Subject: Information Interview Report

As you have requested, I’ve investigated the public accounting profession and conducted an interview with somebody in the field.

Information on the accounting profession

The professional title for public accountants is Certified Public Accountant or commonly known as CPA. The position involves auditing companies by making sure that their financial statements match the actual transactions made by the company in a given period. Certified Public Accountants must graduate with a B.A. in accounting, earn a MAcc (Master of Accountancy), and pass the CPA exams. Upon receiving the title of a CPA, career opportunities are endless. A majority of people receive jobs with the “big 4” public accounting firms that are KPMG, Ernst and Young, PWC, and CBIZ (Bell). Others choose to work for companies that are large enough to have accounting departments. An average salary for someone who passed the CPA is around $60,000 which is dramatically larger compared to the average total occupations salary (bls.gov/OCO).

Background of interviewee

I interviewed Mike Chalfant on October 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Mike Chalfant works for a public accounting firm called KPMG. The KPMG Kansas City branch is located at 1000 Walnut St in downtown Kansas City. KPMG’s history spans back three centuries and features a number of significant mergers, most recently the combination of Peat Marwick International and Klynveld Main Goerdeler, into KPMG in 1987 (Cypert). KPMG International’s member firms have 145,000 professionals, including more than 8,000 partners, in 152 countries (kpmg.com). Mike earned his undergraduate degree and MAcc from Kansas University and went on to pass his CPA exams. Mike’s career path is to move up the ranks of the Kansas City branch. Currently

Mock Interview

...Eric Solis December 4, 2014 MAR4354 Mock Interview When conducting a mock interview such as this one, I found it a little difficult to come up with questions to ask for the interview. I realized that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be to be on the other side (to be the one coming up with the questions). But after being the interviewer, I found it easier to be the one asking the questions rather than being the interviewee; the one answering the questions. As the interviewee, I realized some things that I had never noticed before. I watched the video of the interview and it came to my attention that I am one of those people who tend to use the phrase “um” a lot. I thought I used that phrase a couple of times throughout my interview but as I looked back at the footage, it was certainly more than just a couple of times. I now know that this is one thing that I for sure need to work on and with that comes practice. Another thing I would like to comment on about my interview would be my eye contact. I did make eye contact with the interviewer but not at all times. I know it’s okay to not constantly have your eyes glued to that person but in the video it shows that I could have made more eye contact. To me, hand gestures are good when speaking but only to a certain extreme. I need to work on doing a little less on the hand gestures and a little more on the eye contact. Other than those minor things, I feel like I did extremely well. I answered each question with integrity...

Mock Interview

...Mock Interview Remix CO2520 Analysis 5.1 Lorenzo Enriquez ITT Technical Institute 11-11-2015 Ms. Nicole Willams Recently, I attended an Interview for HRI Properties for a position in their IT department. I had to go there building in downtown New Orleans. When I entered the building I had to sign in at the front desk and wait in the lobby till the interviewer was ready for me. I arrived early so I waited about twenty minutes till he was ready to interview me. I thought it was going to be a one on one interview; However, I was wrong. I arrived in the conference room there was a long conference table something that you only see on television. I sat down near the head of the table and there were two guys doing the interview. The first guy that was interviewing me was their lead IT person giving me trouble shooting problems that I had to solve on the spot. I believe I did fairly well, but I did not know one of the questions. I told him that I did not know the answer to the question; however, if you give me time I will find the answer to the problem. After he was doing giving me troubleshooting questions, the other interviewer began talking to me. This person was more worried about my character asking me personal questions. I think he was asking me these questions to see the type of person I was. I remember him asking me one question and that question was, what my biggest weakness is? At this point I am being truthful and I told him that one of...

Speed Dating Techniques in Mock Interviews: Lessons to Be Learned

...Speed Dating Techniques in Mock Interviews: Lessons to be Learned Sofia Vidalis, Ph.D. and Joseph J. Cecere, Ph.D., CPC Penn State Harrisburg Abstract A student seeking that professional position or practical summer experience has become enormous in their educational experience. A university provides the information and skills for the student so they can be successful in their job search. This may include resume preparation and cover letters towards the next step, the job interview. A mock interview is one way to prepare students for an actual employment interview. It allows students to gain experience and practice in answering questions similar to ones asked during an actual interview. It also helps students become more comfortable in the interview setting. Despite of the importance of mock interviews, most college students do not have that experience until their first job interview during a career fair, internship, or even after graduation. However, in today’s economic, interview preparation may be the determining factor to securing employment. One way in breaking the ice of interviewing jitters is to prepare the students in advance. The Civil Engineering/Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology program at Penn State University held a Mock Interview and Panel Discussion event to help students better prepare for an interview as realistic as possible. This was accomplished by inviting professionals from the industry from the construction management and engineering...

