On February 17, 2005, the Jazz Ensemble at Tarleton State University had their first concert of the spring semester with special guest trumpeter, Daryl White. The jazz ensembles collectively performed thirteen pieces during the concert. “Fly Me to the Moon”, “Waltz for Debby” and “Ancient Memories” were three stylistically different pieces that allowed the audience to experience the various sounds of jazz music. Jazz music, like all music, tells a story and here are the stories of “Fly Me to the Moon”, “Waltz for Debby” and “Ancient Memories”. “Fly Me to the Moon”, written by Bart Howard and arranged by Sammy Nestico, is an upbeat standard sung most famously by Frank Sinatra. In the instrumental version of this song, a Latin-inspired sounding consonance set the romantic mood at the beginning of this song. A piano and saxophone then alternated the melody of the song as though they were dancing like two lovers flying to the moon. As the passion of the song heated up, the texture changed within the song as the saxophone took the melody and the piano and other instruments within the ensemble were in accompaniment. The rhythm, which was continuously steady seemed to get faster like a heart beat by the climax of the song. It was also at this point that the dynamics of the song were increasingly getting louder until all instruments met at the top with a bang and then changed the

African American Music Review

...Justin Baird Professor Tolson African American Music 1/28/15 Review #1 On Monday night, January 26th I had the pleasure of attending a Jazz Combo that consisted of three different bands. This Jazz Combo was performed by the University Of Louisville School Of Music and was held in Bird Recital Hall. These bands included the Clark Terry Combo directed by Tyrone Wheeler, Terence Blanchard Combo directed by Ansyn Banks, and the Fats Navarro Combo directed by Ansyn Banks as well. One of the bands that I enjoyed the most was the Terence Blanchard Combo which was directed by Ansyn Banks. This group consisted of Jon Driver who played the saxophone, Doug Finke who played the trombone, Hanks Evans who played the piano, Will Kinman who played the bass, and John Walther who played the drums. Most of the performers were young but the older men still kept up with them and made for a great performance. The band itself felt comfortable playing their instruments, but seemed a little timid when it came to actually performing in front of everyone though. They were confident in what they were doing, but just seemed like they were a bit nervous in the beginning. The energy with each other was a little sluggish at the beginning of their performance but picked up midway through the first song and continued to increases as they performed their second piece of the night. They all got into their instrument and you could really feel the passion they had for playing it as well. The Terence Blanchard...

Music Video Review

...Music Video Review The music video of Thriller by Michael Jackson is directed by John Landis and published in 1983. It successfully promotes the song and the artist at that time. The short film is approximately thirteen minutes in length with around 250 shots, in which it uses various shots and editing techniques to present more than one storylines. The images and movements of camera also correspond well with the mysterious but fun tone of the song. In the first scene of the music video, we see a long continuous shot of a moving car in the forest. The first scene uses the sound of the nature to draw the audience in the story. As the car approaches the camera, the video cuts to a medium shot of Michael and a girl. Their car is out of gas. After their brief conversation, the editor directly cuts to their lower bodies walking in the forest. In this scene, we continue to hear the sounds of nature and the steps they take. The camera moves gradually to their upper body. The editor cuts between close-ups of the two characters’ faces during their conversation. After when Michael says he is different, the video directly cuts to the moon. We hear music for the first time in the video to show that something is going to happen. Michael starts to transform to a werewolf. The editor cuts between his transformation and the girl’s reaction. The camera moves closer and closer to the two characters and the editor then cuts between close-ups of Michal’s body parts and the girl’s screaming face...

