Brad Paisley once crooned ‘When you got my kind of stats, it’s hard to get a date. But I grow another foot, and I lose a bunch of weight every time I log in.’ While you may dismiss this as just another trivial pop song, it nevertheless captures the modern reality that technological knowledge has not just enabled Man to meet his needs, but to master and manipulate the world around him for his own benefit. While many traditionalists may criticize these radical new uses of technology as pursuing selfish personal improvements, many urbanites would find these necessary for their advancement in society. In my opinion, the various forms of technology have become imperative in addressing our needs more than our desires.

First and foremost, it is crucial to acknowledge that modern technology has addressed our most basic need for sustenance – food and water. Throughout history, scientific and technological advances have greatly impacted the agriculture industry. Scientists and researches have been at work to address the issue of scarcity of food and it is genetic modification that has allowed us to improve crop varieties by adding genes from other species. One successful application is the development of a corn hybrid, Bt corn, that is resistant to certain insect pests because of the addition of a gene from a natural soil bacterium. As a staple in the diets of both livestock and humans alike, the arrival of Bt corn in 1996 was very significant because it promised better production yield and easier harvests. Water purification technologies like Reverse Osmosis (RO) have also enabled Man to optimize the usage of scarce resources that are essential to the survival of our kind, by making available clean water to a larger community of people. Therefore, the developments in modern technology have indeed played a crucial role in addressing a dire need for more food and clean water for countries all over the world.

In addition, modern technology has like our world, evolved to meet the need for efficiency in our increasingly globalized world. Technology can result in greater productivity and output as it increases the efficiency of the worker. There is now, more than ever, the need for economies and industries need to operate in the most cost-efficient manner in order to remain competitive in our modern world. It is only by being productive will countries be able to survive and meet the needs of their citizens and this is where technology plays a vital role. Technological hardware, such as computer technology, along with its software enhances work efficiency as information can be processed and analysed at a faster rate. Painstaking manual tasks such as calculations and can now be done with greater accuracy and at a faster speed, resulting in higher productivity rates. This, in turn, allows markets to run more smoothly and gives countries the ability to compete on an international level to meet the needs of the people on the ground, by improving economic productivity. Hence, we can once again see that technology has evolved to address the similarly evolving needs of people.

Also, technology can be said to help us to keep in touch with loved ones and friends and improve the quality of our social life. While this may not have been a very prominent need in the past, it is currently growing in significance as more and more children are going overseas to pursue further education and spending long periods of time away from their families. It is only with the recent wave of globalization that living overseas has become so common and there is now a need for individuals to make use of technology to stay connected. Communication technology’s trademark is in its ability to transcend space and time at hyper speeds. Unlike previous times when children lived and worked in close proximity to their families, the phenomenon of globalization is forcing individuals out of their homelands in search of work and education. Thus, technological works such as network communications and mobile communications are becoming increasingly important to the individual. In this way, relations can be maintained online regardless of time zones and borders and deals with the individuals need for support and encouragement, especially in unfamiliar environments.

However, detractors against such technology may point to the widespread occurrence of individuals orchestrating everything on their social networking pages as a means of self-promotion as an aspect where technology has transformed to address our desires more than our needs. Users of Facebook, for example, may sometimes be driven to actively prune their profiles of unflattering words, ‘untag’ unflattering photos or even ‘unfriend’ unflattering friends. While they may argue that many youths now face the compulsion to reflect to the world a more perfect image of themselves to gain social standing based on personal agenda, it may signal a desperate cry to satisfy their inner need for attention. These acts may simply be a reflection for the need to feel secure and accepted within their social circles, and may point to an even more significant need to feel loved. Hence, technology has changed to suit the needs of the people in the present, though this may appear frivolous and unnecessary to those who grew up in the past.

In conclusion, not only does modern technology address our most basic needs, it has evolved rapidly to meet the needs of the modern world, which is becoming increasingly globalized. While there may have been little of these needs in the past, we must admit that the world has quickly evolved and there are many new challenges that the people of the 21st century have to face. Their needs, like the world, have transformed over time, but are still met by technology. Therefore, in my opinion, modern technology addresses our needs more than our desires.

