Motivational Methods
There is much to making the workplace into a successful team. In order to do this there is a lot of effort, patience and understanding that must take place. To make the workplace successful, certain protocols and ideals and even morals have to be instilled in the workplace. Each member of the team may have their own set of goals that motivate them. It would be extremely wise to try to implement those goals into the workplace for example if one team member has the goal of productivity and another has a goal of better service, these are goals that would benefit the workplace so it would be great to implement those goals into the workplace. To make these goals a reality the employer or leader of the team can offer incentives such as bonuses or special lunches. In order to build the team successfully proper leadership is important; however the team members should still have some sort of independence so that the team can operate effectively on its own.
According to www.HumanResource.about.com, there are 12 Cs for team building; one of the twelve C’s is culture. It is important for employees to see the production being made to better the team so that it does not feel offensive when these changes are being made. In this case culture does not mean where you are from or your background but a leader that has the team’s best interest at heart that will guide the team correctly. Most companies have a leader of some sort whether it is a manager or team lead or even a shift supervisor, all of which are responsible for leading their team. One way to get the team involved and for the team to have the desire to get involved would be to make the work fun and to get each team member involved. Another C this site mentioned is communication which is a vital part of leading any team. Communication is important in any relationship whether it be professional or a personal relationship. When communication is not met there are offenses that take place and the relationship struggles because people begin to feel that they are not important. No team can succeed without communication. It is not enough just to say what needs to be done but also listen to the members of the team and address their issues as well. Another one of the C’s that is vital in the workplace is creative innovation. It is important to encourage the employees or other members of the team to be creative in their work and show their individuality through their work. In any business there is room for improvement so one employee may come up with a better, more efficient way of doing something. By giving the team members freedom to be creative this could benefit the employer and possibly even save them money. If the leader allows the team to be creative, the team will respect the leader and be supportive of future goals. According to Caitlin Friedman’s and Kimberly Yorio’s book “The Girl’s Guide to Being a Boss, an interview with they interviewed Dianne Nolan, the women’s head basketball coach at Fairfield University in Connecticut to see what she does today and in the past to get her team to trust and respect her with their problems. Ms. Nolan states “an open door policy and the players know when they are in my office and I close the door, the following discussion is important and confidential.” She then continues to state “cite specific examples of behavior that lead her to believe the team is not coming first in the player’s mind and will then outline steps to take so that she can improve her behavior and begin to shoe her support of team’s goals” (Friedman & Yorio, 2006, p. 65). An example of this is also quoted in a book titled Talent is overrated written by Geoff Colvin. He writes about the US Olympic 1980 hockey team that beat the Soviets at Lake Placid. In this book he begin to quote from the movie Miracle “Brook’s assistant looks at the coach’s roster and objects that he has left out many of the country’s greatest college players. Brook’s responds “I’m not looking for the best players, Craig. I am looking for the right players” (Colvin, 2008, p. 138). It is important to see what team members are involved in what and reward them accordingly so they continue to be involved.
Including the staff in events also motivates the team as well. Team events would be company dinners or picnics for example. This is also a great way to get the families of the team members involved as well. These events allow people to converse that would not otherwise, which would make the team a closer group of people. Another aspect the leader can do for the team is to offer contest such as employee of the month to motivate the employees or team members to better their performance. This would not work in all teams as the competition could create problems between the members but in some situations this would motivate the members. It is important to discuss what needs to be done to qualify for this and maybe offer to only have the same employee three times in a year so other employees do not feel left out or that it is pointless to try. Incentives such as this are proved to motivate team members to give their best each day no matter what is going on in their personal lives. Heathfield (n.d.), “No matter what you call your team-based improvement effort: continuous improvement, total quality, lean manufacturing or self-directed work teams, you are striving to improve results for customers”.
While there is no specific way to train and motivate teams in the workplace and other organizations, there is certainly a great need for teams to be productive and supportive for their organization. In order to ensure that the team will be successful it is first important to have the proper leadership. It is also important to set appropriate and achievable goals for the team and put them into place. If the goals are not seen as achievable the team may not even try and the incentive program will backfire on the leader. The role of the leader is a great responsibility because the members of team look to that person for proper guidance and more effective ways to complete the goals as well as the rewards for a job well done. If the team has a good leader that is able to do these things then they will support the leader and give their best.

In order to successfully motivate employees, the manager must be able to employ motivation methods (Levoy, 2007, p. 118). Luckily, we are presented with motivational methods to assist with this task. An incorrect presumption about the staff’s motivations can prove ineffective (Thompson, Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). Motivation is a function of internal factors, external factors and the needs of the staff members (Thompson, Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). When using an intrinsic reward, it can be as simple as including the employee in a decision making discussion. A cash bonus for job performance would be an example of an extrinsic reward. By promoting an employee, the manager will meet their self-actualization need (Thompson, Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). Skinner, Maslow and Herzberg are just a few theorists who have provided the management with theories that can be used to motivate employees. However, finding motivational methods that will work on the employees can be just as hard.
