Music of my Life! My life has been interesting, many good memories associated with music and how it impacted my life. The interesting thing about mine is I can associate music with each good memory in my life. From early childhood to current time I have memories of music that defines the memories of my life. I will explain each era of my life, the music I listened to and how that music impacted it. My childhood memories of music is of sitting on Sunday listening to vinyl records with my dad after church. It was a very special memory of mine because I was really close to my dad. The type of music we listened to was classic Country and Western. We would listen to artists such as Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams Sr., George Jones, Tammy Wynette and Willie Nelson. In the textbook it states,” Country and western music has carried on the narrative tradition of folk music, adding its own unique tales to the repertoire.” (Janaro & Altshuler 2012, page 173) I can remember listening to Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn singing the song, Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man. These songs I listened to with my dad made me happy and I was glad that I could share this time with my dad. My adolescence was an interesting time because I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. I grew up listening to soft rock, disco, rock n roll, hair metal and country music. I listened to many artists such as, Air Supply, KC and the Sunshine Band, Duran Duran and George Strait. I would change the kind of music I listened to depending on my moods. But it you were to listen to the cassette tapes I made from songs off the radio, there would be a variety of music on them. The text defines rock as,” a fusion of rhythm and blues, gospel, country and western and rap styles.” (Janaro & Altshuler 2012, page 181). I did a little bit of rebelling and a little bit of fitting in when it came to what type of music I was listening to. I wasn’t as big a rebel as my friends but my parents told me I was rebelling when I would listen to some music such as hair metal and bands such as Motley Crue, Warrant, Bon Jovi and Ratt. I just liked the beat of the music because it was easy to dance to. The music I listen to when I am stressed out is different than the music I listen to when I just want to chill out and listen to music. When I am stressed out I like to listen to classic 80’s music, such as Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, Warrant, Queen and Scorpions. I listen to that music because it takes me back to a time when I wasn’t as stressed out. It takes me back to a good time in my life when I was growing up and learning my place in the world. When I want to just chill out and wind down I listen to soft rock or something mellow. The artist I mainly listen to is Josh Groban, because he has in my opinion the voice of an angel. No matter what language he sings in it helps me relax and wind down so I am ready to go to sleep. I know it sounds weird but it works for me. The music I associate with happiness is anything I usually listen to. I say this because any music I listen to makes me happy. But if I have to narrow it down to one or two types it would be country and western and rock n roll. It makes me happy to listen to Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, Poison/ Bret Michaels, and Bon Jovi. These artists and bands are great because they know how to communicate happiness through their music. I enjoy listening to different types of music with my children and they enjoy it too, well at least I hope so. They listen to some of the same types of music I listen to and some different types. I tell them that if it makes them happy to listen to that music it is okay as long as it doesn’t demean woman in any way. So there it is my life in music. I have shown you just how music has affected my life and just what types of music I like to listen to and why. I have a lot of great memories that are associated to music. I enjoy many different types of music and I know that is weird but I don’t care that is who I am and I am not going to change that now. I try to tell my children to enjoy different types of music and that will help them make some great memories of their own. I have made many new great memories listening to music with my children. They like to laugh at me when I sing the songs or dance to them.

Music in My Life

...experience, music can be a hard concept, especially singing. At the age of nine, I stepped into the field of music. Little did I know that it would be life-changing. My story begins in 2001. My mother asked if I would be interested in singing. I hadn’t given it much thought. She suggested I join the Phoenix Boys Choir. She explained what it was and how successful it had always been. I decided to try out. When I arrived, I met the conductor in charge of the younger boys. She had me sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” A few moments later the conductor announced that I had passed my audition and would soon be a member of the training choir. I was so thrilled I couldn’t say a word. This would turn out to be one of the most memorable moments of my life. I was going to be a member of the internationally known Phoenix Boys Choir! I moved up through the levels of the choir quickly. Every boy longs to be in the most elite group – the Tour Choir. After two years, I made it. At 11 I had learned more about music than I could possibly have imagined. I learned music theory and how to read music. By the end of seventh grade I had been to Spain, Italy, and France. In Rome we performed at Saint Peter’s Basilica. It was a blessing to be able to sing in such a holy setting. We also sang in the Florence Cathedral. We traveled around the United States performing with other choirs. Often we sang for dignitaries. I think God blessed me with this talent because he wanted me to share my voice...

...(hammond b-3 organ), Eric Czar (Bass guitar), and Kenny Kramme (drums, percussions). Joe was raised in New York where his parents owned a guitar shop. He comes from a family of music. Both his father and grandfather played the trumpet. He learned how to play the guitar at the very young age of 4. Some of the artists who inspired him were Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray. I am drawn to this artist for his style of blues and rock. His music makes me feel mellow and calm. Makes me want to be at a bar drinking a beer, smoking a cigarette and listen to him play live. The culture/environmental music that I can identify in this music are the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Joe’s music is mostly guitar and drums. My Overall impression of the album is excellent. I only disliked 2 songs from the entire album. My favorite song from the album was song title “Reconsider baby” and my second was “When she dances”. Both are slower and mellow. The songs are very calming and easy to listen too. My least favorite song was “Faux Martini”. This song was my least favorite because it sounds too much like country and I’m not a country fan. Sounds very honky tonk and that’s not my style at all. One of the musical characteristics I found is his music was texture. His music is very thick and full. It’s a part of western music and that is what Joe sings. I can identify specially the acoustic, bass and electric guitars involved. The flow of the album seemed to go pretty steady. The album made sense...

