Two-faced

Like night and day, people often have two totally different sides to them. Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Possibility of Evil” is a great example of two complete different sides to someone. Miss Strangeworth is a very polite old lady, but she seems to have developed a new side to her. Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does, what the narrator says about her, and how other characters interact with her. Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does. She always seems to look at the bright side of things, which causes her to act very friendly. For example, “Walking down Main Street on a summer morning, Miss Strangeworth had to stop every minute or so to say good morning to someone or to ask after someone’s health.” This helps us illustrate how she made an effort to be friendly to other people. She made time out of her schedule to ask other people how they are. She also is very nice to the people at the grocery store. She really loves her town, and it causes her to keep her house looking good. Specifically when the narrator says, “People around town wondered how old Miss Strangeworth managed to keep the house looking the way it did, and there was a legend about a tourist mistaking it for the local museum and going all through the place without finding out about his mistake.” This helps us illustrate the idea that she wanted the town to think highly of her. She was a clean freak. Her house was spotless, even on the inside. That is, “Every window sparkled, every curtain hung stiff and straight, and even the stones were swept and clear.” When people thought of a clean house, they immediately thought of her.
