Mr. Mom
As I sat through frustration of rush hour traffic, I received a text message from my best friend who is a male. The text message read “What’s a good age to start wearing tampons?” My sarcasm immediately kicked in and I almost replied back “Whenever you think you’re ready.” However knowing this is probably another one of those sensitive subjects for him concerning his daughter, whom he has raised alone since soon after her birth, I figured I better answer seriously. I responded “Whenever she’s comfortable.” As usual he replied “Ok, Just thought I’d ask.” You see my friend is one of the many men that have challenged the stereotype that has been placed upon them of being absentee or dead beat fathers once their relationship ends with the mothers. This is proving to no longer be status quo. You see I have several male friends who are raising their children, mostly girls, alone. Thus we now have a growing number of “absentee or deadbeat” mothers in our society.
According to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there is a significant rise in the number of single fathers raising kids. Specifically, the census data shows that the rise in families led by single fathers has outpaced the rise in single-mother families for the first time since 1970. Today, there is an increase of 14 percent of single-dad households. The number of single-mother households only increased by roughly 3.2 percent in the past 10 years. Gone are the days of family court automatically granting custody to the mother just because “That’s the way it’s always been.” Fathers are now challenging and exercising their parental rights. They are now demanding the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of their children.
The reasons for fathers being granted custody vary from things as bad as child neglect and abandonment, to something as simple as the mother wants to pursue a career. Some mothers chose drugs or another man over their own children, others chose the desire for the corner office with a window and others just don’t chose at all and leave the fathers hands tied because she has just disappeared. Whatever the case maybe we can no longer stereotype men only as deadbeat. We must either include women or drop this stereotype all together.
I have been fortunate to share in the lives of some of these modern day hero’s also known as single fathers and I have not met one that I am not proud to call “friend”. These men wake up in the morning put on their steel toed boots and hurry into the kitchen where they grab an apron and prepare breakfast for their children. They are the smiling faces these children wake up to and they are the loving voice they hear saying “Don’t forget your lunch.” as they scurry to the bus stop. After getting the kids off to school they go off to work and pray that they didn’t forget anything or that the teacher doesn’t call with an issue or that they didn’t forget to pay a bill or forget one of the kid’s doctors’ appointments. They put in a hard day’s work ,usually on a strenuous job, and when they arrive home there is no home cooked meal and slippers waiting for them but there are hungry children waiting to tell daddy all about their day. These men don’t fall asleep watching the game or a western in a recliner, they fall asleep at the table checking homework or figuring bills.
I recently spoke with a few of the single fathers that I know, all of which are raising or have raised girls alone. I asked for some of their experiences being a single father and their answers didn’t shock me because I have lived through this with them but for those who don’t know and don’t understand I want to share a glimpse in the mind of a “Few Good Men”, soldiers that have stepped up and made a choice to not be absent or deadbeat but to be the one their child could be proud of and the one other men in our society could model.
I asked this specific question to all of them, “As a single father what are some of the things you do or have done that you would have avoided, had you not taken on this responsibility?” Even though the men are all very different the answers were very similar. The number one answer tied between combing little girl’s hair and purchasing feminine products. The men also agreed on purchasing under garments as something they would not have had to do. We discussed things like communicating with the children on why mother is not here and offering security and assurance that he would not leave. We discussed shelter and how much easier it would be to just provide for oneself than making sure there was adequate space and the proper environment for raising a child. They mentioned things like addressing the menstrual cycle and hygiene with girls and how it was difficult but necessary. These answers came out as natural for these men as their nurturing comes out on a daily basis.
One of my friends said something that really stuck with me. At some point I mentioned the word life. I don’t recall exactly what I said but his response touched me and gave me a stronger appreciation for single fathers He said “Life? How can I have a life raising kids alone and working two jobs?” Because I was rushed at the time it was said I did not address it but to my friend and to all single parents; men and women, Life is what you make it. This is your life. You are having “a life” right now. Be proud of what you are doing and the difference you are making not only in the life of your children but also in the life of society as a whole.
To some that might read this and ask “What’s the big deal? Women have been doing this forever.” Well I say to you, it is a big deal. It’s as big of a deal as we’ve made to stereotype men as the deadbeat parent. I would hope that you will now see the rise in single fathers as a positive trend, a signal that more couples are deciding who should raise children based on practical considerations, rather than stereotypical gender roles. I’d hope that you’d have a new found respect for the single fathers in our society because they truly are soldiers.

Charecter Anaylsis

...In The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls, Liz is an exceptionally intelligent and independent child for someone her age, of only fifteen years old. Because of her extreme responsibility and compassion for those around her, she is a great role model for Bean, her little sister. Other than being a role model, Liz's main purpose is to serve as the maternal figure for Bean since their birth mother leaves for weeks at a time, and is not around to support them. Liz shows her role by always taking care of Bean when their mom decides to leave. To begin, Liz achieved her maternal role to Bean, by getting a job of her own, "Liz had been doing some babysitting, but after Mom had been gone a week, she decided to take on extra work, and I got a job delivering Grit, a newspaper with useful stories..." (Walls 15). Liz knows that if she is not independent and got a job then there was no way that her and Bean could survive without their mother. Also it was her idea to leave for Byler so that the bandersnatchers, which is the girls word for the police, would not be able to take them away to Child Protective Services. Liz always knew what to do in these kind of situations, as we are told by Bean, which makes Liz very dependable. Also, Liz is remarkably intelligent, which we know because she is always complimented by teachers, parents and other adults about how outstanding she is. But not only is Liz considered to be smart in school, or "book smart", she also knows how to deal with the...

