Novartis was created in 1996 through the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz, two companies with a rich and diverse corporate history. Throughout the years, Novartis and its predecessor companies have discovered and developed many innovative products for patients and consumers worldwide. Novartis has five business segments and is supported by global research organization, the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). These segments are strategically aligned to bring innovative, high-quality and affordable medicines and therapies to patients around the world. There website is: http://www.ubpinc.org The current mission statement is as follows: “United Bronx Parents, Inc. (UBP) is a private, not-for profit “community grown” human services agency – providing a variety of social services in the South Bronx and on a citywide basis. Since 1965, UBP’s mission has been “To provide the basic human services necessary for families and individuals to obtain self-proficiency through dignity in their struggle to participate as the functioning and valuable citzens they are.”” The mission statement for UBP is aesthetically good and overall meaningful. It has a purpose statement, it lists the population it is working with and the activities. It also touches on its values and the geographic region it serves. However, it is longer than thirty words. Under INC 500 Companies, there were a plethora of well formulated mission statements along with poorly formulated ones. One company whose statement did not reach expectations was uSight. Their mission stated, “Our goal is to provide the best products with the greatest service possible.” There are many flaws in this statement starting with the lack of information. uSight does not reveal who their customers are, what products they are selling, or what their basic beliefs or values are. They could be selling automobiles, computers, or even hair products, but the customer would never know from their simply stated goals. It is imperative that the company shares with the public what major products or services they are providing and which kind of customer would benefit from their help. If a mission statement is too vague it doesn’t truly represent what a certain company, like uSight, is all about. Another company, on the other hand, had an excellent mission statement under the INC 500 Company list known as Portage Environmental.
