Forecasting Methods for Managers

Multi-Variate Modelling including Lagged variables and Dummy Variables

2

Topics for Today
• Multi-variate relationships • Correlation matrices • Doing a multiple regression in Excel • Multi-collinearity • Lagged variables • Dummy variables
▫ For modelling qualitative data ▫ For modelling seasonality

3

Multi-Variate Relationships
• So far we have only looked at Time Series. These are where:
. . . . one dependent variable, eg: sales, temperature . . . . varies with time

• We have identified no underlying drivers of the relationship • We just made forecasts one or more periods ahead • These are commonly used business models . . . . but the business world is not that simple:
▫ The variables we need to forecast do not just depend on time ▫ Multi-variate models are required ▫ We can then identify the ‘levers’ to pull to ‘drive’ our variable

4

An Example
In previous years this was a double module
• Attendance at tutorials varied as the year progressed • Time is one factor but other factors could be:
▫ ▫ ▫ ▫ ▫ ▫ Students’ perception that the tutorial will help them pass Weather conditions: eg temperature on morning of tutorial Time of day for the tutorial (9am tutorials are not popular) Students dropping out of the module or the university Volume of background reading in the recommended texts Assignment marks achieved – low marks produce attendance

5

An Example
How suitable are these other factors?
Suitable
• • • • Tutorial week: this is equivalent to the passage of time Students’ perception that the tutorial will help them pass Weather conditions: seems likely to have an impact Amount of reading required . . . . . . . . large amounts may increase or decrease attendance

Not Suitable
• Time of day: tutorials are the same time each week • Students dropping out is

Summary

...The purpose of this paper is to use APT framework to investigate both the existing and pricing questions. The _rst test in the paper shows that equity returns seem to depend on several common factor, perhaps as many as four. Table 3 explains this statement. When _0 is assumed to be 6%, 88:1% of the groups had at least one signi_cant factor risk premium, 57:1% had at least two signi_cant factor risk premium and 33:3% of the groups at least three risk premia were signi_cant. However, this results are far from the case in which _0 = 0. So, part 1 of table 3 shows that at least three factors are important for pricing but it is unlikely that more than four are present. In the second part of table 3, _0 is not assumed to be a constant, on the contrary it is estimated. However, this does not change the result much, similar statistics are obtained. 47:6% of the groups had at least two signi_cant factor risk premium while only 7:1% of the groups had three or more signi_cant factor risk premium. The three signi_cant fac- tors which is obtained when _0 = 6% may be an overestimate because of the incorrect choice of the zero beta return _0. The second test is about one particular variable, the total variance of individual returns or the \own" variance. When APT is valid, total variance would not a_ect expected returns since its diversi_able component would be eliminated by portfolio formation and its non-diversi_able part would depend only on the factor loading and factor...

Likert

...Factor-analyzing Likert-scale data under the assumption of multivariate normality complicates a meaningful comparison of observed groups or latent classes Gitta Lubke University of California, Los Angeles Bengt Muth´n e University of California, Los Angeles Abstract Treating Likert scale data as continuous outcomes in confirmatory factor analysis violates the assumption of multivariate normality. Given certain requirements pertaining to the number of categories, skewness, size of the factor loadings, etc., it seems nevertheless possible to recover true parameter values if the data stem from a single homogenous population. It is shown in a multi-group and a latent class context that analyzing Likert data under the assumption of multi-variate normality may distort the factor structure differently across groups or classes. Hence, investigating measurement invariance, which is a necessary requirement for a meaningful comparison of observed groups or latent classes, is problematic. Analyzing subscale scores computed from Likert items does not necessarily solve the problem. Based on a power study, some conditions are established to obtain acceptable results. Questionnaires designed to measure latent variables such as personality factors or attitudes typically use Likert scales as a response format. In response to statements such as ‘does the student yell at others’, participants are asked to choose one of a given number of ordered response categories which run for instance from...

A Comparison of Markov Based Logistic Model Determining the Risk Factors of Health Conditions for Old Aged American People

...A Comparison of Markov Based Logistic Model Determining the Risk Factors of Health Conditions for Old Aged American People By ASEK MD. SUZAUDDIN Abstract: Markov model are expedient and very serviceable method for analyzing longitudinal or categorical data. This method play an important role in various fields to explain the dependence pattern of a time series over a period of time and to predict the future course of process behavior by its investigative and prognostic power. Health and Retirement Survey (HRS) data, an ongoing longitudinal survey that interviews a national sample of persons born between the years 1931 and 1941at two year intervalsWe discussed two discrete time markov models proposed by Muenz-Rubinstein and Azzalini respectively for the HRS dataset and fit this two models considering health conditions as a dependent variable. We also estimate the efficiency for the two fitted model and compare the models on the basis of the results. This study fits the two models and compare them on the basis of their efficiencies. In here we fit those models for the Health conditions of the old peoples and obtain the efficiencies for both models and found that the estimate of Azzalini’s model is more efficient than that of Muenz-Rubinstein model. 1. Introduction Longitudinal data...

