My Sociological Perspective of an article by Horace Miner entitled Body Ritual of Nacirema by Lynn Byrne Horace Miner depicts a group of people from Nacirema, but is actually referring to Americans, whose cultural beliefs (totality of learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects, and behavior) are rooted in the perspective that the body is prone to sickness, degradation, and dis figuration. Miner states that Naciremians spend a substantial part of their lives on magic based rituals and actions to improve the condition of their body. Miner went into great detail when he wrote up his findings. His detail let me look at my life, as an American, in a different perspective. Miner used cultural relativism and qualitative research methodology to explain why the Naciremain culture uses magic to maintain their physical conditioning and why magic is prevalent in their lives. Cultural relativism (the viewing of people's behavior from the perspective of their own culture) and use of qualitative research methodology (research that relies on what is seen in the field or naturalistic settings more than on statistical date) are prevalent throughout this article as Miner used ethnography (the study of an entire social setting through extended systematic fieldwork) and observation (a research technique in which an investigator collects information through direct participation by closely watching a group or community) to give us a deception of how the culture of Nacirema view the human body and use magic to maintain it. Because Miner immersed himself in this culture he was able to observe the rituals and hear first hand accounts of these rituals from the natives. Miner established rapport with them and that rapport served as a gateway into the homes of the people of Nacirema. He was able to observe the differences in status amongst the tribe, how

Explaining the Significance of Walk-Up Music at Minor League Baseball Games

...Abstract This research explores the challenge of rating fan satisfaction based on the affects of walk up music used during triple-A minor league baseball games. Minor league baseball has always been associated with family entertainment, and game enhancements, such as walk-up music for players, have been utilized to increase overall fan satisfaction. Walk-up music is a short clip of music that is played as a player approaches the batter’s box or the pitcher’s mound. 30 triple-A minor league teams were contacted and were questioned about their policies regarding their use of walk-up music during games. Using qualitative collection methods, this research primarily focuses on the reasoning behind front office decisions to allow players to select their own walk-up music that will utilized during home games. Information gained through a survey that was conducted during the interviews of 30 triple-A minor league baseball teams will add useful insight to future investigations that are focused on the affects of walk-up music at the minor league baseball level as well other levels of competition. Though trying to rule out extraneous variables that may affect fan satisfaction will be difficult, the investigators believe that the information gained will be beneficial to future researchers, and will hopefully be a foundation to more extensive research on the affects of music in correlation to fan satisfaction. Introduction One of the most important advances in consumer research is...

...Juvenile Delinquency Chapter Two - Assignment Three Scenario A Question1 The situation that Shatiek finds himself in is a sad and unfortunate one. However, as a juvenile judge I would treat him as a minor. Having considered all the available evidence and information, it is clear that the young man has been influenced by the society. Crime and drugs are all he knows about. The young man has never had the opportunity in his short life to try and be anybody else other than that. The courts should provide the young man with this opportunity. I would place him in a youth facility for a prolonged stay to help him. Question 2 A 16-year-old like Shatiek may or may not deserve a second chance. It is determined by the evidence and information adduced in court concerning the particular young 16 old. Question 3 Shatieks's behavior is very much common among adolescent boys especially in the low-end areas and estates. Should the Minimum Age of Responsibility Be Raised

...Should the minimum age of criminal responsibility be raised? ‘Boys will be boys’, but at what age does this no longer apply? At what age is a boy expected to take on the responsibilities of a man? The Children and Young Persons Act 1963 (s.16) provides that ‘It shall be conclusively presumed that no child under the age of ten years can be guilty of an offence’. This means that once a child in the UK reaches the age of ten they are as exposed and liable to the full weight of the law the same as any adult. The UK currently has the lowest minimum age of criminal responsibility (except Scotland at 8 but cannot be prosecuted until 12) within the European Union. This places the UK significantly below the average of 14 years old. There seems to be little justification for this deviance from the norm in regards to the minimum age of responsibility in the UK and there have been considerable publications pushing for the UK to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility in the last decade, providing substantial evidence in favour of doing so. The evidence supporting the need to raise this minimum age can be found not only in psychology and scientific research regarding the brain development of youth and autonomy of children at this age, but also the severe social implications of criminalizing our youth. In order to argue that the minimum age of criminal responsibility (MACR) should be raised it will be necessary to identify and evaluate this evidence, as well as identifying...

