I have been in the work force for over 20 years. I’ve worked in several different fields which include retail, law firm, postal service to insurance industry. I’ve been working in the insurance industry for the last seven years specializing in P&C claims with a focus on customer service. The environment I currently work in provides ample opportunity to deal directly with customers from all over the country. It is also a fast paced environment that is consistently changing which means adapting to the changes and quickly. Helping people each day work through their insurance claims takes patience, empathy and knowledge of the company and its policies. There are also licensing requirements that are required depending on what state the company wants me to work with. This is something done on my own time and depending on competitive I want to be within the company I could get licensed in each state.

Companies I Would Like To Work For

I’ve been working in customer service my entire career and intend to stay in that field to some extent. Since being in the insurance industry I have acquired licensees required to handle claims in various states. I company that I would interested in working for would be USAA. Outside of having a great customer rating they also have a good reputation from their employees. Already having insurance education and licensing is in my favor and means the company doesn’t have to take the time to provide that
The second company I’m interested in is not really a certain company but specifically the wine industry. Although it’s completely out of the field I currently work in I help out a friend that has their own winery. I’ve learned a lot about the process throughout the last couple of years and I live very close to Napa Valley where a wealth of wineries provide opportunities for possible employment.
The third choice for a company I would interested in is Jelly Belly. Again this company is out of my current field of insurance but my customer service background would come in handy. Jelly Belly is one of the largest factories in the town I currently live in. After I obtain my Bachelor’s degree I think that I would be more competitive for a job at this particular company. They manufacture candy and ship it all over the world. They are well known for their exotic flavors.

Strategies for Contacting These Companies

Making yourself stand out from others interested in the same position is the hardest part. The internet and social media plays a big role in networking within your personal life and in business. LinkedIn is a great resource when trying to connect to people in various fields of business. It’s an opportunity to connect with people within the company and it would get my name out there along with my profile. Facebook and Twitter also provide an opportunity to connect with people within the company but not on the same professional level. The internet also provides the opportunity to apply to any of the above noted companies online,

Going to events that the companies hold is a great way to mingle with people within the company. I know that Jelly Belly and most wineries have various events throughout the year and you have plenty of opportunity to get to know those in various positions within the company. It also gives me the opportunity to see how the company works and how the public perceives them.

Just applying for the job in a traditional way and if an interview is given then you have the opportunity to establish a relationship within the H.R. department. This is a positive because if they like you but you don’t get the job then you can express the desire to work with the company and they may keep you in mind if a new position becomes available.

I think the main thing is that you have to learn to sell yourself and come up with what brand you want yourself to be. Does your brand fit the company you want to work for? I personally think that knowing your strengths and weakness is a must in the business world. Being prepared to sell yourself at any given moment to a company representative if even at an event, it’s good to have an idea of what these traits are and knowing how to discuss them so it promotes why those skills would work for that particular company.
