My Car Accident
Like any other Saturday, I was hanging out with my best friend, Lindsey. We had just left the Project Graduation car show, and were headed out Buckeye Road trying to get her home on time. We were playing loud music, laughing, swaying and talking about our boyfriend issues like normal. I hated to see the night end, so we sat in my car in her driveway hashing out our plans for next weekend. We hugged and she made me promise I would buckle up and be safe. Of course, I agreed to both, I put the car in reverse and backed out. As I was driving down twisting country roads thinking about our plans for next weekend, the thought of being in a car accident never crossed my mind. And then it happened.
A bright red car came barreling at me head on. I panicked, and jerked my steering wheel. My car wheels dropped off the low shoulder. Suddenly, the car careened out of control, and everything went dark. I couldn’t see, but I could hear the screaming of brakes, smell of burning rubber, feel my body being jolted forward in a lifeless motion. I heard sounds of metal crunching, felt like I was soaring through the sky, and everything ended in a sudden hard stop and complete silence.
The next thing I remember is someone cradling me, and talking to me and the sounds of sirens in the distance. I fade in and out of consciousness, but I can still feel the pain shooting through my body, and tears of fear flowing down my cheeks. I woke up with something obscuring my vision and hindering my breathing. I couldn’t remember where I was or how I had gotten there. It was extremely quiet. Until it wasn’t anymore.
The silence was shattered. All around me could hear the screeches and squeals of ungreased metal being shifted around. I heard a door open and close, rushing footsteps coming towards me, and panicked talk about having to call for the medevac for transport. The sound of the propellers were deafening and the wind coming from them sent shivers throughout my body. I heard a soft unfamiliar voice say ready for takeoff. I opened my eyes to see and that’s when the dismay became reality. I was lying in a room with tubes and wires attaching me to all these different machines, which sounded a repetitive drip, beep, and sputter that rang throughout the room. People dressed in white and blue and green danced around the corners of my eyes. They kept talking calmly to one another, although I could feel the urgency in their movements. I could see one holding what looked like a folder and writing something, while another one was shouting out, “BP 102 over 78, temp 98.5, heart rate and O2 stats are normal, IV needs to be reconnected, push of fluids, blood work, and send portable x-ray in for scan.” That’s when I began crying out for my mother. A nurse grabbed my hand and told me she had sent someone to get her. My mother arrived at my bedside moments later to hold my hand and telling me to stay calm, that I was going to be ok. Now I know she was only by my side a few moments, but those moments felt like an eternity to me. I began to ask her questions about my condition and if I would be able to go home soon. She spoke with a calming voice, telling me that my left jaw was dislocated and broken in two places and would require surgery. She said the PCL in my right knee was torn, and she was still waiting for the doctor to deliver the results from my x-rays to confirm if my back and/or neck had been broken, too. I could hear the fear in her voice even though she talked very calmly. I knew she was breaking on the inside, but couldn’t let it reflect on the outside to me. My mother asked, “Do you feel up to having a few visitors come in and visit with you?” I replied, “That would be great.” She open the door and stepped just on the other side of it I heard her speak, but the door muffled her words. I started to ask who she was speaking with, but the door flew open and in stepped my father, sisters, brother, and best friend Lindsey. At that moment, their smiling faces helped weaken all the fears I had just recently felt. The small talk of the accident and injuries must have exhausted me, because I don’t remember them leaving the room. But, when I woke from what seemed like a lengthy nap they were gone. My mother was slumped over in a chair with her head rested on the side rail of the bed, and her hand interlocked in mine. My movements awoke her from this resting state. The doctor finally entered the room to speak with my mother and myself. He was a tall slender man with shimmers of gray hair peeking out through the black. He spoke with a deep, but soft tone. He began with, “do you know the reason you’re here today?” I answered shakily with what I remembered of the accident. He told me and my mother that I was an extremely lucky girl to still be living after the accident I was just in. He continued on with the results of my x-rays that my mother had been patiently waiting for; the x-rays showed no breaks in either the back or neck. However, I did have quite a bit of internal bruising and I would be extremely sore for some time. I saw the panic leave my mother’s eyes as he spoke those last few words. He proceeded to inform us that he felt no need to keep me for overnight observation, and I would be discharged once he made the proper notes in my chart and placed his follow up orders. My mother and I thanked him and he exited the room. I’m not sure who was more excited to hear I was going to be released - - me or my mother. Finally, the nurse came back in the room with discharge orders. She explained that the doctor had scheduled my surgical consults with an orthopedic specialist and ear, nose, and throat specialist. I was to only eat soft foods like jello, pudding, etc. until I had that specialist. He gave me prescriptions for pain medication, infection, and inflammation. I then realized that going home was just the start to a long road of other appointments, surgeries, and recovery for me. And that it was. I had to have the PCL in my right knee replaced, which consisted of six weeks on crutches followed by six weeks of physical therapy. I also had a surgery to set my jaw back into the socket. My mouth had to be wired shut for seven weeks, and when the wires were removed, I couldn’t open my mouth correctly without physical therapy. Overall, I am very thankful that I had the support of my mother, friends, and family to get me through all the struggles I endured through my journey to recovery. I know that I had I someone or something watching over me that night and I thank them, too.

