...MY Essay Florida, August 10th 1998 What motivates you? For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of science. Where others see the engineering, experimentation, and presentation of science as a chore, I only see excitement. Even as a child I constantly sought it out, first on television with Bill Nye and The Myth busters, then later in person in every museum exhibit I could find. Science in all its forms fascinated me, but science projects in particular were a category all to themselves. To me, science projects were a special joy that only grew with time. In fact, it was this continued fascination for hands-on science that brought me years later to the sauna that is the University of Alabama in mid-June. Participating in the Student Science Training Program and working in their lab made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Just the thought of participating in a project at this level of scientific rigor made me forget that this was supposed to be my summer break and I spent the first day eagerly examining every piece of equipment. Even at first, when the whole research group sat there doing rote calculations and others felt like they were staring down the barrel of defeated purpose, I remained enthusiastic. Time and time again I reminded myself of that famous phrase "great effort leads to great rewards," and sure enough, soon my aspirations began to be met. This shift in attitude also coincided with a shift in location: from the computer desk to the laser lab. It...

...English Literature Before 1790 Essay #21: Assess the role of the female characters in Oroonoko Feminist point of view and psychoanalysis Notes to LCY We change the focus now We talk about how the narrator tells more than stories She portrays 3 things - all paradoxical 1. Her position in the book – the implication of power in society, and her flip to author creating a superior position 2. Her uncertainty over female power – the flip 3. Her subordination (submission) – her paradoxical actions and her will (can also mention what she has seen) Focus on 3 things on how they affect the 3 things it portrays 1. Patriarchy 2. Oppression 3. Stereotyping   When the French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir (1973) wrote “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman” (p. 301), it raised the idea that instead of any biological, psychological, or economic causes, being a women is purely a social construction in a patriarchal society to oppress women. The use of the word “becomes” implies a voluntary submission that under a patriarchal settings, women embrace the stereotypical norms of what constitutes femininity, hence “become” a woman (Butler, 1986). Under such settings in a parochial society, the birth of Oroonoko highlights the paradoxical traits of female though its display of psychological struggles occurring between the main characters. Oroonoko, commonly regarded as the most famous book by the first English female professional writer Aphra Behn in 1680 (already...

...2/11/2016 School name: Seedling IB World SchoolSession: 2015-16 | Piyush Tejwani | TOK Essay | “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.” Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge. | 11 FEB, 2016 IB Theory of Knowledge “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.” Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge. Knowledge is the basis of living in our generation, knowledge can be anything like if we know what type of combination in clothes we should wear, or what type of food we should eat and even if you know how to propose a girl or a boy then that can be known as knowledge too. But where the focus goes on is the place where the knowledge comes from, it can be taken as an important question while pointing at the ways of knowing. Ways of knowing are the origins from which we gain knowledge such as TV, newspaper, radio, books, internet, family, etc. These were some examples of ways of knowing with which we can relate our daily life. But as far as I studied the main points for ways of knowing are: * Emotion * Faith * Imagination * Intuition * Language * Memory * Reason * Sense perception Now we must know what the areas of knowledge in Theory of knowledge are. Actually it is the division of knowledge into different......

My First Essay

...My First Essay My Personal Essay I walked into the first class that I have ever taught and confronted utter chaos. The four students in my Latin class were engaged in a heated spitball battle. They were all following the lead of Andrew, a tall eleven-year-old African-American boy. Andrew turned to me and said, "Why are we learning Latin if no one speaks it? This a waste of time." I broke out in a cold sweat. I thought, "How on Earth am I going to teach this kid?" It was my first day of Summer bridge, a nationwide collaborative of thirty-six public and private high schools. Its goal is to foster a desire to learn in young, underprivileged students, while also exposing college and high-school students to teaching. Since I enjoy tutoring, I decided to apply to the program. I thought to myself, "Teaching can't be that difficult. I can handle it." I have never been more wrong in my life. After what seemed like an eternity, I ended that first class feeling as though I had accomplished nothing. Somehow I needed to catch Andrew's attention. For the next two weeks, I tried everything from indoor chariot races to a Roman toga party, but nothing seemed to work. During the third week, after I had exhausted all of my ideas, I resorted to a game that my Latin teacher had used. A leader yells out commands in Latin and the students act out the commands. When I asked Andrew to be the leader, I found the miracle that I had been seeking. He thought it was great that...

