The way artists have made, recorded and listened to music has evolved since its implementation in American culture. First, people mainly performed music until the Great Depression struck and music’s focus shifted towards recorded sound. Musical pioneers, such as John Phillip Sousa, were upset at this shift and rightly so as it threatened artists’ passions and livelihood. But what the public desires will ultimately drown out old voices and new and more sophisticated technology will prevail. Eventually, the radio and recorded music were the norm, gradually rising in the early 1900s. Although radio was an astronomical marketing tool for the music industry, it did not compare to the effect that motion pictures had on music (Popart University). Contrary to popular belief, the …show more content…
Some artists go to great lengths to create shocking and provocative music videos in order to generate sales. Being a musician myself, I would never want to succumb to selling music because I made a video with half naked women. Back in the early 80s MTV would not air Rick James’ music video for “Superfreak” and he deemed it to be because of race. However, the video does contain women in provocative clothing dancing and grinding on James himself. This is why MTV “claimed” they would not air it which makes sense because society was generally less accepting of content like that during that era then they are today. A more modern example would be Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” music video that has garnered over 500 million views on YouTube. It is more or less a video of Minaj and others “twerking” throughout the video and the Huffington Post even wrote an article titled, “Nicki Minaj's 'Anaconda' Video Has All The Butts You Could Ever Want In A Music Video.” Nicki Minaj has done wonders for female rap music, breaking barriers left and right, but music videos like this somewhat taint those

Video Summary: the Economy of Brazil

...According to Al Jazeera English’s video, Brazil’s booming economy July 9, 2008, Brazil is reported as a sleeping giant and a powerhouse. Brazil was also recognized as having one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America based on its strengths of steady gains of investments in the country’s stock market. In 2008, Brazil’s stock market grew 10% within a matter of months. Furthermore, Brazil experienced a vigorous economic growth by far outpacing competitors in expanding their agricultural, mining and manufacturing products. They also enjoy a stable political system and an enormous amount of people available to work in their different areas of growth. According to Al Jazeera English’s video, “Highs and lows of Brazil’s economic boom” of September 30, 2007, Brazil struggled with some of the same weaknesses of other countries. Although a powerhouse within the world’s economic market, there is still a lot of work to be done within Brazil. Many of Brazil’s poverty stricken or low-income families and communities do not get to enjoy the country’s growth. Some of these families and communities live below the poverty line and simply don’t have the money to invest in the stock market. Additionally, there are even Brazilian families that do live above the poverty line but don’t earn sufficient wages to participate in the stock market because the average income in Brazil does not keep the pace that is required to meet the country’s everyday standards of living. ...

Mtv Now Verses Before

...channel as one could turn on and watch actual music videos all day long and represented its title in MTV standing for music television. Nowadays it is rare to turn on MTV and watch a video at all. Instead of a video anymore is reality shows and talk shows that don’t relate with music at all. People counted on them to provide the latest videos, the hottest information to keep them up with your favorite musicians. Personally I am disappointed whenever I turn on MTV because there is never music playing which was the reason that I watched MTV in the first place. Any person can easily look at the schedule for the day in the TV guide and see nothing on MTV channel relating to music. Now all you see is stupid reality shows. Before there were not very many shows at all but the ones that there were more about music news, concerts upcoming events, or occasionally a controversial show such as, Beavis and Butthead. Which in its day posed a problem for the rather conservative. The rest of the time it was all straight music and videos. Nowadays instead of being able to watch all your favorite videos on MTV you must have access to the Internet with a lot of people do not have. If there is access the Internet you can watch all of your videos on you tube. I even took a small survey and fourteen out of twenty people I asked don’t even remember seeing videos on music television nor do they remember sex and profanity prohibited which proves to me that in music television now sucks verses before. Maroon 5 Analysis

...is the most immoral establishment I’ve seen in a music video. The opening lyrics that introduces the first lines to the song, clearly elucidates the creepiness aura that subsides with the song’s theme. As the song progresses, it lures the listener towards the catchy audacity of the chorus- remodeling the idea of stalking woman to be exceptionally appropriate. The music video has not only made its reputation slightly morbid, but has caught the disturbed attention of the music industry. The music video has wrongly casted out this illicit representation of “stalking with romance” into a romantic perspective, and should revamp their messages that they input into their catchy tunes. The first 10 seconds of the music video has already gotten the audience sensing a dark scenario. The beginning of the music video, we see the lead singer, Adam Levine, portraying a butcher, who stalks a woman under the night sky- if not groping an animal carcass in meat lockers. He begins to follow her through the streets and watches her go inside her home. The disturbing plot continues as he breaks into her home and crawls into her bed while she sleeps, unaware of his presence. The next following scenes become a sexual bloodbath of the stalker’s fantasy. This gruesome scenario paints the picture, of the idea: “stalking with romance” to be encouraged. Then what is seen till the end, is the repetition of the whole controversial aspect that made this video a “dangerous” feature of the entertainment industry...

