MUSIC AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO OVERALL INTELLECT Abstract A review of previous studies was conducted to test and measure the correlation of music and its influence on various levels of intellect. Subjects range in age from 9 to 67 and education from elementary school to undergraduate and beyond. Analysis included studies of subjects who listened to music and subjects that have varying levels of musical training. While some studies found significant results in some areas of cognition, intelligence and memory, they were inconsistent and concluded that further testing was needed. This review examines further the question of causation with music as a variable with a direct effect to a subject’s intellect as addressed by Schellenberg (2011). To understand if there is a direct relationship between music and intellect, further research of a subject’s background and mentality is required.

MUSIC AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO OVERALL INTELLECT Title of Paper Here Many studies have sought to provide a significant and reliable relationship between music as a factor of a subject’s intelligence or memory retention. The results are often conflicting within each experiment as well as between other similar experiments. Still, the pursuit of significant results relating music as a variable to some level of intelligence continues. Two separate studies of undergraduate subjects in regard to the Mozart effect, concluded that there was no significant improved performance on spacial tasks after listening to music (Thompson, Schellenberg & Husain, 2001; Bridgett &

Gender Critique Love the Way You Lie Ii

...thoughts on gender diversity are affected by today’s culture. It can come from our families, friends, magazines, television and even music. The media today plays an even larger part in our gender make up than it did as little as a decade ago. With the creation of facebook, youtube and instagram, we are seeing a greater influence than ever. For the sake of this paper I would like to focus on how music and television affect gender diversity. When a new song is released, depending on public opinion, the record could sell thousands of copies and as a result be played on the radio several times a day reaching hundreds of thousands of listeners. Unless parents have the ability to strictly monitor all of their children’s music choices and I don’t know many who do, the young people today are hearing all sorts of gender messages through music that may be subconsciously shaping who they are. Even though there are many different genres of music I am going to focus on the rap culture and the messages they emit. Many of the rap songs portray women as weak and submissive. Several of the songs include violence against women whether it is sexual, mental or domestic which displays an overall lack of respect for females. While at the same time the man is portrayed as strong, wealthy and powerful and overall domineering of the woman. Rarely in rap music, is there a song that paints a picture of the woman having power over the man. The first song that came to mind when given this assignment...

...genres that come under the overall category of ‘Factual’. There ones that inform the viewers, educate and provide solely as entertainment. The variations of factual productions are: Documentary, News-Broadcasts, Fly-On-The-wall, Biographical, Public participation, chat shows and fact based entertainment. These tend to include key features such as psychographics, persuasive devices, provide information, and attend to a target audience. A factual product differentiates from a promotional/fictional product. A factual product is designed to inform and educate the viewer; however, a fictional production is more towards entertaining the audience. Overview There are several types of factual moving image productions. One of these is a news broadcast. A news broadcast is a programme in which informs the audience on the current events happening around the world today. Examples of a news broadcast would be: BBC news at six, Good Morning Britain and ITV News. The general objective of a news broadcast is to educate and give information to the viewers. The audience profiling for a news show, ‘News at Ten’ for example, would be: working class, due to it being on so late in the evening (A person who works would not have enough time to watch news broadcast in the afternoon). However, a news show broadcasted in the early morning could be targeted at students due to their early schedules. The gender profile for a news broadcast wouldn’t be any in particular. Overall, the audience profile for...

...3 Thinking Techniques to Improve Your Intellectual Horsepower Here are 3 simple thinking techniques I tend to use each day.  There are some more advanced thinking techniques, but here I’m boiling down to a set of 3 you can use today.  In fact, you can even use them while you read this post.  I’ll go through the thinking techniques in order from simpler to more complex, so you can use them right away. For the sake of this exercise, let’s think of "thinking" as simply asking and answering questions.  If you want to improve your thinking, ask better questions.  Using these techniques will improve your thinking, by improving your questions. 3 Thinking Techniques  Here are 3 thinking techniques I use fairly regularly: * How Might That Be True? * PMI * Six Thinking Hats How Might That Be True  When you hear something new, or information that conflicts with what you think you already know, ask yourself, "how might that be true?"  This simple question will open your curiosity.  It can also help you build rapport.  This second point is especially important.  If you’re quick to prove people wrong, people won’t share information with you.  Rather than fight somebody on a point, right from the start, you can help them explore the point. You don’t have to agree.  Instead, you’re exploring possibility.  Sometimes people have good information or knowledge, but it’s generalized so it appears to be wrong, but there’s kernels of truth or insight. PMI  I think of PMI as Edward...

