The interactionist perspective is one of the major theoretical perspectives within sociology. It focuses on the concrete details of what goes on among individuals in everyday life. (Sociology.about.com)
From the view of interactionist perspectives, members of society are learning the social meanings attached to certain words. Human are using symbols to create meaning, followed by develop and rely upon in the process of social interaction. Therefore, the meaning is differing depends on how the society defines and responds to those symbols. Through the formal and informal interaction with others, we are learning the meaning and adapting to our daily life.
In the movie, “Ice Kacang Puppy Love”, nickname is always attached to our main and sub-character. The society is giving a meaning to the symbol (nickname) and interpreting through daily interaction. For details, when “Botak” is walking around the town, the old or young also called him as “Botak”. There are some of the others symbol such as “Fighting fish”, “Prince Charming” and “Dinosaur”. In that situation, everyone knows and recognises the identity to him. According to the Mead’s view, social life and communication between people are possible only when we understand and can use a common language (Wood, 1997).
Besides, according to the interactionist, verbal and non-verbal communications play an important role in our daily life. Good communication is the foundation of successful relationships, both personal and professional.
For the former, every day we are utilizing multiple forms of verbal communication to smoothen our daily task. Whether between individuals or groups, we are expressing our emotions, create collaboratively and expand our minds through the verbal communication.