Minor Assignment

...Historically, print news has focused on the importance of text and where images have been used, little attention is given to the function of these images in conveying news discourse. However, the relationship between the verbal and the visual deserves further attention. Images have a powerful impact on a viewer’s response towards news and this impact cannot be created by text alone. A critical examination of three recent news events (see appendix) and analysis of the images that they utilise, reveals the communicative functions and the connotative force that is carried in news photography (Bednarek and Caple 2012, pg. 57). By studying these photographs through analytical frameworks, we see that images embody much more than what is depicted within a frame and in fact they “have been worked on, chosen, composed, constructed and treated according to professional, aesthetic and ideological norms” for the purpose of engaging with their audiences (Bednarek and Caple 2012, pg. 57). Prior to our analysis of the three articles, an overview of the analytical frameworks that will be used and their contribution to our understanding of news reporting must be investigated. News articles embody two different semiotic systems, language and image, which share an intersemiotic relationship (Bednarek and Caple 2012, pg. 121). Research of this relationship focuses on the textual strategies deployed in the newsroom to elicit responses from the audience, the words help drive the pictures while the...

Owens & Minor

...Owens & Minor along with other distributors provide inventory storage and management services for hospitals and other healthcare providers. Manufacturers typically don’t want the responsibility of holding inventory and prefer to ship product as soon as its finished. The role of distributor has changed over time and they are now doing more for the customers. At one point distributors were just responsible for a small percentage markup to deliver product infrequently to the hospital docks. What are the services rendered by the distributor to manufacturers and hospitals? Distributors like Owens & Minor provide hospitals with the purchasing of materials, along with its warehousing as well as product returns. They also offer additional services such as managing JIT and stockless inventory programs for hospitals. Its typical for a distributor to also manage the product from the manufactures delivery to the hospital’s dock. This service is much better positioned with a distributor as they have the systems and visibility to manage this process and it’s a byproduct of their own service to their customers. O&M also tracks and verifies customer contracted purchases at contracted prices and volumes. They also monitor agreements between end users and manufacturers. O&M is also adding warehousing and transportation services for their customers. They handle receiving, put-away, tracking, order management and shipping for their customers while carrying the...

Chilean Minors

...On a fall morning, 33 miners left for work, kissing their loved ones good-bye, not thinking that would be the last time they would see them for over two months. That afternoon the earth gave way crumbling on top of the miners, destroying any ventilation they depended on, not to see any signs of hope for anyone until 17 days later when a drill hit an opening allowing the rescuers to tie notes advising they were all fine. A plan immediately went into effect to rescue the miners. Given the situation there are many types of roles and people to consider. Thinking about the family is first and foremost. There will be many lives that will be affected when addressing the families of the victims. Who will tell the family, how, making sure the tone of voice is proper and who must be present. Second, the other employees not involved in the collapse must be addressed. How will it be addressed to the employees, what must be told to them, what must be kept confidential and how to move forward. This also holds true for the media of any sort. Knowing each of the audiences is critical to deliver the most effect message. The person must be of sound mind, as much as possible under the circumstances. Respectful, persuasive, and truthful but never manipulative when delivering the facts. What would be the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident? The needs are going to be great, and there will be several questions from the...

Gcse Music Revision

...Music Revision Relative Keys: In music, relative keys are the major and minor scales that have the same key signatures. A major and minor scale sharing the same key signature are said to be in a relative relationship. The relative minor of a particular major key, or the relative major of a minor key, is the key which has the same key signature but a different tonic; this is as opposed to parallel minor or major, which shares the same tonic. Relative keys are closely related keys, the keys between which most modulations occur, in that they differ by no more than one accidental (none in the case of relative keys) The minor key starts three semitones below its relative major; for example, A minor is three semitones below its relative, C Major. G major and E minor both have a single sharp in their key signature at F♯; therefore, E minor is the relative minor of G major, and conversely G major is the relative major of E minor. The tonic of the relative minor is the sixth scale degree of the major scale, while the tonic of the relative major is the third degree of the minor scale. > (marked near note head) | Accent: emphasis on a particular note | A triad is a chord of three notes. | | The chord built on the first note of the scale, I, is called the tonic.
