The Miriam Webster definition of the word depersonalization is the act or process of causing or the state resulting from loss of the sense of personal identity. I had never heard of this word until I read the essay. The author talks about when reading poetry, the reader must distance their mind to completely lose themselves in the text. Furthermore, the essay reads, “Poetry is not turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion, it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality.” This idea breaks tradition because it kind of changes everything you are taught in school growing up.
