It seemed that the American imperialism was less harsh as compared to what we experienced during the Spanish colonization due to war wherein many Filipinos died. However, imperialism just continued the colonization and the striking here was that they had tactics in a subtle manner. It is clearly implied that American rule was definitely deceiving and we were blind of what the reality is. For example, the Benevolent Assimilation, there was a declaration of establishing sovereignty with a policy that would respect the customs and traditions of the people. However, it was fake and not perfected as our identity as a Filipino fades little by little. Even the capitalism and globalization alienates us which only in favor of first world and industrialized countries. We have been chained which was the reason why we have unsolved problems such as poverty as we became dependent to the Americans’ economy. Imperialism can be compared to a diamond because of the good promises (that all we thought was for the Filipinos welfare) has a deceiving sparkle that was full of rhetoric (i.e., capitalism—free trade, globalization, etc). Filipinos’ reverence in opportunist people of the other country was indubitable as the United States conducted discreet strategies in order to manoeuvre us and even poison the minds of Filipinos. Due to the fact that Americans used their power to have total predominance over us, Filipinos are molded in using and embracing all cultures, traditions, language, and even the way of thinking. They imparted the colonial mentality of the Filipinos as when the Thomasites taught us their language and we were prohibited to use our own; also, they made us very distant to our own culture and tradition, even singing our national anthem was restrained. As a result, we have always been imported-minded. We just accepted how we were divided and ruled by the Americans. The elites, illustrados, and principalia during Spanish era were given different positions in the government that is why they had the opportunity to get the support and sympathy of Filipinos. Filipinos are not unified; we do not perceive what we suppose to perceive, we just normalize the fact that we are divided and ruled due to rhetoric and deceiving benefits/promises as if we accept as it was (let it be) even if it is worthless to us in the very beginning. Our character now is mirrored to what we are in the past.

Imagination - “Girl Before the Mirror”

...Imagination - “Girl Before the Mirror” Kaiulani Frink Eng/340 May 21, 2012 University of Phoenix Imagination - “Girl Before the Mirror” The painting by Pablo Picasso “Girl Before the Mirror” was the painting that caught my attention because at first glance I notice a woman adjusting the mirror as she is looking at her reflection; this is something I do every day. I gazed longer at the painting and the woman’s appearance seems to be younger in the mirror, perhaps she is reflecting on her past (youth). The dialogue taking place in this story is with herself as she is reflecting on the many years that have passed and how her appearance has changed. Her pregnancy has captured her attention to the changes in her life. The painting reflects the past, present, and future. The different colors, lines, and shapes tell a story about her development. The colors in the mirror are deep dark in color representing a faint memory of what once was. Looking at herself in the mirror gives her a sense of relief yet pain. She can still see a little of her youth in the mirror, which easies some of her distress as she is aging knowing one day that the memories of her youth will soon fade. The long strokes of lines and curves in the mirror by her face and around her head display a covering a sense of innocence; before she has known a man intimately. The lines in the lower area of her body in the mirror shows it is still in development as the lines are arched up and not down in a drooping...

Close Analysis; Girl in the Mirror

...Samantha Barreau College of Mount Saint Vincent English 110: Writing in Context I Professor Rogers Close Analysis; “Girl before the Mirror” For this essay I chose a painting by Pablo Picasso called “Girl before a Mirror”, according to the research I had done, this painting is in connection to his mistress Marie- Therese Walter. It displays several view, depending on who’s interpreting the painting. Pablo Picasso became one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and the creator (with someone named Georges Braque) of Cubism. A painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer, Picasso was considered radical within his work. The poem that is showed in connection to this painting is called “Before the Mirror” by John Updike. This poem is the poets emotions, thoughts and views based on the painting. John Updike was an award-winning writer of fiction, essays, and reviews, John Updike has also been writing poetry for most of his life. He was inspired by his mother, who was also a writer. For me, “Girl before the Mirror’ is a painting that talks about reflections of one’s self or how we see ourselves versus how others see us even the duality of our natures. There are so many levels your creativity and critical thinking can go in regards to Picasso’s intent with this painting. I can see this particular Picasso painting in a philosophy class where people are wrestling or conversing what the exact meaning of this painting is. The painting...