Turn of the Screw

...home after the previous governess died. Douglas begins to read from the written record, and the story shifts to the governess’s point of view as she narrates her strange experience. The governess begins her story with her first day at Bly, the country home, where she meets Flora and a maid named Mrs. Grose. The governess is nervous but feels relieved by Flora’s beauty and charm. The next day she receives a letter from her employer, which contains a letter from Miles’s headmaster saying that Miles cannot return to school. The letter does not specify what Miles has done to deserve expulsion, and, alarmed, the governess questions Mrs. Grose about it. Mrs. Grose admits that Miles has on occasion been bad, but only in the ways boys ought to be. The governess is reassured as she drives to meet Miles. One evening, as the governess strolls around the grounds, she sees a strange man in a tower of the house and exchanges an intense stare with him. She says nothing to Mrs. Grose. Later, she catches the same man glaring into the dining-room window, and she rushes outside to investigate. The man is gone, and the governess looks into the window from outside. Her image in the window frightens Mrs. Grose, who has just walked into the room....

The Star

...character? To what extent is her final protest justified? How do the other characters portray themselves by their attitudes toward the ritual? Mrs. Tess Hutchinson stands out right from the start: she arrives at the lottery late. She explains to Mr. Summers that she was doing her dishes and forgot what day it was. The town treats her lateness lightly, but several people comment on it, “in voices just loud enough to be heard across the crowd, ‘Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson,’ and ‘ Bill, she made it after all.’” (Jackson 501). It is ironic that she is the one who wins the lottery, and is fated to be stoned. So Tess Hutchinson has already been noticed by people as one who is not entirely part of the group. Before the drawing she is friendly with the other women, pretending to be pleased to be present. The very moment that she sees is her family that draws the black dot, though, her egotism is evident. “You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair!” (Jackson 504). She continues to scream about the unfairness of the ritual up until her stoning. Mrs. Hutchinson knew the lottery was wrong, but she never did anything about it. She pretends as much as she could to enjoy it, when she truly hated it all along. Maybe Jackson is suggesting that the more hypocritical one is, the more of a target they are. Mrs. Hutchinson was clearly the target of her fears. I think sometimes we have no problem remarking on people’s adultery until it is ourselves that...

Mr Ahmed

...May I beg that you will write at once to the mother of this unfortunate woman--to Mrs. Catherick--to ask for her testimony in support of the explanation which I have just offered to you?" I saw Miss Halcombe change colour, and look a little uneasy. Sir Percival's suggestion, politely as it was expressed, appeared to her, as it appeared to me, to point very delicately at the hesitation which her manner had betrayed a moment or two since. I hope, Sir Percival, you don't do me the injustice to suppose that I distrust you," she said quickly. "Certainly not, Miss Halcombe. I make my proposal purely as an act of attention to YOU. Will you excuse my obstinacy if I still venture to press it?" He walked to the writing-table as he spoke, drew a chair to it, and opened the paper case. "Let me beg you to write the note," he said, "as a favour to ME. It need not occupy you more than a few minutes. You have only to ask Mrs. Catherick two questions. First, if her daughter was placed in the Asylum with her knowledge and approval. Secondly, if the share I took in the matter was such as to merit the expression of her gratitude towards myself? Mr. Gilmore's mind is at ease on this unpleasant subject, and your mind is at ease—pray set my mind at ease also by writing the note." "You oblige me to grant your request, Sir Percival, when I would much rather refuse it." With those words Miss Halcombe rose from her place and went to the writing-table. Sir Percival thanked her, handed her a...

...He went to where Miss Mijares sat, a tall, big man, walking with an economy of movement, graceful and light, a man who knew his body and used it well. He sat in the low chair worn decrepit by countless other interviewers and laid all ten fingerprints carefully on the edge of her desk. She pushed a sheet towards him, rolling a pencil along with it. While he read the question and wrote down his answers, she glanced at her watch and saw that it was ten. "I shall be coming back quickly," she said, speaking distinctly in the dialect (you were never sure about these people on their first visit, if they could speak English, or even write at all, the poor were always proud and to use the dialect with them was an act of charity), "you will wait for me." As she walked to the cafeteria, Miss Mijares thought how she could easily have said, Please wait for me, or will you wait for me? But years of working for the placement section had dulled the edges of her instinct for courtesy. She spoke now peremtorily, with an abruptness she knew annoyed the people about her. When she talked with the jobless across her desk, asking them the damning questions that completed their humiliation, watching pale tongues run over dry lips, dirt crusted handkerchiefs flutter in trembling hands, she was filled with an impatience she could not understand. Sign here, she had said thousands of times, pushing the familiar form across, her finger held to a line, feeling the impatience grow at sight of the man...

