Revenge is the Dish that is Served Chilled
What is the potential precursor of the situation that would cause one man to wish the death of the other? In the old times it could be even an awkward unreasoned statement or joke that could place people on the warpath. In the short story of Edgar Allan Poe the offended villain Montresor is planning the murder of his recent fellow the Fortunato. The used language of the short story depicts Montressor’s nature and presents to the reader the cold blooded and cynical villain.
The course of the short story reveals the cold blooded nature of Montresor. Fortunato, the victim, despite the nature of his poetic name that could symbolize the fortune, had a misfortune to offend the tactical killer Montresor. The villain of the short story was brought to the readers eyes as a character that is planning the revenge very scrupulously and timely without the excess of emotions. One of the signs of his frightening insanity and meanness is the fact that “neither by word nor deed had he given Fortunato cause to doubt his good will. He …show more content…
Firstly, Montresor secretly celebrates revenge inside his mind and revels with nemesis. When Fortunato exclaims that he “shall not die of a cough", Montresor musteriously replies "True --true" (Poe 167). Secondly, the black humor can be seen in his reply to Fortunato’s question about Freemasons. “"It is this," I answered, producing from beneath the folds of my roquelaire a trowel” ironized Montresor about the sign of mason’s (Poe 168). There is a secret meaning to this trowel in eyes of Montresor; it is symbolizing his power in the given situation. Thirdly, he puts a special meaning in the motto of his family “Nemo me impune lacessit”, which for him is the motivation to action and has a secret meaning of snake Fortunato under his heel (Poe

...Raegan Stevens Mr. Musick/ Mrs. Lynch ENG10 October 30, 2017 The Cask of the Amontillado Theme Essay The Cask of the Amontillado is a short story written by Edgar Allen Poe. The story has two main characters, Fortunado and Montresor. It all starts when Fortunado dishonors the Montresor name. Montresor hears of this and is furious. Montresor decides he must have revenge. Since there is a town party, he tells the house staff he will be gone all evening, and he wishes for them to stay and work. Foreshodowing Fortunato

...Jonathon Criswell Essay 1 Assignment 3/14/2016 Foreshadowing Fortunato’s Fate in Cask of Amontillado Edgar Allan Poe introduces the readers with an unpleasant tale of revenge in The Cask of Amontillado. It is revealed by Montresor who confesses to the murder of his old friend Fortunato over fifty years ago. Montresor led Fortunato to the catacombs where he was entombed. Fortunato, is led into the catacomb to his impending death with the assurance of a magnificent sherry, amontillado. As Montresor pilots Fortunato deeper into the catacombs, Poe foreshadows the impending murder.  The word cask in Cask of Amontillado, is an abbreviation for the term casket. Fortunato is being led to his casket or final resting place in the catacombs. Elena Baraban, of “The Motive for Murder in “the Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe”, believes that “the whole imagery of the crypt suggests that the word “Amontillado” is a metaphor” (55). This is symbolic of the way Fortunato is killed. The title could easily have read “The Grave of Fortunato.”   Special importance is placed on Carnival in the story. Montresor saved his revenge until the Carnival celebration began, because it would be an excellent time to carry out his plan of revenge “during the supreme madness of the carnival season,” (Poe 227). Nothing is as it seems during the Carnival. People pretend to be something that they wish they could be. Carnival is an escape for the people. Many things happen at...

...Comparative Essay Final Michelle Rex LIT/210 8/17/12 There are so many stories that take twists and turns that you never realize where the story is heading. So many great authors have surprised us with stories of love and death. With writing a play or a short story there has to be key area that grabs the reader’s attention there have been many that have grabbed my attention but some so much more. When I compare the similarities of the two stories that I am about to write about they were written ages apart from each other but have so much in common to me. The stories are of young men who do something that is going to change their life for good and in the end could cause them to be known as an evil person. There are two men that I am about to write about that are going to make the decision of a life time and after they do there is no turning back to change what they did. The first story is of Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, this is a story of where man is being tempted by evil and is contemplating making a vow to evil. Young Goodman Brown is going to go on a journey, on this journey he must leave behind his wife. Not only will Brown himself be challenged on the trip, but Faith is also troubled by sleeping alone and is “afeard of herself.” Because Faith is Brown's wife, she brings to mind an earthly union that on this night will be interrupted. Faith is “aptly named,” however, because on a different level she also represents his spiritual faith. This indicates...