Why Music Is My Life

...Music is an important part of life. It is a form of expression. It has no boundaries, and it follows no guidelines. Essentially, to me, music is like air. It has no true shape or definition, yet we need it to live. Imagine a world without music. All you’re left with is dust. Music is life itself. As a junior in high school, I’ve given considerable thought to my future. When I was younger, I saw myself as an architect or perhaps just simply an artist. When I grew to be a bit older, I saw myself in robotic science. Then, I was accepted into Milwaukee High School of the Arts. It was perhaps one of the best things to ever happen to me. When I first started, I had very little music instruction. Under the direction of Mrs.Garcia, I quickly was able to expand my knowledge. Less than a few months at the school, I realized that music is my calling. With college approaching at an ever increasing rate, I’ve begun to plan my life in incredible detail. The one thing that remains constant in my planning would have to be music. Music is my life. This summer, I shall begin touring colleges. My first choice would have to be UW-Milwaukee. Both my band director and private lessons teacher went there. They’re both fantastic and I look up to them. Musical education would be an amazing thing to do. I want the opportunity to watch as a child grows under my instruction. I want to be able to have someone look up to me as much as I look up to my lessons teacher. I want to inspire a child to take...

Personal Narrative: How Music Changed My Life

...to current day, music has had an impact on my life that is simply difficult to match. A lot of my personality and resilience was created and encouraged by the songs and lyrics that I was exposed to from a very early age. Currently music is used as my escape; as a place that I can express myself and how I’m feeling through the artistry of others. To many people who create the music we listen to, their music and their expression through their lyrics is almost as important as breathing to them. Music feeds the soul and the heart in ways that many people can simply not explain. The infectious nature of music is what has helped maintain its existence around the world for centuries before and many...

Personal Narrative: How Music Changed My Life

...Over my years of playing music I learned and experienced many things that I believe that has helped me become a better performer, as well as when it comes to not only playing but know the theory of music. In my years as a high school student I had a goal of wanting to challenge myself so I can see how far I can push my limits. I would say that the only person who truly helped me become better of what I needed to achieve my goals is my director delph, always making me do things outside of my comfort zone. I serve my time outside of school by performing in football and basketball games as well as going to festivals, school performances and this year i’ve gone to WIBC which is where I get the chance to go to seattle for about 4 days and get to play with the best high school musicians in the Western States performing with famous composers. I as well started to take music theory so I can have a better understanding of reading the music better. I would say my biggest strength would have to be playing the clarinet but what I lack the most is the theory of music, there were parts where I can’t seem to truly understand how music works when it comes to intervals or the tetrachords. If I failed on something I would most likely try to overcome it by studying or asking my teacher for help so I myself can grasp an understanding of it....

...have developed for music has to be high on that list. It was in fourth grade that I was really introduced the wonder that is music. That January, at the age of ten, I suddenly matured in a way that I could not have imagined. From that day on, a part of me began to develop. Now, that passion is one of the cornerstones of who I am as a person. This change can be largely credited to a big hero of mine: my sister, Anniestacia. Her active involvement in band blazed the trail for what would become one of the biggest parts of my life. As a multitude of students do, Stacia joined the sixth grade band at Bay Minette Intermediate School. When I heard about her joining, not much went through my head except the thought that there would not be much quiet around the house anymore. As I went to her concerts that year, I went through the motions of being an audience member, clapping after every song, and even standing up...

Personal Narrative: How Music Affected My Life

...Music, know one really knows how it affects us in life. It affected me since the first time I ever touched a key on a piano, moved a slide on a trombone, strummed a string on a guitar and heard the sound of a drum after a quick hit. Last year in October The University of Memphis held a march with the mighty sound of the south and invited high schoolers to go play and march with them on the field. The morning I had to wake up super early which was kinda different from my normal Saturdays of sleeping in till around noon unless it’s competition season which ended early last year. As we arrived people were already there and getting set up and talking. Then the band director came out and greeted everyone as we stood in a weird circle around him....

I love my violin. I love my music. It all started during seventh grade when I realized that I could major in music at Lincoln Park High School. Once I found this out, I was determined to not only succeed in getting into the program, but to challenge myself by taking up a new instrument: the violin. I’d been taking piano lessons since I was nine, so I asked my instructor, Ann Urhausen to help me prepare. I auditioned with a piece she had picked out for me. On average, I practiced two hours a day in order to make certain that my interpretation was on point,...

...consumed my Sunday afternoons. At times, I got so frustrated that I wanted to just end it. But still, I stayed. I stayed for the shimmering voice that she resonated herself with. I stayed for the memories that we made. I stayed for the hundreds of sunny days we had that shined through the very somber ones. I'm not sure that even I knew what I was getting myself into when we convened for the first time in the fourth grade. Initially, there was excitement—to finally find something that always seemed so interesting to me, albeit unfamiliar. But soon after, my love for music began to waver. Curiosity soon became frustration; I picked up the viola for the first time wanting to play something that I’d be eager to call my mom over to listen to. Instead, I made sure to shut the door every time I practiced, hoping to muffle the unpleasant screech of...

That’s not the case I ventured out into other types of music and always came back. My querencia would have to be music. The genre that I enjoy the most and I have never lost interest in is Rap/Hip-Hop. I mostly listen to underground Rap/Hip-Hop. Most people immediately ask if I listen to the stuff rap that is played on the radio. I always have to explain to them that they are not the same at all.