Reflecting Light Off a Plane Mirror Lab Questions and Answers

...discovered in this activity? Answers a. The angle of incidence (the angle between the light emitted from a source and the normal) and the angle of reflection (the angle between the light that bounces from the surface and the normal) have the same angle. This is because a reflection coming from a plane mirror is usually equivalent to the object it is reflecting; this means that the angle in which the incident ray hits the mirror will be the same angle as the reflected ray. b. When the light was directed to the mirror at the same angle as the normal, the incident ray travelled straight along the normal line towards the mirror and as it hit the mirror it made the reflected ray travel straight along the normal line away from the mirror and towards the light source. c. There are places where errors could've occurred in this activity; first, when the light was aimed at the plane mirror the spot in which the incident ray had to hit was the normal end of the mirror but in some cases one angle could be right on the normal and other angles a bit off. The tracing of the line which is created by the rays might not always be precise which can also alter a bit the final result. Also if the mirror was moved at all during the time that the experiment was performed. d. These errors can affect the conclusion by affecting the measurements and could lead to...

Mottos

...do to dwell on the past and forget to live.” To me this means that once something happens it`s best to deal with the situation, and then get over it. Dwelling on the situation only creates a false sense of hope, and it will continue to mess with your li To me this motto is important because I have a tendency to get hung up on something once it happens, and I can’t let it go. I let it consume my entire life. This has happened to me several times. When I was a little girl I adored my grandmother. I spent at least one day a week with from the time I was six months old up until I went to kindergarten. One day she made a comment about my mother that didn’t particularly sit right with me. She had just meant it as a joke, but I didn't quite understand it and took it to heart. I didn’t say anything to her because I didn’t want her to know that she had upset me. I let it get to me so much that I stopped talking to my grandma, and didn’t speak to her or go to visit her for around 2 years. I just couldn`t get over the fact that my grandma had said so rude and hateful about her daughter-in-law. Choosing to cut her out of my life for that time has put a strain on our relationship. It has gotten better, but it will never return to normal. The motto that I choose to apply to my life is from the book Harry Potter and The Sorcerer`s Stone. It reads “It does not do to dwell on dreams, and forget to live.” In this book Harry finds a mirror, and when he looks into this mirror he sees all the things...

Mirror Traffic

...http://altohio.com/mirror-traffic Mirror Traffic, the fifth release from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks is the glorious distillation of the S.M. oeuvre. Produced by Beck Hanson, the album maintains the lanky looseness of former Jicks-backed offerings even as its songs are condensed down to their respective essences—several tracks clock in at less than three minutes, a stark contrast to previous records where 10-minute guitar odysseys were becoming common. Much like Bob Dylan’s twenty-first century output, Mirror Traffic digs through the past to repurpose musical styles, from psychedelic LA country to first-wave British punk, twisting them into new but familiar shapes. Beck’s role as producer seems split between tightening up the performances and curating the palette of stylistic overlays drawn from the Rock History vault. On “Long Hard Book,” reverb-soaked slide guitar evoke desert midnight, while the chorus’s pedal steel pairs with Joanna Bolme’s spot-on Emmy Lou Harris impression to create an afterimage of some long-lost Grievous Angel outtake, until a fuzzed-out guitar outro pulls the listener back into unmistakably Malkmusian territory. “Tune Grief” is the song the Buzzcocks might’ve recorded if they’d grown up in southern California, a short punchy track complete with single-note guitar solo and beach-bright backing vocals. All of Mirror Traffic’s influences have surfaced in Malkmus’ previous work, from Watery, Domestic onward, but here, arguably benefitting from its...

