Mr. Halloway In Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes

Halloway undergoes a spiritual journey; from a character who is battling against the old man he believes himself to be, to the epiphany that he is infact very youthful. Bradbury relates the importance of idealism and truth in this individual's life. In the novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes, the author uses Mr. Halloway to show a prime example of idealism, specifically in the form of Mr. Halloway yearning to regain his youth. In essence, he reveals the truth about Halloway’s belief in one’s innocence and how it is not determined by age, emphasising that it is merely a state of mind. The way that Bradbury described his physical being, clearly demonstrated that his aging body continuously haunts him. During multiple instances, Halloway is overcome with a deep sense of envy as he watches his young son Will. Although he undoubtedly loves his son, he finds himself envious of Will and his youthful innocence. Watching Will and Jim play reminds Mr Halloway of the truth in his old age. Will also has to remind himself and others that Mr. Halloway is not his “ grandfather, not far-wandering, ancient uncle, as some might think”, but in fact his father. Not only is Mr. Halloway aware of his old age, but it is a shared sentiment amongst the other characters as well. Although Charles Halloway wants to regain his youth, he is certain that it is impossible in the material world, which is holding him back from realizing his truth. To overcome this battle within, he reveals his deepest thoughts in spoken words, attempting to understand the truths in his thoughts . Mr halloway subconsciously knows that there is still some of his boyhood left within him. Loving someone will help a person make the biggest shifts that are needed in their lives, and Halloways love for Will is what helps him to connect with his inner bravery. When the Dust Witch joins Mr Dark, Halloway quickly realizes that she wouldn’t be able to find where exactly the boys were without her heightened ability to recognize the presence of others, so he blows the smoke of cigar in her face. When Mr Dark asks him who is name is, he hesitates, but still shows how brave he’s learned to be. “ Halloway. Work in the library. Drop by sometime. “ Now that he is brave, his personality is changing rapidly. Rather, his personality isn’t changing, he is just starting to show his true colours. Everyone’s true colours show eventually. Point being that, those colours were always there. Mr Halloway always had that inner boyhood but it just took him a while to come to that realization. Halloway protects both Will and Jim with elegance, and fearlessness. He gets left behind, all alone to be killed by the Witch, but at that point Mr. halloway realizes the truth. He realizes that he is an old man, yet a youthful fifty four old filled with energy, bravery, and initiative.