I was going to my friend’s house with my brand new car when I had an accident and my car went upside down. I didn’t know what happened to me or even what I did before I had this accident, and the thing that made it worse that I was going to my friend’s house to study with him for my final exam which was physics and it was two days after the accident. This accident changed my whole life and my whole understanding of driving a car, after this accident I started to put my seatbelt on when I drive and I started to drive more safely. The accident was three years ago in Saudi Arabia before my final exam, I was 17 years old at my 11th grade, at that time I liked to drive a lot because I recently took my driver license and I was very happy with it. I remember that when I would get bored from studying I would go to the grocery store that is a few meters away of our house with my car and after I get a coke from there I go around my neighborhood just because I want to drive and also because I am driving my brand new car. That car was Toyota, I remember that I suffered a lot to get this car; my father said always that I can’t get an expensive car because it’s my first car and the first car always should be a cheap car. He at first wanted me to take Yaris because...

...threatening event occurs. My lesson came full circle June 18, 2004 at 7:00 pm. My family and I were leaving a family camping trip speeding down a two lane highway approaching a car at a standstill. Instead of running into the back of the car, my uncle swerved to the left driving on the wrong side of the road hitting a pothole which made him lose control of the car. The car flipped and slide into a dirt ditch heading toward a tree. My uncle was in the front seat where he was able to climb out of the car as I lay unconscious. All I remember is waking up with dirt in my mouth, the car sitting on my neck and people around me screaming in my ear. When the police arrived, I was unable to answer any of their questions because it took a little while for me to realize where I was. Luckily, the accident happen kind of close to home and someone was able to reach my family to let them know I was in a car accident. The hardest thing to accept about the accident is the fear of my family loosing me. I didn’t realize how hard that phone call would have been if that night ended differently. I walked away from the accident with ten stitches in my leg and three in my ear. The police officer didn’t write my uncle a ticket even though he was speeding on a two lane highway in the evening. He said my lesson was walking away because he has never seen someone walk away from an accident like that. It took a year before I was allowed to go back to bishop with my uncles. After having...

Decision Under Certainty

...Decision: To purchase or not purchase rental car insurance In December of 2011, I will be traveling to Salem, Oregon to celebrate Christmas with my family. I have decided to stay for Christmas in Salem, Oregon for a week. The total trip is exactly a 1000 mile down the Interstate 5 highway each way from Oceanside, California to Salem, Oregon, and vice versa with a total of 2000 miles round trip. However, the expenses identified with air travel versus driving, I made my final decision to drive to Salem, Oregon, in a rental vehicle and not my car. Enterprise Rental is the one company that I choose that has a good rental plan at $9.99 a day for a weekend rate of three days. Because I am an excellent client with the company. Enterprise Rental has extended the weekend rate of three days to four days as an award of my loyalty as a client to the company for many years. Any extra days after the four days, the company will charge the $15.99 per day of the standard rate. This eliminates the taxes and insurance included with the daily rate. Taxes are naturally $3.00 dollars per day and will eliminate for this purpose of my decision. However, the insurance has no deductible per occurrence at $12.99 per day, which is included in this decision (Mankiw, G., 2003). My privately owned vehicle has an insurance policy that covers both comprehensive and collision claims and brings in a $500.00 deductible per occurrence. To make a final decision in purchasing the rental companies insurance...

Decision of Uncertainty

...Decision: Should I purchase Car Insurance on a Rental Car For every trip I take, I normally rent a car and have always purchased the rental car insurance coverage rental cars offer. Hertz provides economical rental plan of $9.99 per day for four day week rate in comparison to other car rental services. Expenses for extension exceeding reservation of car follow the rate of $17.99 per day along with tax charges of $3.00 per day. Insurance rate of accidence of body/collision is $12.99/day extra. Insurance amount will be reduced by $500.00 for any cases of accident in the claim. The decision of uncertainly in the present case requires selection between personal and car rental service provided insurance through application of probability concept. Research “Car Accident Statistics, Stats, Auto, Fatal, and Drunk Driving” provides the figure for probabilistic estimation of accidents as the chances of one in 16 cars being the case of collision. Once I got the data for odds of accidents, I focused on accurately interpreting my data to make right decision. I have to find the prediction of advantages of choosing car rental insurance over covering the claim in personal policy in forthcoming section. Interpretation of Data Applying Bayes’ Theorem I chose to use Bayes' theorem as the probability model to interpret my data because it is most applicable to my 2100 mile rental insurance decision. The Bayes' theorem emulates the process of logical inference by determining the degree...

