Flash Mob Robberies

...Flash Mob Robberies Americans, despite their religion, race, ethnicity, or gender, never gave much thought to the terms like “flash mob robberies” or “organized looting.” However, these expressions have become acknowledge to the American society due to their criminal nature and the alarming frequency in which they take place. Historically, a flash mob was clearly an assembly of people who unexpectedly appeared at the same location at the same time. Now, flash mobs began to incorporate robberies, but they occurred infrequently across the country. Unfortunately, because of the economic collapse, flash mobs have become very notorious and are increasing in numbers in turning into criminal action in attempt to survive in America. Adolescents take advantage of social media, such as Facebook, and Twitter, to organize large group of other adolescents to assemble at a certain time and place. Once assembled, the large groups of delinquents run into a store steal as much merchandise as they can in a very short period of time. This is so the retail merchant does not have time to react. As a result, the once unfamiliar term is no notoriously known amongst all Americans. All across the country, retailers and other Americans have personally witnessed and reported multiple flash mob incidents. Law enforcement officers have recognized the accuracy of the flash mop epidemic and are taking the criminal manner very seriously. There are two important elements which make flash...

The Departed

...The Departed and the Irish Mob While not as talked about as the Italian mafia, the Irish Mob is just as violent and proficient in their ways. Taking place in South Boston, the departed depicts a fictitious, but only just, account of the struggle between the Massachusetts State Police and the Irish Mob. Leonardo Dicaprio’s character Billy Costigan is a new member of the MSP and is chosen to become an undercover officer because of his background. Costigan’s father was from South Boston, and Costigan spent time there as a child. He infiltrates the Irish Mob, headed by Jack Nicholson’s character Frank Costello. Frank is the violent head of the Irish Mob that seems to never really be convicted of his crimes. We later come to find out that is in part because of his status as an FBI informant. Costello has an informant in the MSP by way of Matt Damon’s character Colin Sullivan. Sullivan grew up in Costello’s neighborhood and Costello was almost a father figure to him. With his loyalty to Costello, Sullivan was convinced to join the MSP and feed information to Costello. As the movie progresses, both Sullivan and Costigan find out about each other as “rats”, but not necessarily each other’s identities until towards the end. Sullivan upon finding out who Costigan is, erases his file after the death of Captain Queenan at the hands of the Irish Mob and the dismissal of Sargent Dignam. In the end Barrigan, another one if Costello’s men on the inside, shoots Costigan and Sullivan’s partner...

...WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND MOBILE COMPUTING Wirel. Commun. Mob. Comput. 2004; 4:247–249 (DOI: 10.1002/wcm.220) Guest Editorial Special Issue: Scalability Issues in Wireless Networks— Architectures, Protocols and Services By Amitabh Mishra, Guest Editor Scalability of computer-communication networks has been an important topic for quite some time. Internet community examined the services and protocols for scalability, and switching and routing researchers looked at the scalability of the switches and routers. Service providers studied the application architectures of the services for the scalable performance that they need to provide to subscribers and, the maintenance folks paid attention to scalability of service provisioning algorithms, protocols and software. Similarly, the wireless networking community has also started to look at the scalability issues that are relevant to wireless cellular, wireless local, as well as wireless personal area networks besides the emerging area of infrastructure-less networks such as ad-hoc and sensor networks. Surprisingly there is significant scope for research in the wireless scalability area as it relates to the ad hoc and sensor networks and this is one of the reasons why this topic was chosen for a special issue. A wireless sensor network is likely to have a large number of nodes perhaps in thousands to millions and that may create, potentially, numerous scaling problems in the networking protocols, addressing schemes, hardware architectures...

...A1. Risk Factors Trinity conducted a community health needs assessment in which the following demands were identified: Oncology Services, Orthopedic Services and Cardiovascular Services. These targeted demands are mainly in part due to an aging community population (15% of the population will be over 65 within the next five years), and with that these particular services are in great demand and currently Trinity Hospital offers no formal services of this kind. A Strategic plan is in place to target these services and a recommendation to implement will be provided and we will first identify the risk factors for each of these services in the community and how the needs are being addressed at the current time in the Trinity community. Oncology Services- There are several risk factors affecting the community if cancer treatment isn’t addressed in an appropriate manner. New cancer cases are expected to grow at a 34% rate in the next five years and currently the facilities and equipment to diagnose and treat patients is not able to keep up with the growth of cancer patient volume and physicians and nurses say that the available services are disorganized and poorly put together. This is a visible risk to the community and Trinity Hospital if the surrounding community cannot depend on the hospital to adequately diagnose and treat their illness. Another risk factor is the need for cancer prevention and educational programs focusing on lifestyle changes to emphasize healthy living...