Age And Immortality In Ozymandias

...contradictory themes of human nature--as a person gets older, their wish to live forever only grows deeper; they become desperate as they find a way, any way, to be able to defeat death and live generations into the future. Age is inevitable, and immortality is unachievable. It is for this reason that everyone rejects their old age and are eager to embrace the ideas of life past death. Many people chase power in pursuit of immortality, but many people do not realize time eventually erases everything. Percy Shelley’s “Ozymandias” highlights the power of time as a traveler visits the ruins of Ozymandias, a great king of the past who is now forgotten. All that is left of his legacy is a broken statue that reads, “‘Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’” (11), in which the speaker then comments, “nothing beside remains” (12). This...

... * Love cannot be based on passion alone. CONFLICT: External conflict, Man vs. Man. We can see that Agueda and Badoy after having a bad married life with each other, used to regret the past that they’ve been together and it is revealed with their hatred for each other and how Agueda used to describe the devil to her granddaughter as if it was Badoy and same way as Badoy describing the witch in the mirror to his grandson as if it was Agueda. LITERARY MOVEMENT: GOTHIC FICTION with REALISM The story happened in the year of 1847 and it has a little blend of horror and fiction because of the superstitious belief of fortune telling as well as the devil and witch that will come out in the mirror if everything in the ritual will go wrong. ANALYSIS: Agueda and Badoy’s bitter marriage all began on that May night. Agueda and Badoy are two, completely different people. Agueda is a girl ahead of her time. She is bold and liberated unlike most girls her age. She stands out from the broad range of followers of her era. The tragedy is when Badoy’s heart forgets how much he felt for Agueda. The tragedy is how both were not careful enough to mend their drifting marriage. Both Badoy and Agueda perceived their marriage to be a taste of hell. Instead of admitting that they saw their spouses in the mirror, they claimed that it was the witch/devil they saw for that was probably how each of them was to each other during their life together. Their contrasting attributes perhaps were what brought...

Sylvia Plath’s Mirror: a Reflection

...Sylvia Plath’s Mirror: A Reflection Misty Williams ENG125 Introduction to Literature Instructor Stephen Rogers July 22, 2013 I was drawn to Sylvia Plath’s poem Mirror because of her use of figurative language. I am also drawn to her dark style of writing. Personification, symbolism and metaphors used were key elements in attracting my attention. The personification of the mirror gives the point of view of an impartial bystander observing a woman as she struggles with her changing image and self-esteem. The simile is used to show a woman who is unable to accept who she really is. The use of metaphor explains how something as small as a mirror can have much control over how we view ourselves. Personification occurs when inanimate objects, animals or ideas are assigned human characteristics. In the first four lines the mirror is given human traits with the use of the word “I”, “Whatever I see, I swallow…” gives the ability to see and swallow, and “I am not cruel, only truthful” gives the mirror a sense of truth and honesty. (As cited by Clugston, 2010, 12.2) The use of personification brings into effect past, present and future. This different perspective allowed me to “see” what the mirror sees and not get involved in the emotions of the woman and how she views herself. The mirror and reflection are metaphors representing the exact truth. The mirror is "unmisted" by prejudice human "preconceptions" and reveals "only" the "truthful" viewpoints...

