although living wage is a better and realistic than minimum wage, it is difficult to have auniform minimum wage reflecting the living wage accurately. Living wage varies from state

Minimum Wage

...arguments for and against raising the minimum wage are almost unavoidable in the labor market, with each side having individually strong points. Advocates say that anyone who works 40 hours a week or more deserves to earn a decent living wage and get out of poverty, while opponents argue that high wages cost jobs. Most of the arguments for increasing the minimum wage are more emotional pleas and theories with very little evidence for achieving the desired outcome. The truth is that raising the minimum wage does not lead people to get out of poverty, but what it does is make it more difficult for younger workers to find entry-level jobs to build their skills. By raising the minimum wage, experts argue that it will make it more difficult for younger workers entering the workforce to get a job. Employers will be hiring workers with more experience and skills, since they can attract these workers with higher wages. Therefore, raising the minimum wage may be causing more harm to a younger workforce looking to find their first job to gain relevant work experience. Our country needs to focus on the inconvenient truths about the real impact around raising the minimum wage. Some of these inconvenient truths are highlighted by the research that clearly shows how raising the minimum wage may cause more harm than good, and have significant consequences to the younger and entry-level workers vs. the emotional theories that state increasing the minimum wage will get more people out of poverty...

Middle Class America Feeling the Economic Squeeze

...Middle Class America is Feeling the Pressures of Economic Distress Larry S. Jordan Excelsior College Do you remember a time when gasoline was under $2.00 per gallon? I do and it was 2008 when it last occurred. Middle Class America is feeling the pressure of the recession. Economic growth has slowed down over the last decade and is improving only slightly in the last four years. In a time when the commodity prices are rising, and the cost of living is increasing, the one constant that stays the same is that the middle class income is not rising as fast as inflation. Middle Class America is diminishing with the rising costs of healthcare, stagnant wages vs. inflation, and the rise of unemployment. The rising costs of healthcare have escalated over the last 10 years significantly. Davidson (2014) reported that the fourth quarter last year was the fastest pace in health care spending in the last 10 years. The total spending on healthcare is expected to reach over 4 trillion dollars by the year 2021, according to Aetna Insurance. The reason this effects the middle class is that employers are requiring the employee to share in a larger portion of the insurance premiums, this is a change that is becoming popular with most companies. Collins (2008) reported that the proportion of adults spending 10% or more on their healthcare have more than doubled between 2001 and 2007, from 18 percent to 36 percent. One of the core beliefs is that the middle class income is not keeping up with...

Why Are Foreign Wages so Low?

...Mark Taliercio Professor Skyers 5/10/12 QU301 Why are foreign wages so low? The world is a place populated with a diverse range of individuals. Due to differing backgrounds, individuals tend to have different opinions and different viewpoints towards certain situations. As a citizen of the United States, I have been raised in a society that professes equal freedoms for everyone in the world despite race, religion, gender or any other distinct differences. I feel that no matter where you are born, you are subject to protection under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is the mission of the leaders of a country to ensure to their best ability that everyone is protected under these rights, and that no one is discriminated against. An article that I feel most countries in our global community do not abide by is Article 23. A portion of this article states “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment. Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.” (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 2008) In America, for the most part, we see very fair employment conditions and treatment, with specific legislation enacted that protects against discrimination or unlawful termination. As citizens of a global community it is our obligation to respect the freedoms that everyone has the right to. Without equal participation in this community it ceases...

Living Wage

...THE LIVING WAGE AND ITS EFFECT ON THE ECONOMY   INTRODUCTION The topic of our study investigates the living wage and its effect on the economy. A survey will be distributed asking questions about wages, cost of living, and making ends meet. Our conclusions and recommendations on the topic of living wages will result from this survey. BACKGROUND The definition of living wage is “a term used to describe the minimum hourly wage necessary for a person to achieve some specific standard of living. This means a person working forty hours a week, ”should be able to afford housing, food, utilities, transportation, health care and recreation” at a basic level. (Wikipedia.org). Currently, a living wage is set by local municipalities based on a local cost of living assessment, and applies only to government employees and/or contractors. This is different from minimum wage, which is set by law through the Federal government. The federal minimum wage is the minimum amount that a worker can be paid an hour and this law applies to nearly all workers. In Michigan, the minimum wage is currently $7.40 an hour. Minimum wage does not always meet the requirements of a living wage. (Wikipedia.org). For example, in 2008, East Pointe, MI paid its employees a living wage of $10.40/hr , while Detroit, MI paid its employees and contractors $8.25/hr, both with health benefits in comparison to $7.40/hr Federal minimum wage.(laborstudies.wayne.edu/ According to the Economic Policy Institute...

Hrm Business Law

...the biggest issues that are going on today is should we raise the minimum wage? According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, “In 2011, 73.9 million American workers age 16 and over were paid at hourly rates, representing 59.1 percent of all wage and salary workers. Among those paid by the hour, 1.7 million earned exactly the prevailing Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. About 2.2 million had wages below the minimum. Together, these 3.8 million workers with wages at or below the Federal minimum made up 5.2 percent of all hourly-paid workers” (Characteristics of Minimum Wage Workers In 2011, 2012). According to the data, there are very few people getting paid at or below the federal minimum wage. Yet, people are complaining that the current wages are not enough. With wages at the current state, people are still living in poverty. With the new Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2015 (H.R. 1010), the minimum wage will rise from $7.25 to $10.10. The debate is whether the increase in wage will either benefit everyone (employees and businesses) or will this increase have negative effects and create more issues instead of fixing them. Will we end up paying more to get less? Background Here is some history on H.R. 1010 or better known as the Fair Minimum Wage Act. “The federal minimum wage originated in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) signed by President Franklin Roosevelt on June 25, 1938. The law established a minimum wage of 25 cents per hour for all employees who produced products shipped...

