Smoking: The truth is written on the box

How many of you have ever looked at the outside of a pack of cigarettes? You probably noticed there is a surgeon’s warning written on it stating that smoking is a hazard risk. A written statement that smoking is harmful, yet you see people huddled up outside work smoking or out on the drive with cigarette smoke coming out their car windows. Would it be a surprise that secondhand smoke is now a cause for cancer as the direct smoking? Smoking is the number one health hazard in our country. The one thing that I have learned and will explain is that there really is no gain to smoking and quite a few losses. People start smoking cigarettes as an escape from problems or stresses and some people choose to start because of peer pressure or the false image of looking cool. No matter the reason you start smoking effects everyone in some form whether it be by increasing health risks in the smokers as well as people around such as other adults and children, the cost of smoking steadily increases, and there are organizations and plans out to help smokers quit.

People have different reasons they choose to start smoking but if they put the reasons next to the after effects that smoking can cause they will see that the effects outweigh the causes. Looking at them makeup of a cigarette explains how these risks are increased in those who smoke. Cigarettes contain additive called nicotine which produces the effect that draws them into addiction. The chemical makeup of the smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including 60 known to cause cancer. Some of the chemicals identified are cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde, methanol, acetylene, and ammonia. The smoke also contains tar and carbon monoxide. (What in tobacco is harmful?, 2013, para.1) Carbon monoxide is the

To Kill a Moking Bird

...Choose any 3 characters from the first half of the novel and discuss how they have a positive influence in Maycomb. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays a very distinct difference in the character that are “good” and those that are “bad” this often comes over in the way Scout or Atticus view a certain character. There are many positive influences in Maycomb and one of them is Calpurnia. Although Atticus does not see her as a motherly figure, I believe that she views herself as the womanly influence in their lives as she is loving towards the children, but often, can be strict and firm to teach them what is right or wrong. She has always been there for both children, especially Scout because they lost their mother early in their lives and because of this I feel that Scout and Jem do not Calpurnia as either black or white and this means that they respect her and love her a lot. An example of this is in Chapter twelve when Calpurnia is taking the children to church with her and she refers to them as “my children” and wants people to know that she looks after them. She also makes sure that they are clean before church however, this is partly showing self interest as she wants to be seen as motherly towards the children and if they look nice, it will reflect well on her peers. Another example of Calpurnia showing her love for the children is when there is a “mad dog” and she tells them to go inside because she is worried about them and wants them to be safe. Calpurnia...

Smoking

...moking tobacco is both a physical addiction and a psychological habit. The nicotine from cigarettes provides a temporary, and addictive, high. Eliminating that regular fix of nicotine will cause your body to experience physical withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Because of nicotine’s “feel good” effect on the brain, you may also have become accustomed to smoking as a way of coping with stress, depression, anxiety, or even boredom. At the same time, the act of smoking is ingrained as a daily ritual. It may be an automatic response for you to smoke a cigarette with your morning coffee, while taking a break from work or school, or during your commute home at the end of a long day. Perhaps friends, family members, and colleagues smoke, and it has become part of the way you relate with them. To successfully quit smoking, you’ll need to address both the addiction and the habits and routines that go along with it. Your Personal Stop Smoking Plan While some smokers successfully quit by going cold turkey, most people do better with a plan to keep themselves on track. A good plan addresses both the short–term challenge of quitting smoking and the long–term challenge of preventing relapse. It should also be tailored to your specific needs and smoking habits. Questions to ask yourself Take the time to think of what kind of smoker you are, which moments of your life call for a cigarette, and why. This will help you to identify which tips, techniques or therapies may be most beneficial...