Essay on My Personality

...entire humanity. My life challenges and experience since childhood have given me an opportunity to develop a good understanding of the person I am. I believe that all people deserve just treatment and equal opportunities irrespective of their background. In addition, I value hard work, honest, commitment and kindness which are sometimes so hard to be achieved in the current society. This essay may not be in a position to comprehensively define who I am because as I grow there is the unfolding of my character due to dynamic nature of life. However, it will capture in details the overall perception of my life and the relations that I have with other people in the society.I am the second born in a family of two siblings and my parents. The environment of my upbringing was a typical of strict parents who did not leave anything to chance. My siblings and I were to live strictly by what they said and any deviation could earn us a thorough disciplinary action. I was supposed to be home very early and avoid any collusion with my colleagues at school and the neighborhood. My father always warned me that he should never hear that I ever quarreled with any person. He would advice me settle any disagreements in a consultative and if need be I inform the authorities. On the other hand, my mother taught me the values of being honest and trustworthy. She could tell me that I should never lie to anybody in order to get what I wanted because dishonest never goes unpunished. Although my......

My Personal Essay

... My Parents Here on Earth Sheena Spell ENG 121 June 18, 2015 My essay may come as a little shocking. My parents were never married and matter a fact I don’t even know what it is like to live with the both of them in the same house. My mom and dad had already decided to part ways before I was born. I always hear all the negative stories about separated families, but I have a wonderful story and I love to share it. My family is important to me and I love them dearly. My mom only had me and my brother Peyton, but he lived with his dad in Augusta, Georgia. Peyton was 14 years old when I was born. Mama met and started dating Cadle when I was around 3 years old. They got married about a year later and I was blessed with an amazing stepfather. He always treated me just like his own daughter. He actually referred to me as his daughter. I don’t think I have ever heard him refer to me or my brother as his stepchildren. Having a stepfather has more advantages than most people think, or maybe I just got lucky. I can talk to my stepdad about anything and he always has great advice. They have now been married for 27 years and of course they are grandparents. He has no step grandkids, they are all his grandkids. How blessed is that? My mama is the strongest women I know. She has battled and beat breast cancer. She faces multiple health conditions daily, yet she still fights. She has shown me how to keep my faith and trust in the Lord. I hope one day that I can......

Essay on Origin of My Name

...ASSIGNMENT: Write an essay explaining the origin of your name and how you feel about it. My full name is Saidah Lauren Belo-Osagie. My name is definitely different from the average Joe’s, but it’s special because I know that even though it’s hard to pronounce, people will say, “Hey, you’re the girl with the hard to remember name.” And that’s okay. That’s because I know that my name means something special: Joy. My parents named me Saidah because they believed that I would bring joy and pleasure to the family, especially because right when I was born, a dove came to my window. That was definitely a good sign. The origin of my name comes from the Muslims. I’m not Muslim, and neither is my immediate family. But for some reason, my paternal grandpa was Muslim, for there were many Muslims in Nigeria. They insisted my name be Muslim even though that’s not what my mother had in mind. She wanted to name me Jasmine, a nice, pretty name. Even though I would like the name Jasmine, it was a common name. I need a somewhat peculiar name for a somewhat peculiar girl like me. People usually ask me what I feel about my name because it is so different, but I personally like it. At first I thought it was uncanny and bizarre, and I’d often ask my mom why it wasn’t something that everyone knew. But, of course, my name defines who I am, and I shouldn’t be ashamed of it. Several times, people would ask me what my name was, and when I said it was Saidah, they thought it was a pretty name. That made......