Advantage & Disadvantages of Minimum Wage

...Introduction Minimum wage refers to the lowest hourly, daily or monthly wage an employee is legally entitled to when working. Minimum wage is in effect in a range of different jurisdictions with differences in the views on the advantages and disadvantages being disputed by people. Supporters claim minimum wage increases the standard of living for workers whilst reducing poverty. Opposite views are that if it is high enough to be effective then it increases unemployment, particularly among workers who are inexperienced or handicap, thus harming the lesser skilled workers to benefit the better skilled workers The effect on employment rates due to minimum wage rates is a highly contested policy within economics. The introduction of minimum wage into the market can lead to competitive employers cutting employment; this depends on the rate of the wage rises require to comply with the current minimum wage according to the “standard textbook model”. Other models have also been suggested in which a decline in the employment rate may not occur and in fact employment may increase. During my research I found a wide range of literature on minimum wages, particularly on the effects of a minimum wage policy in place. Though a lot of informative research was concluding I also found the argument between weather the effects and positive of negative on employment, both sides of the disagreement present a large amount of information supporting the theories. Research before the 1990’s mostly...

...The rural women migrate to the city to work because these young women want to earn some income, try to fight against their typical destiny ( get marry and be a house wife in their young age) , find an opportunity for self development and to experience the metropolitan life. However, these young women have underestimated the hardships of living in the city such as Beijing. There are many disadvantages according to the article that these young women encountered while migrated to Beijing such as labor exploitation from a local employer( pay less than the standard wage, work in a sweat shop and long hour), gender discrimination, and sexual violence. Rural women are the target of the labor exploitation because they are lack of capital resources to be independent on their own, lack of education, and the traditional patriarchal society. Some other major disadvantages that these rural women are facing are the risk of losing their jobs anytime after they pass twenty five year old and being deported by local authority( due to the big volume of migrant workers in the city and a the unwillingness of a local owner to employ an employer who passes twenty five). There is no doubt that rural Chinese Women have more freedom in making their own decisions compared to the past, but the question is at what cost does this come? It is hard to believe that women nowadays have given the full legal protections but still have to pay a high price to prove their abilities. Their contributions are being...

...Explaining Unemployment: An Analysis on State Unemployment Rates Rachel Schlesselman Creighton University Introduction and Research Question Mississippi has 48,434 square miles of land. The state flower is the magnolia. Hawaii has only 6, 423 square miles of land and the yellow hibiscus as the state flower. These states are very different in many aspects; their populations, products, and geography are all very different. States are very unique and while national averages can give a general understanding of these separate entities, how are we to be sure it is an accurate account. The national average for unemployment in August of 2006 was at 4.7 percent. This does not adequately represent the unemployment rates for Mississippi or Hawaii. Mississippi had the highest unemployment rate of all states at 7.1 percent. Hawaii on the other hand, had the lowest at 2.8 percent. If the national average does not accurately represent the unemployment rates of these states, is it not then important for us to look at those state rates and determine our own cause for the differences? It is because of this I ask the question, how do we explain the variation of unemployment rates among the individual states? It is important to clarify exactly what the question is asking and the unit of analysis that is going to be tested. According to the Bureau of Labor, unemployment is defined as “persons who did not work or have a job during the reference period, were actively looking for work during the...

Expectations of Foreign Investors in Terms of Labor Laws

...Human Resource Management Project Report on Expectations of Foreign Investors in terms of Labor Laws India, like other countries worldwide, is experiencing the effects of globalization. In order to make conditions friendlier for investors, there is a need for adaptability. Labor legislation, such as the Indian Disputes Act and Contract Labor (Regulation and Abolition) Act, are now under debate, along with issues concerning special economic zones. Submitted by: Introduction There has been a steady expansion of foreign investment in recent decades. The upward trend is particularly strong for less developed countries, signifying the increased importance for these countries of FDI, as well as the increased presence of multinational firms. Alongside the expansion of FDI have risen concerns regarding competition between countries or regions to attract FDI. After adopting new economic policy by government of India in July 1991 many foreign investors came in the Indian economic scene because the government of India gave many incentives to the foreign investors. So it is clear that government opened the doors of Indian market to foreign investors. With more companies operating internationally, the impact on various business functions and labour laws in India is becoming more pronounced. Globalization...

Bernie Sanders: Who Should Be Our Next President

...to reform Wall Street by helping America’s banking system become a productive, job creating economy. Sanders explained that doing this would be possible by “eliminating its internal conflicts of interest, providing stricter oversight, and help banks serve the economy in a way that works for everyone, not just a small few” (https://berniesanders.com/issues/reforming-wall-street). Another way Sanders will help the working class is by raise the federal minimum wages from $7.25 an hour to $15.00 an hour throughout the country by 2020. He also wants to raise the tipped minimum wage for waiters and waitresses from $2.13 an hour to $15 an hour as well. Adults with families and responsibilities, such as taxes, rent, or any other bills they may need to pay, deserve a the chance to live a healthy and happy life, and $7.25 an hour is not doing anything to help them.
