Hello

My name is Mrs. Wilkinson, and I’m a ballet teacher at a community hall in Everington, County Durham. I don’t know if you have ever visited us up here on the north, but Durham is a lovely place – even with its financial struggles. Although a large portion of the land is dedicated to agriculture and production of dairy products, the current strike has hit us exceedingly hard. A lot of people here are unemployed, and relies entirely of soup kitchens and food parcels – just like in a lot of other places here in England, that are also dependent of the coalmines. As you probably know, there have been several clashes between the police and rioters. Take the Battle of Oregave as an example; with more than 5000 police officers and just as many civilians partaking, it is absurd. No man should ever have to fight for a pair that is barely reasonable. Anyhow, back to the ballet! I am not writing to you regarding the strike. The community hall offers both ballet and boxing – some would say that one is for girls and then boys. I’ve had the pleasure of encountering an exceptionally talented male ballet dancer recently - the first male one here in Everington. His name is Billy Elliott, and he lives with his brother, mom, dad and grandmother in a small terraced house. Sadly, his mother died two years ago. His brother, Tony, and his father, Jackie, are both employees at a coalmine. They still go there every day despite the strike to show their disapproval of the so-called scabs. Jackie and Tony both expect Billy to grow up and become identical to them career-wise. Also, they do not wish for him to be a ballet dancer like I, and Billy himself does. I did not know Billy’s mother, but she would have loved for him to follow his dreams.
Tony and Jackie are of the opinion, that ballet is a girls-only sport – but although the family does not have that much money, they would probably help him get to London. Well, that is if you could be incredibly kind and give this 11-year old kid a chance to show you what he’s capable of. Jackie can get a little angry at times, but in spite of the fact, he never says so out loud, he wants the best for his sons. And getting a career within ballet would be amazing for Billy. Billy is a very talented dancer; one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of working with! He’s an excellent learner, a real natural. After only a couple of classes he could do pliés better than a lot of the girls who have been dancing for years. I genuinely hope, that there is a spot for someone like Billy at The Royal Ballet School.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter. Yours sincerely

Title

...At liftoff, Matt Eversmann said a Hail Mary. He was curled into a seat between two helicopter crew chiefs, the knees of his long legs up to his shoulders. Before him, jammed on both sides of the Black Hawk helicopter, was his "chalk," twelve young men in flak vests over tan desert camouflage fatigues. He knew their faces so well they were like brothers. The older guys on this crew, like Eversmann, a staff sergeant with five years in at age twenty-six, had lived and trained together for years. Some had come up together through basic training, jump school, and Ranger school. They had traveled the world, to Korea, Thailand, Central America... they knew each other better than most brothers did. They'd been drunk together, gotten into fights, slept on forest floors, jumped out of airplanes, climbed mountains, shot down foaming rivers with their hearts in their throats, baked and frozen and starved together, passed countless bored hours, teased one another endlessly about girlfriends or lack of same, driven in the middle of the night from Fort Benning to retrieve each other from some diner or strip club on Victory Drive after getting drunk and falling asleep or pissing off some barkeep. Through all those things, they had been training for a moment like this. It was the first time the lanky sergeant had been put in charge, and he was nervous about it. Pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death, Amen. It was midafternoon, October 3, 1993. Eversmann's Chalk Four...

Recruitment & Selection Practices in Safat Motors Ltd

...Chapter 1 1. Introduction “A highly successful organization is built on the strengths of exceptional people. No matter how much technology and mechanization is developed, no organization could survive and prosper without them”. --- Luszez and Kleiner, 2001 The most important corporate resource over the next few years will be talent: smart, sophisticated business people who are technologically literate, globally astute, and operationally agile. And even as the demand for talent goes up, the supply of it will be going down (Fishman, 1998 cf. Trank et al., 2002). This seems to particularly hold true in case of the motor vehicle industry in Bangladesh which requires high quality and highly skilled labour force to cater to the rapidly increasing global demand for communication services but is currently facing an increasing shortage of skills supply. Moreover, due to shortages of skilled workers, high turnover rates, and rapid business growth in the service sectors, it has been noted that recruiting, selecting, and placing applicants are among the top three priorities of human resource professionals (Bureau of National Affairs, 2000; Straus, Miles, and Levesque, 2001 cf. Bauer et al., 2004). Since the motor vehicle industry in Bangladesh is faced with these three challenges, recruitment and selection comprises an important human resource practice in this industry. Further, in this industry, human resources comprise...

Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation (a)

...Lewicki−Barry−Saunders: Negotiation: Readings, Exercises, and Cases, Fifth Edition Cases 1. Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation (A) © The McGraw−Hill Companies, 2007 Case 1 Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation (A) Frank Randall hung up the telephone, leaned across his desk, and fixed a cold stare at Jim Dolan. OK, Jim. They’ve agreed to a meeting. We’ve got three days to resolve this thing. The question is, what approach should we take? How do we get them to accept our offer? Randall, president of Capital Mortgage Insurance Corporation (CMI), had called Dolan, his senior vice president and treasurer, into his office to help him plan their strategy for completing the acquisition of Corporate Transfer Services (CTS). The two men had begun informal discussions with the principal stockholders of the small employee relocation services company some four months earlier. Now, in late May 1979, they were developing the terms of a formal purchase offer and plotting their strategy for the final negotiations. The acquisition, if consummated, would be the first in CMI’s history. Furthermore, it represented a significant departure from the company’s present business. Randall and Dolan knew that the acquisition could have major implications, both for themselves and for the company they had revitalized over the past several years. Jim Dolan ignored Frank Randall’s intense look and gazed out the eighth-floor window overlooking Philadelphia’s Independence...

Preface This book is not just one of the many introductions to Human Resource Management that are published, year after year, for use in HRM classes. Authors of those introductions face many challenges, such as the need to produce something that is both theoretically sound and practically valuable, or to find a way to integrate discussions on a variety of topics into one comprehensible teaching tool. The author of this book took up those challenges by, on the one hand, closely following the conventions that HRM scholars all over the world adhere to with regards to the demarcation...
