Mongolian Culture: The Mongol's Way Of Life

Mongolian’s had a very simple, yet developed, way of life. They were nomadic people who hunted and gathered food, while also being fierce warriors who conquered everyone they came across. When they weren’t conquering other tribes and cities, they were discovering and developing their own way of life and culture. The Mongol´s way of life is misunderstood and not portrayed accurately in history books.
The Mongols were nomadic people who hunted and gathered their food. Because of their nomadic lifestyle, they were not able to plant crops and have farms. Their food diversity depended on their geographic location. Despite these differences, their main staple consisted of meat and dairy products from their animals. They categorized their food into two groups, white and red foods. White foods were any dairy products and vegetables, while red foods was any meat or animal fats. From their cows, they enjoyed milk, cheese, and yogurt. When it came to meat, they ate whichever animals were nearby; most commonly, it was beef, mutton, or pork. Allowing each clan separately to choose their own government hierarchy allowed for people to advance through the ranks of power through merits, rather than the traditional advancement through a hereditary monarchy, or handed down from family member to family member. The basic unit of the government was the clan, which composed of related families. From there, several clans joined to make a tribe, who then met in even larger groups called Kurultais. These large groups held meeting to decide important decisions and to elect tribal leaders. When Genghis Khan was elected as the Great Khan, he invented new positions of administrative and military positions to advise him on important matters.
