Introduction
The data set that we chose is based on statistics from the 2010 NFL season. We wanted to figure out if there was a trend between height and receiving statistics. The variables that we chose were: position, receptions, receiving yards, and if the player was greater than 6’ tall. We chose to make height a qualitative variable to fulfill the requirement of a binomial variable rather than a quantitative variable. To fulfill the requirement of a multinomial qualitative variable we chose the position of the player. Positions that make receptions in football are: tight ends (TE), wide receivers (WR), and running backs (RB). We collected the data from the NFL’s official website, www.NFL.com. On the website you can access statistics from many different categories and seasons. By accessing receiving statistics of the 2010 season we could utilize different variables to create our data set. We selected 30 random players. Initially we made the assumption that taller players would statistically be better than shorter players. We figured that a taller offensive player would make an easier target for the quarterback and be able to outreach defenders for the ball. After analyzing our data set, surprisingly we found that players 6’ and under had a higher mean in receptions and in receiving yards. We also found that players 6’ and under had nearly double the standard deviation in both receptions and receiving yards. Another interesting fact that we found is that all the tight ends in our sample were over 6’. We concluded that height does not necessarily give an offensive player an advantage when it comes to receiving; however a bigger sample may be needed to make such a statement.