Solar Energy Potential Assessment Using Gis

...Energy Education Science and Technology 2007 Volume(issue) 18(2): 101-114 Solar energy potential assessment using GIS T. V. Ramachandra Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Centre for Application of Science and Technology to Rural Areas (ASTRA), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012, India Received 07 December 2006; accepted 15 December 2006 Abstract Renewable energy resources are those having a cycling time less than 100 years and are renewed by the nature and their supply exceeds the rate of consumption. Renewable energy systems use resources that are constantly replaced in nature and are usually less polluting. In order to tap the potential of renewable energy sources, there is a need to assess the availability of resources spatially as well as temporally. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) along with Remote Sensing (RS) helps in mapping on spatial and temporal scales of the resources and demand. The spatial database of resource availability and the demand would help in the regional energy planning. This paper discusses the application of geographical information system (GIS) to map the solar potential in Karnataka state, India. Regions suitable for tapping solar energy are mapped on the basis of global solar radiation data, and this analysis provides a picture of the potential. The study identifies that Coastal parts of Karnataka with the higher global solar radiation is ideally suited for harvesting solar energy. The potential analysis...

Scientific Paper on Diffusion

...that salient features of a panel of time series of annual citations can be captured by a Bass type diffusion model. We put forward an extended version of this diffusion model, where we consider the relation between key characteristics of the diffusion process and features of the articles. More specifically, parameters measuring citations’ ceiling and the timing of peak citations are correlated with specific features of the articles like the number of pages and the number of authors. Our approach amounts to a multi-level non-linear regression for a panel of time series. We illustrate our model for citations to articles that were published in Econometrica and the Journal of Econometrics. Amongst other things, we find that more references lead to more citations and that for the Journal of Econometrics peak citations of more recent articles tend to occur later. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: C33; M21 Keywords: Diffusion of innovations; Multi-level regression 1. Introduction Citations to scientific publications like journal articles often show characteristics that bear similarities with the diffusion of a new product. Shortly after publication, there are not many citations. Then, the number of citations starts to grow, and after a few years, citations may peak. Finally, after this peak, citations eventually level off towards zero. The reason for this may vary across articles. The article may become outdated or it may be ÃCorresponding author. ...Agent Performance and Customer Satisfaction Abstract To fulfill its mission, Extension must develop programs that are relevant and high quality, and improve the lives of clients. Customer satisfaction surveys are used in Florida to collect data about these attributes. It is also important to understand how employee performance affects customer satisfaction. Our findings show that customer satisfaction was not significantly influenced by agent performance and that Florida Cooperative Extension benefits from the experience of its workforce. Given the importance of customer satisfaction as Extension's performance measure for the Florida Legislature, we suggest that administrators should emphasize customer satisfaction as a major factor in employee performance scores.  Bryan D. Terry Coordinator, Statistical Research bterry@mail.ifas.ufl.edu Glenn D. Israel Professor gdi@mail.ifas.ufl.edu Department of Agricultural Education and Communication University of Florida Gainesville, Florida Introduction Given the importance of ensuring program relevance, quality, and impacts, as well as the use of customer satisfaction surveys in accountability, understanding the relationship that exists between employee performance and customer satisfaction is critical to identifying how well an organization is fulfilling its mission. Thus, Cooperative Extension must deliver relevant, high-quality programs that, in turn, help improve the lives of clients (Ladewig, 1999). In Florida, these...

Resistance to Change

...Abstract Resistance to organisational change is seen as one of the impediments to organisational expansion and growth due to its negative repercussions. This study therefore sought to investigate the factors that influence resistance to or- ganisational change at Oti-Yeboah Complex Limited. De- scriptive survey design was adopted to collect information using stratified sampling and self-administered question- naires. Descriptive statistics, bi-variate correlation, regres- sion analysis and t-test were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that less employee participation in deci- sion making and lack of trust in management contributed highly to resistance at Oti-Yeboah Complex Limited. In addition, factors such as lack of motivation, poor chan- nels of communication, and information exchange also contributed to resistance. The study suggests that manage- ment should encourage employee participation in decision making, build confidence, accept constructive criticism, be transparent and communicate clearly the need for change to employees. INTRODUCTION Organisations operate within an increasingly volatile environment and are in a state of constant change. The pressure to change stems from a variety of internal and external sources such as political, economic, social and technological factors (Boojihawon & Segal-Horn, 2006). Leana and Barry (2000) posit that organizational change is aimed at adapting to the environment, improvement...
