April 1st, 2012 The artist that I chose to critique was Joe Bonamassa (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar), and the album I chose to work with was his album “Had to cry today”. The genre of the album is Rock/Blues with a release date of August 24th, 2004. In this album were a few other artists that joined him such as Jon Paris (harmonica), Benny Harrison (hammond b-3 organ), Eric Czar (Bass guitar), and Kenny Kramme (drums, percussions). Joe was raised in New York where his parents owned a guitar shop. He comes from a family of music. Both his father and grandfather played the trumpet. He learned how to play the guitar at the very young age of 4. Some of the artists who inspired him were Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray. I am drawn to this artist for his style of blues and rock. His music makes me feel mellow and calm. Makes me want to be at a bar drinking a beer, smoking a cigarette and listen to him play live. The culture/environmental music that I can identify in this music are the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Joe’s music is mostly guitar and drums.
My Overall impression of the album is excellent. I only disliked 2 songs from the entire album. My favorite song from the album was song title “Reconsider baby” and my second was “When she dances”. Both are slower and mellow. The songs are very calming and easy to listen too. My least favorite song was “Faux Martini”. This song was my least favorite because it sounds too much like country and I’m not a country fan. Sounds very honky tonk and that’s not my style at all. One of the musical characteristics I found is his music was texture. His music is very thick and full. It’s a part of western music and that is what Joe sings. I can identify specially the acoustic, bass and electric guitars involved.
The flow of the album seemed to go pretty steady. The album made sense to me. It seemed as though the album was long connected project but I also feel like it’s not very hard for him to create music. It seems like it comes easy for him. Only two songs seemed that they did not belong on the album. But I understand you have to mix the songs up a little to create an album. Some songs don’t have many words and have more of instruments playing that he can express himself deeply with. I sometime would rather listen to the guitars playing than listening to someone sing. I have always been a fan of guitars. Something about a man and a guitar gets to me, it’s even better when they can sing too.
One song that seems to stand out more than others is “When she dances”. This song is slower than others and almost sounds country. Like I said before I’m not a fan of country but I can tolerate the slower songs and this song is slower. This song has a melody to it. The smoothness and wideness is what drew me to the song. During the song he appears to have the same theme with the line of, “When she dances I see where my only chance is”. Even though he repeats this chorus quite a bit I don’t mind because it sounds so sweet and meaningful. I feel the real emotions involved with the song. It’s very moving and emotional. I can tell his singing from the heart.
I am going to rate this album with 3 stars ***Good. I am ranking this album this because I truly enjoyed listening to this album but did not care for the song “Faux Martini” and “Travling South”. Both of these songs are too Country for my liking. I enjoy the blues/jazz sound. It almost seems that these songs do not belong to this album. Would I recommend this album to others to listen too? Absolutely. I feel like this kind of music has been around for quite some time and everyone would be able to relate to it in one way or another. The genre of music has been around for a very long time so whether you like this kind of music or not we have all heard one time or another and can give our judgment. In conclusion of this album/artist review paper I have found a great interest in learning how music is made and the understanding of how it’s performed. Music is a true gift and a privilege to be blessed with such a talent. I truly envy the people who are able to express their emotions through music.

...Music of my Life! Sheri Webb HU300-15 Music of my Life! My life has been interesting, many good memories associated with music and how it impacted my life. The interesting thing about mine is I can associate music with each good memory in my life. From early childhood to current time I have memories of music that defines the memories of my life. I will explain each era of my life, the music I listened to and how that music impacted it. My childhood memories of music is of sitting on Sunday listening to vinyl records with my dad after church. It was a very special memory of mine because I was really close to my dad. The type of music we listened to was classic Country and Western. We would listen to artists such as Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams Sr., George Jones, Tammy Wynette and Willie Nelson. In the textbook it states,” Country and western music has carried on the narrative tradition of folk music, adding its own unique tales to the repertoire.” (Janaro & Altshuler 2012, page 173) I can remember listening to Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn singing the song, Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man. These songs I listened to with my dad made me happy and I was glad that I could share this time with my dad. My adolescence was an interesting time because I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. Music in My Life

...For a young person with little experience, music can be a hard concept, especially singing. At the age of nine, I stepped into the field of music. Little did I know that it would be life-changing. My story begins in 2001. My mother asked if I would be interested in singing. I hadn’t given it much thought. She suggested I join the Phoenix Boys Choir. She explained what it was and how successful it had always been. I decided to try out. When I arrived, I met the conductor in charge of the younger boys. She had me sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” A few moments later the conductor announced that I had passed my audition and would soon be a member of the training choir. I was so thrilled I couldn’t say a word. This would turn out to be one of the most memorable moments of my life. I was going to be a member of the internationally known Phoenix Boys Choir! I moved up through the levels of the choir quickly. Every boy longs to be in the most elite group – the Tour Choir. After two years, I made it. At 11 I had learned more about music than I could possibly have imagined. I learned music theory and how to read music. By the end of seventh grade I had been to Spain, Italy, and France. In Rome we performed at Saint Peter’s Basilica. It was a blessing to be able to sing in such a holy setting. We also sang in the Florence Cathedral. We traveled around the United States performing with other choirs. Often we sang for dignitaries....