Michael and Spike

...Spike and Michael The music can be used to intensify the reaction and understanding of the image as well as imagines are used to reinforce the emotional response to the music. The two most recognized producers of this concept are Spike Jonze and Michael Gondry. With styles totally different, Skipe and Michael opened way to a new course of the music and image through their innovative videos, which were rewarded and/or nominated in many occasions for an award. Adam Spiegel, well known as Spike Jonze, was born in 1969. Owner of a good sense of humor showed in his personality. Jonze always claimed to be an heir of the Spiegel magazine fortune which was far away from the reality. In the beginning of his career, being a marker of skateboard videos was the job that could be denominated as the door that opened the road to success. Jonze’s videos can be appreciated many times as ironic, simples or sometimes more complex. For example, “Cannonball”, his first MTV success music video made for the Breeders Band in 1993 and codirected by Michael Gordon, is notable for its creating a bite-sized, juniors version and pan outlandishness. The video shows Kim Deal singing underwater as a metal ball rolls down a suburban street going to different directions. At the same time the band is playing in a place that looks like a garage. Later, at the end of the video the group changed their clothes for clothes that are more colorful and with different style. With this characterizing Jonez wants to show...

Killing Us Softly 3 & Dreamworlds 3 Review

...Killing us softly 3 & Dreamworlds 3 Review Killing Us Softly 3 This post-viewing guide is intended to deepen the audience’s critical engagement with the documentary film, Killing Us Softly III. It is targeted at women and men between the ages of 15-30 who are bombarded with advertisements every day. Possible ways that the guide might be used include: recognition of to the role of advertisement in American society and culture, research projects aimed at exploring discrimination against women and/or the role of advertisement in America, and finally, for pure reasons of interest. Kilbourne says that advertisements give the message that what is most important is how we look. We must spend time, energy and money on our outward appearance or else we are failures. Advertisements say that we can look a certain way if we try hard enough. However, the fact of the matter is that we all fail because there is no such thing as perfection. It is this kind of powerful message that influences self-esteem and also men’s perceptions on acceptable ways of treating women. Kilbourne argues that advertisements treat women as though they are objects. Advertisements have turned women’s bodies into objects such as beer cans and scissors. This method of turning a woman into a thing can be violence. She also states that advertisements portray women as not being fully human. For example, in many advertisements, only one part of the body is focused on, such as the rear, legs or breasts. Men do...

Instagram; Create an account to show people pictures of the brand you’re advertising/ have your own account to show people what you’re doing. Product Placements in Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” Music Video

...Not until Lady Gaga wore a meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Award did her name spread like wildfire and become the endless discussion topics regarding her quirky, one-of-a-kind taste of fashion and almost everything else, including music video creation. That explains why once her “Telephone” video co-starring with Beyoncé was premiered, Gaga’s obsessive fans and many pop-culture observers began to break it down frame by frame. Surprisingly, it was not the blatant nudity, lesbianism or poison, but the product placement sprinkled throughout the video that garnered viewers’ attention most. The video’s remarkable number of product placements showcases the consumerist culture we are in, where advertisers strive to revitalize and raise public awareness of their brands by incorporating their products into popular music, movies, TV shows and sports besides traditional advertising. The 9-minute video is packed with at least eight different brands, including Virgin Mobile, Monster Heartbeats by Lady Gaga headphones, Hewlett Packard laptop, Polaroid, Diet Coke, Wonder Bread, Miracle Whip, and dating site PlentyOfFish.com. Although the frequency of product placement in this music video has been to a ridiculous level, the way that brands listed above are inserted into each scene is quite coherent. For example, Gaga steals the Virgin cellphone to contact Beyoncé to bail her out of jail. Food brands like Miracle Whip and Wonder Bread feature in the kitchen scene. The production...

One Night

...I was alone in my room on a calm summer night, awakened by the thunder. It was hard for me to sleep due to my excitement of my 6th birthday party the next day. As I dosed off to sleep I woke up to a loud noise. Peeking out of my cover I realized it was thunder. Sacred of treacherous winds and the rain I looked out my window to wish on a star hoping and praying the rain would go away. As I am in my window I start to feel my house lift from the ground swirling round and round. I ran to my parent’s bedroom to make sure they were alright; attempting to open up the door they seemed to be a strong force preventing me from getting in so I yelled mom/dad as loud as I could but there was no response. Next I sprinted down the stairs to my brother’s room and tried to open the door but his was locked. Feeling hopeless and afraid I ran back to my bedroom and got underneath my covers. I started to pray that this was all a bad dream that I would soon wake up from, the rain came to a halt and the winds began to settle. As I pulled the covers from off of my head, then got out of the bed to go the window I notice clouds of fog surrounding the house. What I thought was a bad dream was not so bad after all; there were stuffed animals and candy everywhere. I notice that when I walked it was as if I was floating on thin air like there was nothing beneath me. Everything was in slow motion, I thought to myself wow is this what every kid experiences the night before they turn 6 years old...
