Case Study Questions

1. One consulting firm has predicted that video and Web conferencing will make business travel extinct. Do you agree? Why or why not?
Disagree. To some extent, video and web conferencing do reduce the business travel, but not completely. There are still plenty of times when face-to-face interaction is more desirable, and often traveling to meet a client is essential for cultivating clients and closing sales. When it is necessary to be present, there is no alternative.

2.What is the distinction between videoconferencing and telepresence?
Videoconferencing is the conduct of a videoconference (also known as a video conference or video teleconference) by a set of telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to communicate by simultaneous two-way video and audio transmissions.
Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allows a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance of being present, or to have an effect, at a place other than their true location. It is the top-of-the-line videoconferencing technology.
The distinction between them lies in technology. Telepresence picks up where videoconferencing leaves off. Telepresence is real time, full-high-definition, immersible sound and vision and more technologically advanced than videoconferencing and thus more costly than it.

What are the ways in which videoconferencing provides value to a business? Would you consider it smart management? Explain your answer. Videoconferencing can enable individuals in distant locations to participate in meetings on short notice, with time and money savings. Intel Corporation have used videoconferencing to reduce both costs and environmental impacts of its business operations Videoconferencing is also currently being introduced on online networking websites, in order to help businesses form profitable relationships quickly and efficiently without leaving their place of work. This has been leveraged by banks to connect busy banking professionals with customers in various locations using video banking technology. It also helps improve communications and professional relationships.
Definitely it is smart management.

If you were in charge of a small business, would you choose to implement videoconferencing? What factors would you consider in your decision?
Yes, we would choose to implement videoconferencing. It would reduce the cost and time and really benefit a lot. But implementing videoconferencing depends on the nature of my venture and also to make sure whether it is a profitable venture. The factors should be consider is:
The nature of the venture

...What are the inputs, processing, and outputs of UPS’s package tracking system? The goal is to have detailed information about the sender, destination and when the package should arrive. Even before the package is picked up, information from the "smart" label is transmitted to one of the UPS computer centers and then sent to the closest center for the destination, they even download it and create the most efficient delivery route. The first thing a UPS driver picks up each day is a handheld computer called a Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD), which they can log into and download the route, it's then uploaded for storage that takes less than a minute and processing and can be accessed worldwide for proof or customer queries. Because of these things what UPS has done is made the delivery as efficient as possible and highly monitored by both them and their customers. Basically storing all different information such as the destination, the time it should arrive as well as the customers information. What technologies are used by UPS? How are these technologies related to UPS’s business strategy? Now the second question asks how the technology relates to their business strategy, and the only thing i could find regarding their business strategy is one quote from 1907 that promised: “The best service and lowest rates.” So with that in mind lets start with the scannable bar-coded label. It attached to a package which we already mentioned contains......

...management information system (MIS). Per Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, it is critical for managers to understand what motivates individuals. Without providing the staff with clear expectations, it is impossible for the managers to understand how to motivate them to accomplish the objectives. Another problem seems to be that upper management and the administrators have different views of the importance of correct data entry into the MIS. Upper management sees it as providing misleading information to the federal government, which could lead to a loss of grant aid, while the administrators feel that taking the time to ensure accurate data entry into the MIS takes away from the services they provide to patients. Q2. What information would you want to analyze? R2. The first area that should be analyzed is the MIS itself and whether it is too cumbersome or confusing for the administrators to input data accurately. Assuming the MIS is performing as expected, the various models of behavior (e.g. happy-is-productive, good- citizen) should be analyzed to determine the best way to motivate the administrators to perform better as it relates to data entry into the MIS. Finally, it would be valuable to analyze what patient services or staff cuts would be required if the federal funding was reduced or eliminated due to the inaccurate reporting. Q3. What actions might you recommend to increase the accuracy of the data entry? R3. One action that could be taken to......

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a therapeutic approach that was originally developed in the alcohol and other drug field by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick (Miller 1983 Miller & Rollnick, 1991). Characteristics of Management Information System

...MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM An effective management information system (MIS) assembles data available from company operations, external inputs and past activities into information that shows what the company has achieved in key areas of interest, and what is required for further progress. The purpose of a MIS is to help executives of an organization make decisions that advance the organization's goals. The most important characteristics of an MIS are those that give decision-makers confidence that their actions will have the desired consequences. To function effectively as an interacting, interrelated, and interdependent feedback tool for management and staff, MIS must be "useable." The five elements of a useable MIS system are: * Timeliness * Accuracy * Consistency * Completeness * Relevance The usefulness of MIS is hindered whenever one or more of these elements are compromised. Timeliness: To simplify prompt decision making, an institution's MIS should be capable of providing and distributing current information to appropriate users. Information systems should be designed to expedite reporting of information. The system should be able to quickly collect and edit data, summarize results, and be able to adjust and correct errors promptly. Information must be on time for the purpose for which it is required. Information received too late will be irrelevant. For example, if you receive a brochure from a theatre and......

Management Information System

...PROJECT SUBMITTED BY D.Muthamizh MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS Management information systems (MIS) is the study of people, technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. This definition, given by Mays Business School, relates specifically to MIS as a course of study. In other words, MIS is commonly used in business schools to refer to the study of how individuals, groups, and organizations evaluate, design, implement, manage, and utilize systems to generate information to improve efficiency and effectiveness of decision making, including systems termed decision support systems, expert systems, and executive information systems. Many business schools (or colleges of business administration within universities) have an MIS department, alongside departments of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and may award degrees (at undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels) in MIS. A good definition of MIS in practice has been given in a journal article: "Establishing and Managing Management Information Systems in Developing Countries" by Dr. Chris Prince Udochukwu Njoku. Dr. Njoku gave the comprehensive definition after a critical assessment of many definitions, some of which he cited, and described them as inadequate. MIS professionals help organizations--big, medium and small--realize maximum benefit from investments in personnel, equipment, and business processes. MIS is people-oriented, with an emphasis on service. Although it is today increasingly built on......

Survey Research Methodology in Management Information Systems: an Assessment

...ABSTRACT Survey research is believed to be well understood and applied by MIS scholars. It has been applied for several years, it is well defined, and it has precise procedures which, when followed closely, yield valid and easily interpretable data. Our assessment of the use of survey research in the MIS field between 1980 and 1990 indicates that this perception is at odds with reality. Our analysis indicates that survey methodology is often misapplied and is plagued by five important weaknesses: (1) single method designs where multiple methods are needed, (2) unsystematic and often inadequate sampling procedures,(3) low response rates, (4) weak linkages between units of analysis and respondents, and (5) over reliance on cross-sectional surveys where longitudinal surveys are really needed. Our assessment also shows thatthe quality of survey research varies considerably among studies of different purposes: explanatory studies are of good quality overall, exploratory and descriptive studies are of moderate to poor quality. This article presents a general framework for classifying and examining survey research and uses this framework to assess, review and critique the usage of survey research conducted in the past decade in the MIS field. In an effort to improve the quality of survey research, this article makes specific recommendations that directly address the major problems highlighted in the review. INTRODUCTION Science may be said to progress on its methods. The production...