Narration Essay

...after our week of being on vacation. I got in my sister’s car and sat in the passenger seat, like I always do. We weren't nearly close to being home when I realized how important my life was. I saw my life flash before my eyes in a split second, while hearing the screeching of the tires. There were vivid memories that stuck in my mind; home, happiness, and friends. The thought of how I took everything for granted. Suddenly the car jerked and a loud crushing of metal occurred. My chest was burning from the seatbelt, and somehow my forehead felt like it had been punched. This car accident made me realize how important life is and not to take home, happiness, and friends for granted. While listening to the tires yelling; my mind’s first thought was of home, of my family. Snow was falling on my nose and all six of us were in a huge Christmas tree farm. It is a competition each year to see which one of us finds the fattest and biggest Christmas tree to put in the living room. This was the memory that crossed my mind of my family. The memory of how I didn't tell them that I loved them that day, or even the day of the car accident. I had taken my family for granted; I didn't tell them just how much I loved them before the car accident.  I thought about how my family would feel if my sister and I didn’t live through the accident.  Thinking about my family made me realize just how important my life is. Happiness crossed through my mind as my body began to pull forward from the hard break...

...ACCIDENT ESSAYS It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little under the weather, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I had overslept and as a result, was running a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The road was already congested with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well. My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact I was already late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a resolute and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed a tragic accident. it all happened very quickly, as most accidents do. A car full of school children had made a left turning without signaling and as a result a school bus crashed into it. A few cars behind the school bus rammed into the bus as they could not brake in time and soon it became a pile up. The already congested road became jammed with vehicles that came to a crawl. I told my sister that I wanted to help the victims and she nodded silently. She brought the car to a halt not too far from the accident spot. The scene that greeted us was something I would never forget. It left an indelible imprint in my mind to date. The impact of the accident had plunged three school children out of the car. The driver, a lady, lay lifeless on the steering wheel. I rushed to the children who were preschoolers. Two of them were seriously hurt and bleeding profusely from...

When Driving Changed My Life

...Thirty seconds changed my life forever. That day, I was sitting at at a stop sign, the sun was shining, the radio was blasting, and I finally had my license. Everything was perfect. I looked left, looked right, looked left again and turned left, across traffic. Before I realized what was happening, I was hit on the driver's side by a car going well over the speed limit. It was all a blur and it felt like everything was moving in slow motion. I remember sitting in the middle of the intersection as other drivers jumped out of their cars and ran towards me. I had a moment of clarity and realized that my life had just changed, but my next choice would define my character. Remembering what I had been taught about being a good and safe driver, I immediately put on my blinkers, crawled out the passenger door and went to check on the other driver. He seemed alright, but his car definitely was not. The police...

Road Speed Limit

...Road Speed Limits Professor: Kanyo 08/03/2011 Mid-Michigan Community College Abstract Most of nations have their own road speed limits. This is also an argumentative problem in the modern society. A number of people think that it is necessary to use speed limits to protect people because they believe that lower speed limit can decrease fatalities, injuries and property damage. Others believe that we need to change this policy because it cannot correspond with the development of car quality. According to the data from many car manufactures, the technology of vehicles has changed a lot. I think we do not need to maintain the old standard. We should make new policy to accommodate new technology and new society. Lower speed do not means safer and not fast speed means dangers. I am the one who wish government can change this policy because I think that changing the speed limit cannot only save our time but also boost our economy. Road Speed Limits Most of countries have their own speed limit; it is used to regulate the speed of road vehicles. Speed limits may define maximum, minimum or no speed limit and are normally indicated using a traffic sign. Speed limits are commonly set by the legislative bodies of nations or provincial governments and enforced by national or regional police or judicial bodies. The first speed limit legislation was created in the United Kingdom with the Locomotive Acts. Drives are required to control at a safe speed for...

We All Must Take Responsibility

...responsible for the accident." How many times have we heard statements similar to these? A definition of responsible might be accountable, reliable, dependable, or trustworthy. Based on my observations and experiences, I believe many people have a problem translating that into their everyday lives. If something bad happens, it must be someone else's fault, or someone should have to pay. A few months ago, I was involved in my first car accident. I think it's pretty remarkable that this was my first accident, considering that I've been driving for almost thirty years. The accident itself was pretty traumatic. I was at a complete stop behind two cars that were turning left, when a large van traveling at about thirty-five mph rear-ended my car. I was fortunate to escape with only some large bruises and a very sore knee; however, the car didn't fare quite as well. What was more amazing than the accident itself were the actions of the young man who ran into my car. Instead of taking responsibility for his actions, he lied to the police and to his insurance company about the events that took place. His version was that he was driving behind me when I ran into the car in front of me, then bounced back into his van. Perhaps if he'd had more time he might have been able to concoct a more credible story, one that actually made sense. In the end, the police and his insurance company saw through his lies and everything was taken care of. But in the meantime, my car was towed away and I...

A person who attempts to drink and drive can be prevented by friends and family, but a drowsy driver is difficult to be recognized. As a person who once went through this type of experience, I tend to talk to people about the seriousness of this problem. Driving is not as simple as it looks. It requires making hundreds of decisions and being aware of every possible danger. The ability of a person to drive is impaired by fatigue. Under these circumstances, the person behind the wheel is more likely to be part of a car accident. Drivers tend to fall asleep on the road, and cause terrible accidents. Not only do they put the passengers in danger, but also other people in the road. Falling asleep while driving is very common, especially for those whose lifestyle choices cause them to miss hours of sleep....