...nowadays our society has enjoyed the benefits of having modern technology. We are blessed with modern tools, which could perform to what seemed to be an impossible task in the past like retrieving information in a matter of seconds. However, this often comes with unforseen and undesirable consequences defeating the very objective in the first place. To my mind, modern technology is a bane than a boon. It cannot be denied that the technological improvement brings forth to us some advantages. Firstly, it helps man communicate local or oversea by writing email, telephone or mobile. Secondly, the modern tools also support man in business and studying. It makes better condition to fulfill tasks faster and more convenient. For example, a student spend less time searching information and documents by clicking mouse on google rather than is stuck with many books in library. A business man can deal with his job by using laptop and internet whereas he can still enjoy holiday with his family. Nevertheless, for every solution technology provides twice as many problems are likely to cause. The modern technology is to some extent underlying causes of negative things in our society. Technology has changed the way we as humans live; it changes our understanding of the way things work and changes the way we interact with one another. In science, our goal is to get further and understand everything there is to understand about our earth and our capabilities with technology.   But the way we are viewing technology now these days is making our life more efficient for us. When you look around what do you see? You see certain individuals walking around with a phone up to their ear, holding laptop cases, or just listening to music from their Ipod. From a Christian perspective, technology must be judged for its value in realizing the good and fulfilling the moral lessons that Jesus taught. When it comes to people, technology is important in providing food, clothing, shelter and supplies. Through technology random helpful people were able to send books to Africa to support a school ran by the Peace Corps by airplanes. Modern Technology as Instructional Material

...world evolves, the technology is also evolving and we can’t deny the fact that it is happening also to education. One of the examples is the modern technologies used by some of the teachers as their instructional materials. (Richards) Before, children were taught in a rigid and stereotyped way. Teachers used authentic or created materials as their tool in teaching the learners. Nowadays, there are lots of instructional materials to be used in teaching. There are new trends on language teaching and this is by the use of modern technology as their instructional material. These instructional materials include laptops, LCD projector, speech laboratory, power point presentation, tablets, etc. By the use of it, learners can relate to their discussion. Instructional materials serves as the basis for match of the language input learners and the language practice that occurs in the classroom. Anthem: The Role Of Technology In Modern Society

...Technology, while integral to our modern, everyday lives, has not always been where it is. Technology in prehistoric times was nothing more than simple torches or sharpened rock bound to sticks, and a future with encyclopaedias that fit in our pocket or the ability to travel the world in a matter of days was inconceivable, and the visionaries who dreamed of these things were simply written off as mad in such times. While the unified ‘We’ featured in Anthem is hardly as primeval, they are still far from even our present and even farther from other fictional futures, as their ‘perfect and equal’ system has slowed any progress to a dreadful crawl. The design of this society inherently hinders technological progression, and is decades behind the present in terms of technological ability and eons behind the capabilities of other imaginary dystopian worlds. Any sort of advance for humanity, beneficial or otherwise, is strictly forbidden as long as it is the effort of a lone man. An invention, the creation of which must be overseen by many for it not to be considered a cardinal sin, must go through an egregiously sluggish process in which every ranking leader in the world must approve of the invention. After...

Traditional vs Modern Science and Technology.. .

...meaning of science and technology is viewed in different ways. In its broad term technology is dealing with the use and knowledge of humanity’s tools and crafts. It is also a knowledge of using tools and machines to do tasks efficiently. We often use technology to control the world in which we live and it is developed to extend human capabilities. Technology is an innovation, change, or modification of the natural environment to satisfy perceived human needs and wants. we can also view technology in four aspects. First, technology is defined as technics which refer to material products of human making or fabrication. It refers to all material artifacts produced by a person or group in society. Second, technology is viewed as a technology which refers to the complex of knowledge, methods, materials and constituent parts used in making certain kind of technic. it means that not only one technology is use in making a certain kind of technic. technology is also a form of human cultural activity so it is viewed as a distinctive form of human practice like other proffesions which is pratice by technologists like mechanists and engineers. Lastly, technology as a total societal enterprise is the complex of knowledge, people, skills, organizations, facilities, technichs, physical resources, methods, and technologies that taken together and in relationship to one another are devoted to the research, development, production, and operation of technics. in this sense technology is viewed as a whole...

