Number six, in a group of diseases called mucopolysaccharidoses, is Morquio syndrome. In the movie “The Mighty”, an imaginative boy named Kevin Dillon, has this terrible disease that gets worse and worse as the small imagine-er grows. But does this movie accurately show the symptoms of Morquio syndrome? First let’s learn what this syndrome is, then I will show the symptoms, and then see if the movie “The Mighty”, accurately showed Kevin's disease in the movie. Morquio syndrome is a rare inherited birth defect that happens in every 200,000 births. What happens is your body does not not produce enough enzymes to break down sugar or your enzymes don’t work normally. There are two types of this syndrome. Type A is when an enzyme called galactosamine 6-sulfate is missing, then type B is when there isn’t enough of the enzyme beta-galactosidase. So in this case the body can no longer help build bone, cartilage, eye corneas, skin, and connective tissue. Thus causes the bones to stop growing, while the organs continue to grow. This can result in death in an early age. Characteristics for this syndrome are, short stature or a very short torso, abnormal bone and spine development, bell shaped ribs, hyper mobile joints or double jointed, large head, widely spaced teeth, scalp veins or a bulging forehead, and possible heart and vision …show more content…
When I first watched the movie I didn’t understand his condition and how fatal it could actually be, and how normal some of these symptoms could look. Kevin has glasses, assuming he has vision problems, crutches because he is unable to move from the waist down, and if you look closely a curved spine. In the movie “The Mighty”, I think that the directors and filmmakers did accurately show Morquio syndrome in Kevin, and while how he died was sudden and sad, I can know say I understand the circumstances better than I did