Why Music Is My Life

...Music is an important part of life. It is a form of expression. It has no boundaries, and it follows no guidelines. Essentially, to me, music is like air. It has no true shape or definition, yet we need it to live. Imagine a world without music. All you’re left with is dust. Music is life itself. As a junior in high school, I’ve given considerable thought to my future. When I was younger, I saw myself as an architect or perhaps just simply an artist. When I grew to be a bit older, I saw myself in robotic science. Then, I was accepted into Milwaukee High School of the Arts. It was perhaps one of the best things to ever happen to me. When I first started, I had very little music instruction. Under the direction of Mrs.Garcia, I quickly was able to expand my knowledge. Less than a few months at the school, I realized that music is my calling. With college approaching at an ever increasing rate, I’ve begun to plan my life in incredible detail. The one thing that remains constant in my planning would have to be music. Music is my life. This summer, I shall begin touring colleges. My first choice would have to be UW-Milwaukee. Both my band director and private lessons teacher went there. They’re both fantastic and I look up to them. Musical education would be an amazing thing to do. I want the opportunity to watch as a child grows under my instruction. I want to be able to have someone look up to me as much as I look up to my lessons teacher....

Music for My Soul

...Music For My Soul Kaplan University 300-02 – Art and Humanities: Twentieth Century and Beyond Music For My Soul Being from a family of many musicians and singers, music is a huge part of my life. It’s much more than a melody in my ear. It’s the movement of my body, ease of my mind, and thoughts I can only express through sweet, therapeutic sounds. Music is that “feeling” I get when I hear it. Through my childhood to adulthood, it still lives in me. Various genres of music have played important roles in my life. Rhythm & Blues (R&B), Rap/Hip Hop, Neo Soul, and Gospel have all conveyed emotions within me. Journey with me as I take a look back over my life and reminisce on how important music has been for my soul. As a child, I remember sitting in my room with my radio blasted! I would sing and dance until I became completely exhausted. I was very familiar with Rap/Hip Hop, R&B, and Gospel music. These three genres of music captivated me in three different ways. The rhythm of Rap music made me dance until I would sweat. Can’t Touch This by M.C. Hammer was my all time favorite. M.C. Hammer started the song with “my, my, my, my music hits me so hard, makes me wanna say “Oh my Lord, thank you for blessing me with a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet” (Hammer, 1990, track 2). Those were the only words to the verse I knew for a long time. I must admit that words to Rap songs didn’t mean very much to me back then....

A Quick Little Essay I Had to Write on Music

...By: forgottenangel38 Written on June 5th, 2011 Music is something that I have been raised with since I have musicians as parents, and it’s also something in lives of everyone. Music is often taken for granted but it lends to our every day in simplistic ways. Music isn’t just something that orchestras perform, but found in movies, bird’s songs, even our rhythmic heartbeats. Life without music would be like life without the enhancement of colors: dull and monotonous. I love music and it’s something I hope to make a career out of, music performance in particular. I’m often told by people that it’s a fantasy that can’t be reached being I play one the most competitive instruments. A teacher once said to me it’s impossible to be a successful musician and get good grades in school. Confidence is something I struggle with because of this challenge, but my love for music just makes me push myself harder. Music is significant in my life for several reasons. First, it’s something I’ve grown up with. My parents have provided me with numerous musical opportunities even before I picked up an instrument. Whether it be my mom singing Beethoven’s 7th Symphony to me as a baby or the numerous concert I’ve been brought to, music has always been there. Right from when I picked up a flute for the first time I found it exciting and I was willing to accept any challenge so that one day I could “be like mommy.”...

Sound Tracks to My Life

...Sound Tracks to My Life I wonder if there is such a thing as a good addiction, because I’m sure as hell addicted to music. When I think of music I think of an escape. I can be doing anything at any given moment and put in a pair of head phones and be completely in another world. Without music, my day is completely empty and boring. I wake up to music; I go to school listening to music and even eat to it. Music is a source of joy, stress, tears, camaraderie and fulfillment for me. What would life be without music? The world would be a very quiet place. Music for me is a reminder of how things once were an indication of how things are, and a view of where society is headed. Music is a direct reflection of the picture of society. Music can be a way to deliver messages, a poetic medium, a fine art, or nothing more than a source of entertainment. No matter what it is used for, music is the perfect art and my life would be that much less complete without it. Two songs come to mind when I think about all these sources of completeness for myself. First is “Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood and “You and Me” by Soldier of Jah Army. I often think of the words of Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” in which he states:”And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free....” I wholeheartedly agree. My heart swells with gratitude to God and this wonderful land where, regardless of whom I am or what my goals are, I have that priceless gift of freedom....

Human Being

...When Was Music Born? Who was the first father of music? It seems difficult to answer this question. Probably, because of the human demand for making life colorful and diminishing stress, music was discovered and improved from generation to generation. Moreover, music became a part of our lives, and it has a lot of significant impacts on all of us, including myself. Although I neither have a long playlist in my phone nor do I listen to music all the time, I realize that I take advantage of music a lot. Music helps me to improve my concentration and to develop relationships; however, there is a negative impact for me. Personally, listening to music helps me study efficiently by increasing my focus. According to the left-right brain theory, in the article from pychology.about.com, left brain and right brain handle different tasks. While the left side's function is to engage in academic activities such as critical thinking, numbers, reasoning, and math problems; the right side is considered to be in a resting state involved in emotion, arts, imagination, music, and the creative abilities. When we are paying attention to deal with a specific task, only one part of the brain is working, and the other is resting, which easily leads to distraction. For example, whenever I do my math homework, I usually lose my concentration on it just after five or ten minutes by day dreaming. However, if I listen to music while studying I can concentrate better....