Edgar Allan Poe

...Edgar Allan Poe Essay 9. The mood of “The Cask of Amontillado” is one of rising horror. What descriptive details help produce this mood? “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, was about a man named Montresor who was seeking revenge on another man named Fortunato. Fortunato had insulted Montresor is some sort of way so he arrived at the carnival with a masterful and evil scheme to get rid of him. Throughout this story there are many events that make you gasp and sit on the edge of your seat. Horror is the mood in this graphic short story. One descriptive detail in the story that is filled of horror was when they arrived at Monstresor’s house and they explored his vaults. It was filled with dead corpses. While I was reading this I felt a little disturbed. If I was the one walking through multiple dead bodies lying on the ground I would feel very uneasy and petrified. This event showed horror. Another example of a horrid scene was when both of the men walked into Monstresor’s crypt. A crypt is usually a place where people are buried and they contain coffins. Fortunato had a little too much to drink so he didn’t exactly notice his unpleasant surroundings. Also, there were human bones on the walls. Lastly, the most horrifying, descriptive scene in this short story was the ending. Montresor wanted revenge on Fortunato so bad that he was willing to take his life. He trapped Fortunato inside the wall and began to place stones over top of him. Since...

Use Of Dramatic Irony In Montresor

...Jackie Manriquez Mr. Barry Sr English 30 November 2017 Mood Analysis Essay Edgar Allen Poe uses a variety of literary devices to create a disturbing mood for the reader. Throughout the whole story Edgar Allen Poe uses Verbal and Dramatic Irony to build suspense to the characters in the story. One literary device Poe Allen uses to create a disturbing mood is tone. Allen Poe overall tone is unsettling and ominous. He uses irony and a chilling humor to create a feeling of uneasiness in the audience.” We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together on the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors”(2). Critical Essay: Elements of Literature in Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado"

...Critical Essay: Elements of Literature in Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” Is a well written shorty story filled with many significant literary elements. Firstly we will write about the plot, the overall summary of the story, and the main themes, the central ideas of this tale. The plot of "The Cask of Amontillado" is a great account of vengeance. The assassin promises “revenge” upon Fortunato for an “insult.” The main theme revolves around the assassin plans to pursue vengeance in support of his family motto: "Nemo me impune lacessit. This means “no one cuts (attacks) me with impunity.” On the coat of arms of his family, which bears this motto, looks "a huge human foot d'or, in a field of azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are embedded in the heel.” Thus reflects the theme of vengeance because the assassin’s plan of revenge on Fortunato for an insult. Secondly we have characterization, the personalities of the characters of the characters produced. The true focus lies upon the assassin, the wicked Montresor. Seeing Poe’s Struggle with Alcoholism

...Seeing Poe’s Struggle with Alcoholism through his Stories “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Black Cat” Jen Andalou Edgar Allen Poe’s stories “The Black Cat” and “The Cask of Amontillado” are among his most popular. Both of these stories can be read on several different levels causing everyone who reads them to come up with a totally different interpretations, yet none of the interpretations I have read seem satisfying. The two stories at first seem simple enough, with “The Black Cat” reading as a darker version of “The Telltale Heart”, this time with the conscience given a physical form, and “The Cask of Amontillado” as a chilling tale of revenge exacted told as a deathbed confession. Yet these simple interpretations leave too many questions. Many reviewers unfairly single Poe’s works out as coming directly from his subconscious, ignoring not only how carefully Poe chose his words and phrases but also the sources that inspired the stories (E A Poe Society, “Autobiography”). That being said, I think Poe did deliberately use his stories as a kind of self-therapy thus revealing at least a little about himself. A large constant in Poe’s life was his fight with alcohol, which made itself known in his writing in many ways. The main theme of Edgar Allen Poe’s stories “The Black Cat” and “The Cask of Amontillado” centers on the narrators’ attempts to wall off, or suppress, his alcoholism, with the narrator succeeding over alcoholism in “The Cask of Amontillado”...

Setting

...Carla Muñiz Professor Zhelezcheva ENG 102 Essay 1 9 / 21 /13 Cultural Heritage & Literary Settings For the literacy work I’ve chosen to go to a real location and take notes as observed to compare and contrast with the literary setting of my choice. As for the location I chose Coney Island in comparison with the Carnival Feast in “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allan Poe. Judging by my experience in Coney Island, I can state that there is an abundance of cultural heritage in that specific location. Coney Island gave me a perspective; on how cultural heritage consists of a unity with joyful events that bring different types of ethnicities, art, music, and overall culture together in one location. Coney Island is a very big attraction, for the most part known by many New Yorkers and tourists. “Coney” has very big, loud, and extravagant rides starting from the most famous/oldest ride the “Cyclone” and “Wonder Wheel” and most recently added amongst the hall of fame the “Polar Express”. To their race tracks, bumper cars (a place in a dark room filled with neon blue, red, yellow and green lights, my personal favorite). It was night time so everything was lit up. I imagine this is what Edgar Allen Poe meant when he mentioned the carnival season in “The Cask of Amontillado.” The carnival setting briefly described in the story of “The Cask of Amontillado”, isn’t much different from the scenery I observed in Coney Island. Edgar Allan Poe described scenery of a...