Essay on My Favourite Teacher

... If, by chance, any student tries to play the fool in her class, she is firm and does not allow that to happen. She is a great combination of kindness and strictness. She encourages the students to ask each other and her anything with regard to the subject so that a healthy discussion generates new ideas and increases our curiosity about the subject. She is very popular, but she is not conceited. She is courteous to her colleagues and the principal of the school. I have never seen her frown or lose her temper. She remains calm even when there is a crisis of any kind. She makes me love going to school. I always look forward to my science period. She is an ideal teacher and provides the students with a good role model. I love her the most and hope to be like her one day. You Ma Also Like: How to stop corruption in India ? Essay About "This Is My Livingroom"

...An essay about ”This is My Living Room” How much does it take before a man gets enough, enough of turning all of his surroundings into something bad? The narrator gives us an introduction to his life and he expresses life’s negative aspects through this short story. The theme of the story could be “Every man for himself” or “Every man is his own fortune”. These themes are reflected in the text as the narrator says: “People are as mean one place as they are another and they’re always out to get you”. Subsection “People”. “This is My Living Room” is a short story and it’s written by Tom McAfee in 1966. The story takes place in Pine Springs, Minnesota, in a neighborhood characterized by hostility and unreliability. But it highlights as well a family where old traditions are a part of the everyday life. This is reflected in the text when the narrator expresses his opinion about women and their rights. “Women are easier to handle. About the worst they can do is talk and what does that matter”. Subsection “People”. The narrator introduces himself as a smart man and a man that doesn’t believe in anyone but himself. He’s a man in late forties and between the lines; we can perceive him as a male chauvinist. There are likewise examples which describe him as a racist. “Niggers are better than anybody because you can handle them. They don’t hardly ever give you any trouble.” Subsection “People” His two girls Ellen Jean and Martha Kay are sixteen and fourteen years old. They......

Essay on a Particular Moment in My Life

...I have to finish my rough draft that I had wrote in week two and turn it in to a final essay. In week two I wrote a rough draft about a particular moment that had a special moaning on my life. A special meaning on my life has been becoming a mother. I was young when I had become a mother for the first time, but even thaw I was young I would not chance it for the world. I was eighteen years old when I become a mother to a healthy, smart and beautiful little girl, her name is Hayley Danielle. Once I had my daughter Hayley she had made me realize that becoming a mother at the age of eighteen was not so bad. Eighteen months later I gave birth to a smart, healthy and handsome baby named Austin Wayne. Having two children by the time I was almost twenty years old, made me realize that they need to grow up and have morals and know that respect, education and that family is everything. When I was twenty-four years old I gave birth to another smart, healthy and beautiful little girl named Kaylan Faith. All three of my children are my world. I teach them all three to not be mean to one another, to respect their elders and to pay attention in school. I tell my children that I want them to grow up and have a great education. I have explained to my children and I will always explain to my children that having a great education will help them be able to take care of them self’s and be able to support their own families when they grow up and have a family. All three of my children are......

Analytical Essay - My Son the Fanatic

...Analytical Essay – My Son The Fanatic For many people it can be hard to break out of the social inheritance, which we all have. It takes time, effort and often, a lot of money. This is just one of the many things, that is happening on in the short story “My Son The Fanatic”. My Son The Fanatic is about Ali and his father Parvez. It takes us threw Ali´s life and how his father Parvez, has a big impact on Ali´s life it. It also shows us the ups and downs in the little families’ lives. The main focus in my analysis is going to be the relationship between Ali and his father, and also on how the relationship develops, how the father helps his son. I also want to look at, the impact that Ali has in his father’s life. If he changed him in any way, maybe Parvez is just living his own life, without any influence from his son, Ali. I will also tell a bit about the environment in the short story. The short story My Son The Fanatic is a about a boy Ali, whom goes to college. He is very religious, a Muslim. He is independent and sees Parvez' beloved Britain as a fraudulent cocktail of "a sink of hypocrites, drug takers and prostitutes.” He seems to bear no resemblance to his father and be very resentful towards his way of sees life. His father Parvez is the caring, protective husband, whose dream is Britain itself; to have his son grow up, educating as an accountant, shine at cricket and school and then set off to marry a good girl and commence his own life. He...