Classical Music Concert Review

...Erin Jordan Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra September 12, 2011 Berlin Philharmonie The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestral performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 while touring in Europe and was conducted by Manfred Honeck. The program is Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in c-sharp minor with encores by Josef Strauss and Richard Strauss. I obtained the program from http://www.youtube.com. Watching and listening to a concert on a small computer screen with poor sound quality isn’t ideal but the feelings and emotions were still present. Prior to watching the concert I researched the composer Gustav Mahler. One important piece of musicians is their life history. I learned Gustav had a near death experience prior to composing Symphony No. 5. I believe his struggle with life and death was told in his work. Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 begins with a trumpet solo intro and is quickly joined by the bass drums portraying a sense of fear and suspense. The trumpet intro is by far the most memorable feature. The musical theme is a sense of darkness to light, sadness and despair to joyful and hopeful. Many parts also sound as if there is sorrow turned into violence. It is as if Mahler is fighting for something or someone. Quite possibly his own life or even the love of a female. There are frequent changes in tempo and dynamic with crescendo and decrescendo. The cadence of the orchestra allows for more suspense and the need to see what comes next in the story. Many chords...

Dr. Sergio Gonzalez invited magnificent singers from his MUL 1010 class to make this concert unforgettable with his accompaniment in the piano. Every artist was welcomed with a warm applause from every single person. Film Review Essay: Sound of Music

...The Best Musical in the World “Do a deer a female deer, Re a drop of gold sun, Mi a name I call myself, Fa a long long way to run, So a needle pulling thread, La a note to follow So, Ti a drink with jam and bread, and that would bring us back to do, do, do, do.” The Sound of Music aired in the year 1965. It was set in Austria in the 1930’s. The movie is a biography, drama, family, musical, and a romance. There were three main actors in this film. The three were Julie Andrews (Maria), Christopher Plummer (Captain VonTrapp), and Eleanor Parker (The Baroness). The director was Robert Wise. Wise has directed other popular movies like West Side Story and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The film won five Oscars, twelve awards, and had another eleven nominations. The Sound of Music has a four-star movie rating. The Sound of Music does a stupendous job of creating a cute love story mixed with a musical, has a very noticeable character development, is interesting and catchy, but it incorrectly portrays the true story behind the movie. The movie begins with Maria, a nun, living in an Austrian convent. Maria does not fit well into the nun life. She was sent to the VonTrapp’s to be a governess by her Mother Superior. When Maria arrives at the house, she finds the children to be very rude and unwelcoming. She finds the father as very strict and uptight. She then realizes that she needs to help this family come back together. After only a day the children begin to love Maria. Maria loves...

A Critical Review of “Developing Critical Thinking and Assessment in Music Classrooms”

...Pawitra C. A Critical Review of “Developing Critical Thinking and Assessment in music classrooms” As many American students have a difficulty to reach a goal of testing standard makes music teachers are required to add the reading and writing skills in their classrooms. Maria Stefanova has provided some options to solve this problem in the article called “Developing Critical Thinking and Assessment in music classrooms”. It was published in May, 2011 by American String Teacher. In the article, she presents five classroom strategies to fill the gap between music and literacy classes. The first strategy is a prior step of the class which requires teachers to survey the students about their interest and background, while the second one could be done at the end of the class as an “exit ticket”. The next two are tactics which conceal the knowledge behind the performances and inviting a musician as a guest to classroom. The last one is to ask students to record their homework constantly. The author says that “[these strategies are] not only strengthening music instruction, but also to develop active thinking and assessment tools in the music classroom” (Stefanova, 2001). Most of the strategies are agreeable, however, I have a different point of view in some issues. Maria (2011) says that it is important for teachers to know more about their students’ interest and background to help them improve their skills, especially for new students. It is better to use written form of survey...