A Reflection in Sylvia Plath's Mirror

...A Reflection in Sylvia Plath’s Mirror Amanda L. Wilson Eng:125 Introduction to Literature Professor Lyndsey Lefebvre November 18, 2013 A Reflection in Sylvia Plath’s Mirror Sylvia Plath’s poem Mirror (1963) is evocative, provocative, and expressive. According to Clugston (2010) these are important components of poetry. Sylvia Plath’s first line is a projection of the mirror providing its introduction saying, “I am silver and exact”(Plath, 1963, line 1). The mirror is the protagonist who performs a dramatic monologue about the reflections it observes throughout the days and years of its life. The mirror’s identity awakens the reader to the identity of the woman which it sees, but the mirror not only sees the woman, it becomes her. William Freedman (1993) writes, in The Monster in Plath’s “Mirror”: The woman becomes a narrating reflector of herself as mirror and of whatever passes before it. She becomes the writer who writes of the mirror in which she perceives herself and of the mirror she is (pg 156). Plath develops the character of the mirror, and the woman this mirror observes, through the personification of the mirror. Plath’s Mirror, maneuvers through figurative language, free verse form, personification, and metaphor. The primary language of Mirror is figurative. Figurative language is defined by Clugston (2010) as “the use of words in ways they are not normally used in order to create a distinct imaginative effect or impression” (10.3). “I am silver...

Snow White

...in the kingdom and she would often ask her magic mirror, “Mirror! Mirror on the wall! Who is the fairest of them all?” And the magic mirror would say, “You are, Your Majesty!” But one day, the mirror replied, “Snow White is the fairest of them all!” The wicked queen was very angry and jealous of Snow White. She ordered her huntsman to take Snow White to the forest and kill her. “I want you to bring back her heart,” she ordered. But when the huntsman reached the forest with Snow White, he took pity on her and set her free. He killed a deer and took its heart to the wicked queen and told her that he had killed Snow White. Snow White wandered in the forest all night, crying. When it was daylight, she came to a tiny cottage and went inside. There was nobody there, but she found seven plates on the table and seven tiny beds in the bedroom. She cooked a wonderful meal and cleaned the house and tired, finally slept on one of the tiny beds. At night, the seven dwarfs who lived in the cottage came home and found Snow White sleeping. When she woke up and told them her story, the seven dwarfs asked her to stay with them. When the dwarfs were away, Snow White would make delicious meals for them. The dwarfs loved her and cared for her. Every morning, when they left the house, they instructed her never to open the door to strangers. Meanwhile, in the palace, the wicked queen asked, “Mirror! Mirror on the Who is the fairest of them The mirror replied, White is the fairest of them all! She lives...

Snow White Research Paper

...“Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?” “You are, my queen,” bellowed the mirror. It is no doubt that the villain of the story is the “greatest”—or in the instance above, “fairest”—one of all. This character sustains power, excellence, and (sometimes) beauty throughout the progression of the storyline. Although the con carries out an exceptionable amount of malevolent deeds in comparison to noble deeds, he or she does so with an admirable use of charisma, skill, and intelligence. Such qualities cannot simply be taught to one; they must be acquired throughout a period of hardship or a bottomless feeling of melancholy. If given the opportunity, I would choose to be a villain over a hero in a movie solely because of my admiration...

No Mirror, No Problem

...“No Mirror, No Problem” I set out to change something about myself. Now, believe me, this is much easier said than done. Especially if you’re someone like me that has a million and one things you’d like to change about yourself, and you’re in denial about pretty much all of them. It’s like picking a meal off a menu that you hate everything on. Though, after some reflection, I thought up something interesting and seemingly challenging. That’s where my journey began. I was walking around my house trying to think up some little things I could do or stop doing, when I found myself looking in the mirror. Just sitting there blindly staring at myself while trying to come up with something. Selfish, I know. Then I thought, “I look in the mirror way too much. Why do I look in the mirror so much? My eyebrows look like shit. THAT’S IT!” There it was, the center of all my problems. I’m the most self-critical person I’ve ever known and I think it all relates back to my image, sadly. In that moment of realization, I was a genius and I had just came up with the best, most relative idea ever. I decided what I’d do; I would not look in the mirror for two weeks. I was extremely excited to start for some strange reason. I couldn’t wait, really. Right after I had my epiphany, I ran to the hall closet, dug out an old sheet, and hung it up over the big mirror in my bathroom. I also turned around the unnecessarily large mirror I have in my hallway; it stands right across from my bedroom door...