What Does It Mean to Be Human in an Age of Modern Technology?

...What Does it Mean to be Human in an Age of Modern Technology? What does it mean to be human in the age of modern technology? Many feel that technology is only a useful tool and has not changed what it means to be human. Others argue that today’s technological advances have become so rapid, sophisticated and ingrained in daily life it is taking away from the interest, welfare and humanistic nature of our society. Most all do agree that technology has certainly played a role in humanity’s social and behavioral progress throughout history. However, to what extent technology really drives the development of our social and behavioral changes can elicit a heated discussion. Humans are driven, curious creatures that seek to solve problems and have a need for social interactions. As well they desire some form of system of belief (though not necessarily religious in nature) and aspire to be part of something collective or feel a sense of purpose to life. Countless studies provide that human behavior arises out of the interaction between individuals and their environment. Although environments do influence human behavior, many contend the basic tenets of humanity such as compassion, the need to have connected relationships and the desire to improve upon our lives have not changed in the face of technology. However, it is clear that human attitudes and expectations today are certainly very different than even several generations ago. Much of which, is a direct result of technological...

...Emerging Technology Paper Week 5 Assignment Anthony M. Garrett BIS/221 Instructor Keith Hopkins November 23, 2015 The emerging technology that I will be discussing is the military grade smart phone. The smart phone has been around for quite a while now but has yet to be introduced for government use. The blackberry has been the phone of use for the last 10 years. This is due to the simplicity of the use as well as how inexpensive the phone is. Due to its platform it is a phone that is not and cannot be used to the capabilities needed by the war fighter. The introduction of the smart phone is going to revolutionize the administrative and mission driven military. The google platform is going to open up document formation and implementation as well as PowerPoint. You cannot forget the importance of the GPS feature as well as the ability to transfer all information from one phone to the other simply by touching the two phones together. You also must look at the storage capabilities, and the ability to wipe, or erase all information remotely in the case that the phone is compromised. Other benefits that will come from this is the picture taking and processing capabilities that is not offered by the blackberry. Needless to say the ability to use these phones will greatly out do the benefits of the blackberry. Now we will discuss the drawbacks to the smartphone as opposed to the blackberry. First off the ability to ensure that the phones are used only for work will greatly...

Modern Technology

...Today’s world is a global village. Everyone is connected to one another in this vast network generated by the Internet. As said by Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher of communication theory, “The new electronic independence re-creates the world in the image of a global village.” This electronic independence is inherently dependent upon the Internet. It illuminates the lives of thousands of people by spreading knowledge internationally, thereby making us global citizens. In the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts among people were restricted by long distance, nationality and/or religion. But now, even these barriers cannot stop the flow of information and knowledge. The new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts. Online social networks are created by websites such as Facebook, which has emerged as a giant in this social world. So how do these networks affect our education? How do they influence the lives of students? Humans are social animals. We always like to remain in some group or another, and we prefer to follow what this group does. All of our traditions and cultures are the product of this group-oriented facet of human nature. A well-known American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, stated in his “Theory of Motivation” that the social need of human beings is the third most important requirement after our physical and safety needs — the third tier in his hierarchy of needs. Even our self-esteem comes after this social dependence. This is the...

Modern Technology and Communication

...Modern technology and communication Nowadays modern technology modifies traditional forms of knowledge and communication and promotes cognitive, social, ethical and political transformations. According to various scientists the digital era is creating an anthropological change that modifies thought processes, the relationship with reality, the ways by which human being relate with environment, with himself and others. This evolution is characterized by biotechnology that, applied to communication, creates a new interaction among people, thanks to web connections. Thus, technology provokes a change in terms of thought, language and education.1)The impact of digital era in the cultural sphere could be viewed in a pessimistic light because it promotes the phenomenon of globalization, typically associated with the destruction of cultural identities, victims of the accelerating encroachment of a homogenized, consumer culture. This view tends to interpret globalization as an extension of western cultural imperialism and to consider it as a marginalizing practice. A central issue concerns the relationship between power, media and news media. News media offer innovative modalities of communication and they can become tools of cultural and political, economical domination. For instance, Western nations impose their cultural values on popular culture. Critics of globalization call this "cultural imperialism," because the West promotes its culture as having more worth, or being more...