The Traitorous Tyco Scandal: Sentencing of L. Dennis Kozlowski and Mark Swartz

...The Traitorous Tyco Scandal: Sentencing of L. Dennis Kozlowski and Mark Swartz Business Law 447-A Written By: Lindsey Proffitt White collar crime is not a victimless crime, and affects many people. These crimes can devastate a company, force investors to lose billions of dollars, and destroy people’s life savings. Through L. Dennis Kozlowski’s and Mark Swartz’s scandal reported in 2002, the Tyco Company lost over $28 billion dollars in debt. However, the biggest lash came to its shareholders who lost over $90 billion. The Tyco two were tried and found guilty in 2005, and are currently serving a 25- year- sentence. Crime never pays and it is only a matter of time before one is caught. The damage done affects all people involved including the innocent families of the victims and criminals. These two may not have ruined the company, but they ruined themselves. The question is was it worth it? Partners in Crime: The Tyco Threesome When people think of criminals; they tend to stereotype this to involve thugs and the lower class. However, this is not always the case. Participants of the privileged society are also capable of criminal behavior, but usually in a more complex manner. One of the more popular high society crimes involves business scandals and is termed “white-collar.” These crimes stem from greedy business and government professionals who become financially motivated to commit a nonviolent work related crime that usually includes hoarding large amounts of money...

Prediction Markets at Google

...9-607-088 REV: AUGUST 20, 2007 PETER A. COLES KARIM R. LAKHANI ANDREW P. MCAFEE Prediction Markets at Google In late March of 2007, Bo Cowgill, Ilya Kirnos, Doug Banks, Patri Friedman, and Piaw Na sat down to lunch at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, and reviewed the most recent results from the company’s internal prediction markets. The five Googlers (as Google employees referred to themselves) had launched the company’s prediction markets, built the information systems that supported them, and overseen them during the previous seven quarters, all while working at their “normal” jobs. The markets had grown in popularity and demonstrated their accuracy during that time, and the team was proud of its accomplishments. Prediction markets were very much like stock markets. They contained securities, each of which had a price. People used the market to trade with one another by buying and selling these securities. Because traders had differing beliefs about what the securities were worth, and because events occurred over time that altered these beliefs, the prices of securities varied over time. In a stock market like the New York Stock Exchange the securities being traded were shares in companies, the prices of which reflected beliefs about the value of the companies. In a prediction market, in contrast, the securities being traded were related to future events such as an American presidential election. In this case, the market could be designed so that...

Between the summer of 1941 and that of 1942 the field of battle in the Libyan desert shifted to and fro with almost the regularity of a pendulum, or so it seemed. The extremes of the swing were from Mersa Brega in the west and Buq Buq to the east, except for the small stretch of Egyptian territory east of Sollum, the area between these two places covered the whole of Cyrenaica, the eastern province of Libya. 2. Although Tobruk itself, seventy miles west of the Egyptian frontier, is well to the east of the centre of this area, it remained the fulcrum about which the pendulum swung for...

...Contemporary Hate Crimes, Law Enforcement, and the Legacy of Racial Violence Ryan D. King University at Albany-SUNY Robert D. Baller University of Iowa This article investigates the association between past lynchings (1882 to 1930) and contemporary law enforcement responses to hate crimes in the United States. While prior research indicates a positive correlation between past levels of lynching and current social control practices against minority groups, we posit an inverse relationship for facets of social control that are protective of minorities. Specifically, we hypothesize that contemporary hate crime policing and prosecution will be less vigorous where lynching was more prevalent prior to 1930. Analyses show that levels of past lynching are associated with three outcome variables germane to hate crime policing and prosecution, but the effect of lynching is partly contingent on the presence of a minority group threat. That is, past lynching combined with a sizeable black population largely suppresses (1) police compliance with federal hate crime law, (2) police reports of hate crimes that target blacks, and in some analyses (3) the likelihood of prosecuting a hate crime case. Our findings have implications for research on law and intergroup conflict, historical continuity in the exercise of state social control, and theories that emphasize minority group threat. Steven F. Messner University at Albany-SUNY onflict theories of crime and criminal law posit that the...
