Moriarty Technologies have developed a Decision Support System to analyse Steam Age Emporiums sales data and different business options in order to determine the best case scenario for the business. It was established that the best business strategy for your company would be to adopt Store Recommended Mark-up as your pricing method, Monsieur Bonacieux Transport as your freight solution and Brunei as your country of import. Additionally, recommendations for the business to offer discounts, free freight delivery and to monitor fluctuations in exchange rates have been made.

A Decision Support System (DSS) is an information system built to support the phases of a users decision making process (Mora, Forgionne & Gupta 2003, p. preface). It provides assistance in manipulating and evaluating large amounts of detailed data to choose from many different courses of action (Baltzan, Lynch & Blakey 2013). These features make it the appropriate tool for this project as over 1000 rows and 29 columns of data needed to be manipulated and analysed to create 8 different scenarios to allow the best decision to be made.

The DDS was utilised to analyse sales data to determine that the Store Mark-up type would be the most beneficial option for the business. Analysis of the ‘Selling Price’ column of the Report was conducted to ensure that other factors such as discounts would not affect the outcomes. The DDS determined that the Store Recommended Mark-up would generate $169 559.42 versus the Supplier Recommended Mark-up amount of $164 707.86. Based on the addition of the ‘Selling Price’ of the sales data this would result in $4851.56 more income being generated by the Store Mark-up option. Additionally, when comparing the 4 Scenarios with Store Mark-up selected the Sales and Profit amounts were all higher than their counterpart Scenarios with the Supplier Mark-up selected.

...additional cost associated with these new innovations. For this reason, HP experienced a decrease in revenue due to unplanned operational costs. HP has worked diligently towards meeting and exceeding customer expectations. Unfortunately, managing millions of new products lead to increased cost and inefficiency. HP recognized that its company was providing millions of choices for customer satisfaction without a high return on investment. HP’s marketing and sales departments requested more SKU’s, more features and more configurations to meet consumer interests. However the supply chain managers wanted less complexity and were interested in more predictable order cycle times. HP needed to implement a fact-based, data-driven tool to improve decision making. HP developed a team of individuals internally and externally from consultancies and universities to help with the challenges the company faced. This team developed a process for evaluating new products for introduction, created a tool for prioritizing existing products in a portfolio, and developed an algorithm that solved problems faster than previous technologies (Turban, Sharda, Delen. (2011)). The team developed a pre-launch and post-launch plan to assess whether product ideas were great enough investments to bring forth returns and maximize profits. The team also developed a Revenue Coverage Optimization (RCO) tool to manage product portfolios as sales data became available. The RCO algorithm...

...Evolution of Information Systems (Relevant to AAT Examination Paper 8: Principles of Auditing and Management Information Systems) David Chow FCCA, FCPA, CPA (Practising) This article discusses the evolution of information systems, levels of management decision-making and information systems that enhance the value of information. Students are encouraged to understand the reasons for the development of an information system and its replacement; these will help you identify the benefits and limitations of each type of information system. From EDP to MIS Until the 1960s, the role of most information systems was simple. They were mainly used for electronic data processing (EDP),purposes such as transactions processing, record-keeping and accounting. EDP is often defined as the use of computers in recording, classifying, manipulating, and summarizing data. It is also called transaction processing systems (TPS), automatic data processing, or information processing. Transaction processing systems – these process data resulting from business transactions, update operational databases, and produce business documents. Examples: sales and inventory processing and accounting systems. In the 1960s, another role was added to the use of computers: the processing of data into useful informative reports. The concept of management information systems (MIS) was born. This new role focused on developing business applications that provided managerial end users with predefined management reports that...

It Systems

...Introduction to Information Systems There is a structure that comes with information systems, ones that will be beneficial to our workers and to us as business owners. I will cover both that I feel will be the most applicable to our record store. I feel that we need multiple systems that will benefit us with accessibility and understanding of the systems, The transaction processing system is the bottom part of the structure to use for the employees because it has many different unique uses. The TPS can collect, store, modify, and retrieve the transactions of an organization. It stores data in certain files that are able to be seen only by select individuals. There will be worker files only accessible by employees as well as manager and CEO files that only we can access. It offers many other useful tools such as rapid processing, batch processing, and real time processing. Management information systems are above the transaction processing system. These systems don’t deal with the day to day data in needing and operating our record store such as the TPS. The MIS provides information that is needed to organize and manage organizations efficiently and effectively. MIS involve three primary resources: people, technology and decision making. The systems main purpose is to analyze operational activities in the organization. It can show if our plans our reaching out goals and allows our managers to supervise over the TPS. I feel this next one isn’t going to be needed...

Determining Databases

...Determining Databases and Data Communications Laura Dowell BIS/320 March 18, 2013 Martin Mueller Determining Databases and Data Communications A manager in today’s business environment must have the skills and knowledge to play a role in a variety of departments. Even if he or she is not an expert in the information technology field, a basic understanding of the tools and terminology is a must-have. This understanding can be useful in clearing out some of the options which are obviously untenable and narrow decisions to a limited number of viable options. The scenarios below demonstrate how a basic knowledge of software application and network design can simplify decisions that would perplex many individuals. SCENARIO 1 In the first scenario a marketing assistant for a consumer electronics company is responsible for managing the displays used at industry trade shows. This person must identify the necessary components and equipment and make sure they get shipped to the trade show in a timely manner. Once the shipment arrives at the trade show, the assistant is responsible for verifying the condition of each item and overseeing the set-up and functionality of the display. At the conclusion of the trade show, the assistant makes sure that each piece ships back to the company and is put back into stock at the warehouse in the same condition as when it originally left. This assistant is also in charge of following up on any problems resulting from shipping damage. There...

It utilizes data, provides an easy-to-use interface, and allows for the decision maker's own insights." For Little (1970), a DSS is a "model-based set of procedures for processing data and judgments to assist a manager in his decision-making." Moore and Chang (1980) define DSS as extendible systems capable of supporting ad hoc data analysis and decision modeling, oriented toward future planning, and used at irregular, unplanned intervals. importance of DSS to assist in high-level decision-making, assist academic advising staff, improve the quality and timeliness of marketing decisions, and medical diagnosis process; and current issues of DSS where decision-making as the most important activities for human beings, Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs), several...

Decision Support Systems

...President Barack Obama used a Decision Support System called Neighbor to Neighbor during his 2008 campaign. This DSS contained names, addresses, issues of interest and data to that particular voter, and past voting records of each voter that were undecided in the campaign. This system allowed Obama’s staff members to create effective customized speeches, fliers, etc. that would ultimately convince that particular voter to vote for Obama (Decision Support…). Decision support systems are being used to influence presidential elections. Mitt Romney for example began a secretive data-mining project, to look through American’s information such as, purchasing history and church attendance in order to identify likely wealthy donors. For his election data-mining project, this will rely on thousands of expensive databases that are legally bought/sold behind the scenes by corporations. This includes credit accounts, families and children, voter registrations, charitable contributions, property tax records, and survey responses. This database combined with marketing data creates a psychographic data analysis, which then flushes out Americans consumer behavior and habits. Decision Support Services (DSS) is technology that is available to turn your sales data and statistics into efficient management tools and organized reports. One useful DSS offerings is provided via IMSMART which allows your company to customize reports based off of the information you’re interested in. IMSMART offers...