Missed Appt

...Article 86 of the Uniform Code Of Military Justice. This Article covers Point and Place of Duty. That means from PT formation to COB that is where you will be. What a lot of Soldiers do not understand that includes appointments made by them or someone else. We have appointment times, SP times, formation times and many other start times that dictate we will be there. If a Convoy has an SP time of fifteen hundred hours and the Soldiers decide to show up late because they did not feel like getting ready on time people could die. If they rolled out on time, they may have avoided the ambush or avoided the Vbid that hit them in the bottleneck. It sounds extreme but time management plays a critical role in the Army. When you make an appointment that spot has been reserved for you. That means if you have been given the last slot someone else is going to have to wait for another one to open up. This could be one day or one month. And because you missed it someone else is still going to have to wait when they could have had that spot and been there. If you are going to miss the appointment or cannot make it due to mission they do allow us to cancel the appointment with in twenty four hours. The Army allows us to make appointments for whatever we need. Be it for a medical appointment, house goods, CIF, Smoking Sensation or whatever we need these recourses are available to us. But when Soldiers start missing appointments theses systems start to become inefficient. What a lot of Soldiers do...

So the students teased her but they didn’t know that she had an impressive collection of knives. Her movie career At the age of seven she appeared in her first movie but her breakthrough came with Girl, Interrupted. It followed her big hit: her role in Tomb Raider, where she had to master a British accent. She had to become familiar with kick-boxing, street-fighting, yoga and ballet. Angelina Jolie

...When most people see the name Angelina Jolie they only think of the talented actress, the significant other of Brad Pitt or the celebrity with the very diverse children but she is so much more than that. Since 2001 Jolie has been working alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to bring awareness to the unfortunate situations of refugees from around the world. She has traveled to and volunteered in many third world countries such as; Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Iraq and North Caucasus. In addition to this, she along with Brad Pitt founded the Jolie-Pitt foundation which is dedicated to eradicating extreme rural poverty, protecting natural resources and conserving wildlife. This foundation also donates to many other humanitarian groups, one being Doctors without Borders. In 2009 Angelina Jolie gave the opening speech for a World Refugee Day event being held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington D.C. Throughout this speech Jolie concentrates not on the horrible conditions that refugees endure but on the spirit that they have from being in these situations. When speaking to millions of Americans she doesn’t rely on facts or statistics but instead she uses anecdotal evidence, visualization and pathos to get her point across. The Graduate

...be successful, ideally, would not want to have full control over their child’s career path. Unfortunately, this is not the case for Ben. The day he came home his parents threw him a graduation party -considering none of his real friends were invited- that was really for Mr. Braddock’s (Ben’s father) friends and business partners to associate. Though, the average 20 year old would be thrilled to receive a car for graduating college (or on any occasion for that matter). When Ben’s parents surprised him with an Alfa Romeo or as his dad’s guests might say “A wop-job” he didn’t seem too excited. After he became irritated with all the bogus compliments about graduating college, he raced up to his room to escape the madness. Thinking he was alone, Mrs. Robinson (one of Mr. Braddock’s business partners) walked into Ben’s room intentionally and exclaimed, “Oh I’m sorry, I thought this was the bathroom.” Afraid of her impeccable presence and his lack of experience with a woman, Ben becomes extremely nervous as she bluntly invited herself to sit on his bed. But her demanding tone of voice and her promiscuous personality was just the first sign; Mrs. Robinson was trying to make a move on him. In addition, while her husband Mr. Robinson was unaware of her actions, he suggested that Ben and their daughter Elaine should start talking. Sacrificing his personal time to satisfy everyone else’s desires is essentially one of Ben’s biggest problems. From a friendless graduation party to being seduced...

A Gabe of Sky

...A Gap of Sky A) In the short story “A Gap of Sky” we follow a young woman on her quest for the essence of life. Throughout the story, which stretches across an afternoon, she digs deeper into herself, through sleepiness, drugs, university and a general indifference towards life, until she sees herself, on a grey afternoon in the centre of London, “filled with something fizzing and alive and beautiful”. Ellie wakes up around 4 pm after a rough night with alcohol and various drugs that ended on a rooftop somewhere in London. She remembers that she felt happy that early morning, affected by the drugs and the surreal surroundings, but as she wakes up in her wretched little apartment, the joy of last night seems far away. She needs to hand in an essay on Virginia Wolf the next morning, so she rushes of to get some printer ink, cigarettes and possibly also some more coke. Ellie seems tired, worn out from last night and you understand that she has a hard time getting out of bed. You might get the impression that her life is a bit shallow, for instance when she tells that last night she was surrounded by people who laughed and had a good time, but now she is alone, coping with the harsh realities of a Monday morning. She seems tough, or wanting to seem tough, but she changes towards the end of the short story to a more real toughness of calm confidence. The core of Ellie's life isn't exactly to fulfil society's or her parent's wishes for a bright young woman. She has already had...