Richard Louv's "Last Child in Th Woods" Essay

...the Woods conveys a sarcastic tone and imagery to address the idea of “why do so many people no longer consider the physical world worth watching?” He also ponders, “Why do so many Americans say they want their children to watch less TV, yet continue to expand the opportunities for them to watch it?” Louv visualizes explaining the nineteenth century to a younger generation and how they will not understand what they hear. Louv assumes, “’You did what?’ they’ll ask. ‘Yes,’ we’ll say, ‘it’s true. We actually looked out the car window.’” He is sarcastic because he is in disbelief at how oblivious adolescence is becoming. Louv finds it humorous that children are becoming so dependent on technology and are becoming so detached from nature. He mocks our future generation and their foolhardiness that is arising within them. Richard Louv reminisces his days in the back seat of a driving car, and vividly explains his experience through imagery. He remembers when he “started with a kind of reverence at the horizon, as thunderheads and dancing rain moved with” him. He also personifies the “dancing rain” to portray his full image. Louv understands technology is going to expand and become more broad; however he can understand the intellectual details of nature that he remembers and realizes that technology is distracting people from visualizing “the variety or architecture, here and there; the woods and fields and water beyond the steamy edges- all that was and still available to the eye...

Body Image

...get to the point of having a positive body image and even though I still have insecurities, for the most part I feel pretty good about myself. One of the biggest things that challenges me in having a positive body image is when I go shopping. A lot of the time I find clothes that I really like but they may not have my size or the clothes are in my size but for some reason they don’t look right on my body. This has been something that has always stressed me out from a young age because I have always felt bad when I don’t fit into certain types of clothes. Another thing that challenges me is when I see people on TV criticizing people because of their weight. I’ve watched numerous talk shows where they will be talking about a celebrity and mock them for gaining weight. In turn this makes me feel even more insecure about my weight, especially if I weigh more than the person they are mocking. However; with my body I have learned to embrace the fact that having curves isn’t a bad thing. Being short sometimes benefits me because clothes that might be too short on other people fit me perfectly. I’ve also just overall embraced the fact that my body is my own and as long as I’m happy in my own skin that is what...

Being professional will make you stand out; will increase your chances of being hired and being treated with respect among others. Is Mac Flecknoe a Lampoon or a Satire

...Is Mac Flecknoe a lampoon or a satire? At a time when fiction from Grub Street hack writers (whom he called the “multitude of scribblers, who daily pester the world with their insufferable stuff ”) was becoming widely read, courtly poets and dramatists like Dryden felt a need to play the public role of arbiters of literary taste. Dryden was actively engaged in contemporary debates which sought to lay down standards of what was considered high and low art. He published his “Essay of Dramatic Poesie” in 1667 and “Discourses on Satire and Epic Poetry” in 1692. Both of these served as prescriptive texts for what passed muster as “good” art. In an age of a revived interest in the classics, many of the instructions on good satirical writing are based on the works of Horace, Persius and Juvenal. While he did not think highly of Horatian verse which used word-play like anagrams and “ackrosticks” and was favoured by Francophiles poets, he admired Juvenal and Persius for their unity of plot and their use of Wit, which he saw as a more masculine device than lampooning or raillery.    In MacFlecknoe, Dryden’s definition of good art also comes to be strongly associated with class. When he says that bad poetry laden with “Pure Clinches” or puns is inspired by the “suburban Muse”, his implication is that it is only the genteel circles of London that produce and read good poetry – thus, Bun-hill and Watling Street are down-market parts of London which  by virtue of their economic demography...

Evaluate the Usefulness of Research Into Persuading a Jury

...sides use an expert it may lead to a battle of experts and as a result jurors may be confounded even more. It can therefore be seen how expert testimony should not be used often and by both sides, something which potentially trials can put into practice. Another strength of this type of research is that it’s generally quite cheap to carry out, as it usually uses self-reports to obtain results, so many can be carried out and thus vast amounts of data can be collected. This means we can apply these results to the area that we are investigating, in this case persuading a jury. On the other hand, all of the research that has been carried out into persuading a jury has been based on mock trials. For example in the Pennington & Hastie study 130 students listened to tape recordings of a mock trial, and although mock trials may resemble real trials, they are not the real thing which means the methodology lacks ecological validity as the settings are usually lab experiments, making the results less valid and thus less useful. Also, most of the research into persuading a jury uses students as participants who were paid to participate or...

...To: Dr. James Melton From: Elizabeth Date: July 31, 2012 Subject: Mock Interview Evaluation This memo is in regards to the experience of a mock interview, goals for my future, and how to obtain these goals. Experience- Positives Overall, I believe I had a positive mock interview experience. I was marked excellent with a positive first impression, neatness, appropriate attire, hand gestures, and posture. Within the first few minutes of an interview a foundation is set based on your greeting and appearance alone. With a positive foundation set for the interview, I believe, it can make the interviewee show you are comfortable and confident with yourself when you give them a positive first impression. I was also able to mark excellent in being positive, courteous, asking appropriate question, volunteering information, leadership, good work habits, and problem-solving abilities. By knowing how to ask questions and give information appropriately it shows that you will be able to present the company positively in the future. Experience- Negatives Some things I do have to work on is to avoid saying “um” and wondering my eyes off into space while trying to figure out how I want to appropriately answer a question. Eye contact is a major when communicating with others; it shows that you are interested in what they are saying so I definitely need to work on maintaining eye contact more. Also, when saying ‘um’ it might sound like I am not sure or confident in...