Review on Bojan-Z Music Concert February 27 2013

...On February 27, I had a chance to attend a jazz concert by French jazz pianist Bojan Z, which was taken place at the Institute for Cultural exchange with France (IDECAF) in Ho Chi Minh City. The concert was an opportunity for Bojan to feature some of his best work selected from the “Soul shelter” and “Transpacifi” albums, namely Natural Ground, Buzz, No 9, Pick It Up and Empty Shell. The performance also featured some new, incomplete works which are still being developed. Many of them were influenced by traditional Balkan music, as Bojan said. The band consisted of Josh Roseman on trombone, Ruth Goller on bass, Sebastian Rochford on drums and Bojan Z himself on the piano. Bojan Z began his concert by banging out a percussion rhythm on the grand piano’s lid and top, which was strange but really interesting. This acted as a intro point for a modern and funky, danceable jazz tune along with bitonal structures and bitonal points. At multiples times, he reached inside the piano and touched out bass notes directly on the strings like a bassist usually does on his own instrument. That was really amusing for the audience. Some of Bojan Z's tune were played through a couple of effects boxes (one of which as a digital delay) and occasionally on a xenophone, an electronic keyboard of his own design. His jazz technique is redoubtable, to be sure, and his solos scorch the air, along with his fingers never waver. For a few tracks, the melodies usually hides inside continuous ranges of improvisation...

The History of the Music Business: Literature Review of Readings

...The History of the Music Business: Literature review of readings The landscape of the music business has been shaped by influential minds in music history. From as early as the 1940s to the 21st century, artists such as Nirvana and managers such as Peter Grant have made major decisions that would shape their careers and subsequently the future of the music business (Goldberg, 2008; Welch, 2003). In this literature review, the events and decisions that helped shaped the future will be examined and explored in the text to understand their impact on the music business. Ahmet was one of the influential people in the early stages of the music industry (Greenfield, 2011). When he met all the guys with independent record companies and decided they were ‘a bunch of third-rate crooks’, he like Rothchild jumped on the opportunity to get into the record business and eventually finding Atlantic records with Herb (Greenfield, 2011: 40; Goodman, 1997). But not all independent record labels were third rate crooks, Morris Levy, started from an independent record company, Roulette and was an important figure in the early stages of the music business (Dannen, 1990). He was described as the octopus of the music industry with his influences and connections, especially with the mafia who were heavily influential in many parts of the States. This would set the precedent for the future rap industry in which the themes of alcohol, stripper, violence and drugs are common and run by gangsters....

Music Review

...Aaron Karo 12/8/08 Professor Phipps Concert Review The Korean Percussion Ensemble was held in the Annette Recital Hall at the Center for the Arts. The director of the band was Soojin Kim Ritterling. The performance was called "Samulnori", which means "four things playing." These four things refer to the four instruments used in Nongak. The first song played by the Korean band was called "Tego Sori" by Soojin Kim Ritterling. The song started out with a bang as the bass drums were played. Then, other drums joined the bass drums. This combination of the two different drums playing together had a really good beat and rhythm. The beat started picking up pace after the two drums played together. The song sounded good as it changed it's speed, rhythm, and tempo quite often. The song ended just as it began, with very loud drums and a very quick pace. The next song was called "Yongnam Nongak." The song started off with gongs playing, and the rest of the band joined in, in sync with the gongs. They were all playing in unison and the song sounded good, as it had good range from higher pitched drums to lower pitched drums. As the song continued to play, I noticed that the bigger gong that was playing, controlled the beat and rhythm of the song. The song sounded as it if were a ceremonial song they played in their country. Then, the drums started picking up the pace of the song along with the gongs. The drums picked up the pace while hitting both sides...

On such an immediate deadline for filing a feature-length album review, it’s nearly impossible for a young critic to stunt. At Jezebel, Clover Hope just wrote the truth. With bits of personal and political context interspersed, Hope framed her review as a first-take impression of the “overwhelming blackness” of an album about funk and self-destruction. “This initial feeling is suffocating,” Hope wrote. “It’s the essence of Dis Tew Much.” I think most fans and critics would agree that Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is, indeed, overwhelming. I reviewed To Pimp a Butterfly in about 72 hours. In that narrow band of time, I "got" the album's messages and themes but couldn’t grasp the motivations for the album’s sound. Why, in. Then you will give the background of the problem and discuss it. This must all lead to two Courses of Action (COAs; solutions) that are tied to your title and problem. You need a “product” such as a process, a plan, a strategy, a program – something that can be recommended and implemented. Problem Statement (if not finalized post a draft – focus on the "pain.") The problem is that after initial training employees are not being reviewed for current performance. Suggest that after this initial statement you add something more about the problem.
