My CTA passage is the scene towards the beginning of the book (Ch 5 pgs. 34-36) where Pip, Joe, and some soldiers find the two convicts (Magwitch and Compeyson) fighting at the bottom of a ditch. Compeyson claims that Magwitch tried to kill him, while Magwitch is just happy about being the one to capture him in the first place. Prior to this passage, Pip came across Magwitch in the graveyard and was told he had to bring him a file and some food or he’d be dead. So of course, Pip stole some food from his sister’s kitchen and brought the convict what he wanted, only to have the group of soldiers show up at his door during Christmas Dinner. Pip and Joe then joined them and went “convict-hunting”. In this passage, Dickens conveys through his use of repetitive speech, that even good people can do things for the wrong reasons, and shows that no one ever really changes who they are; they act the way they were raised because they just simply don’t know another way to be. …show more content…
When you dig farther into the book, you realize that he is doing it to get revenge for what Compeyson did to him in the past (explained in Ch 42). Magwitch’s first words when they are found by the soldiers are, “I took him! I give him up to you!” This quote is repeated many times in the passage because Dickens wants us to understand that Magwitch is extremely proud of himself for having caught Compeyson in the act of fleeing and to have “dragged him this far on his way back”. The feeling of this sweet act of revenge is so wonderful to Magwitch that at this point, although he knows his jail time won’t be any less for turning Compeyson in, he is happy with himself nonetheless because when the sergeant is talking to him, he says, “I took him. He knows it. That’s enough for