Broca's Aphasia

...all animals are capable of vocalizations and many have a rich and diverse method of communication; no animal can match the dexterity and abstract cognition of the human mind. The study of the way the brain processes, stores, and organizes information into learning has been studied for centuries—yet it has only been in the past few hundred years that true breakthroughs in the cognitive sciences has been observed. Arguably one of the most essential discoveries in brain function lies within the compartmentalization of mental, emotional, logistical, motor, and cognitive capabilities, this process began in earnest with the discovery of Broca's Area through the diagnosis of a particular symptom of trauma—Broca's aphasia. To understand the overall picture of this convoluted problem we must first examine the historical foundations through which aphasia was diagnosed. From there we will attempt to dissect the process of language evolution and attempt to recognize where aphasia fits within the equation of language structure. From structure, we must then look even closer to the actual biology of the neural network to examine how learning and language develops in order to assist in the therapy of aphasics the world over. Broca's area is a portion of the brain in the left temporal lobe which has been attributed to the process of speech. The term “aphasia” is derived from the Greek, aphatos, meaning “without speech”; although not all forms of aphasia silence the aphasic. As opposed...

Personality Influence Job Satisfaction

...Taxonomy is always a contentious issue because the world does not come to us in neat little packages (S. J. Gould, 1981, p. 158). Personality has been conceptualized from a variety of theoretical perspectives, and at various levels of abstraction or breadth (John, Hampson, & Goldberg, 1991; McAdams, 1995). Each of these levels has made unique contributions to our understanding of individual differences in behavior and experience. However, the number of personality traits, and scales designed to measure them, escalated without an end in sight (Goldberg, 1971). Researchers, as well as practitioners in the field of personality assessment, were faced with a bewildering array of personality scales from which to choose, with little guidance and no overall rationale at hand. What made matters worse was that scales with the same name often measure concepts that are not the same, and scales with different names often measure concepts that are quite similar. Although diversity and scientific pluralism are useful, the systematic accumulation of findings and the communication among researchers became difficult amidst the Babel of concepts and scales. Many personality researchers had hoped that they might devise the structure that would transform the Babel into a community speaking a common...

The Johari Window Explained

...Description Of How Your Personality Was Formed Application of theories of personality development: This paper addresses two theories that present contrasting views of my own personality which is influenced not only by my parents but other family members, friends and the world around me. Therefore these are the trait and phenomenological theories of personality. In the trait theories, the basic variables of the theory are people’s traits, that is, their “broad predispositions to respond in particular ways” (Pervin & John, 2001, p. 226). Most trait theories try to identify a common set of traits that can be used to describe the personality of any individual. These “nomothetic” trait theories rely on the statistical procedure of factor analysis to identify dimensions that can be used summarize individual differences in personality traits. Researchers using this technique commonly identify a set of five trait dimensions. These Big Five personality traits include extroversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness to experience (Pervin & John, 2001). which I found out that I’m marginal or no preference of Extraversion over Introversion is (1%), slight preference of Intuition over Sensing is (12%), moderate preference of Feeling over Thinking is (25%) and slight preference of Judging over Perceiving is (6%) after taking the big five test online. Therefore once one identifies a set of basic traits in this manner, a primary question is to identify...

Sociology and Technology

...17.3.2011 ABSTRACT The purpose of this analysis is to determine some of the primary issues concerning the influence of the media and technology in post-modern American society. We know that the media is a prevalent and powerful force in contemporary society and that technology has infiltrated the everyday lives of most Americans. In this analysis I will examine the impacts of media and technological saturation through an exploration of my own media usage habits. After a 72-hour period in which I will not use my media/technological electronics, I will define what I see as the prevalent issues surrounding present-day American reliance on media and technology as a source of information, as well as a method of understanding the world. Included is a discussion of the conflict theory and its perception of the ways in which the bourgeoisie and elite politicians control and oppress the proletariat through utilization of media and technology as well as a brief overview of the class-dominance theory of the social media. I will explore some of the methods by which this is done, as well as investigate some of the impacts that the media/technology have on the public, especially Narcotizing Dysfunction. I will explain in detail precisely how the media shape and influence people and society, and I will address the controversial use of electronic devices as communication tools, particularly their overuse. I shall discuss the possibility that these kinds of technologies are addictive...
